Prime Minister Rishi Sunak criticised Iran for its “reckless attack” on Israel Saturday night, accusing Tehran of “sowing chaos” and said his government was working with allies to “prevent further escalation.”
The statement came after Iran was reported to have launched a barrage of drones towards Israel in response to an Israeli airstrike on an Iranian consulate building in Syria on April 1, which killed seven Revolutionary guard officers, including a senior commander.
Sunak said: “I condemn in the strongest terms the Iranian regime’s reckless attack against Israel. Iran has once again demonstrated that it is intent on sowing chaos in its own backyard. The UK will continue to stand up for Israel’s security and that of all our regional partners, including Jordan and Iraq. Alongside our allies, we are urgently working to stabilise the situation and prevent further escalation. No-one wants to see more bloodshed.”
The comments were echoed by Foreign Secretary David Cameron:
Israeli military spokesman Daniel Hagari issued a statement saying that the country “is on high alert and is constantly monitoring the operational situation.” It’s reported that the drone swarm is currently moving through Iraq and will take several hours before it reaches Israeli airspace.
Prior to the prime minister’s statement the US National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson shared that “President Biden is being regularly updated on the situation by his national security team and will meet with them this afternoon at the White House. His team is in constant communication with Israeli officials as well as other partners and allies.”
She added: “President Biden has been clear: our support for Israel’s security is ironclad. The United States will stand with the people of Israel and support their defence against these threats from Iran.”
