WATCH: Harris Crosses the Stage To Shake Trump’s Hand in Awkward Debate Open
Vice President Kamala Harris crossed the stage to shake former President Donald Trump’s hand before introducing herself to the 45th president as “Kamala Harris” at the beginning of Tuesday’s ABC News presidential debate.
At the beginning of the debate, co-moderator David Muir announced, “Let’s now welcome the candidates to the stage, Vice President Kamala Harris and Donald Trump.”
Both nominees then walked in silence onto the stage, before Harris approached Trump with her hand out and said, “Kamala Harris.”
Trump shook Harris’s hand and replied that it was good to see her, before taking his position at the podium as Harris walked back.
Tuesday’s debate marked the first time Harris has shaken Trump’s hand since the launch of her presidential campaign in July.
President Joe Biden did not shake hands with Trump during their CNN debate in June — a debate which ultimately led to Biden dropping out of the race and endorsing Harris, following heavy criticism over his performance and concern over his ability to serve four more years.
