Florida-LSU College Football Showdown Postponed Due to Hurricane Matthew

shutterstock_9040147Hurricane Matthew has forced the postponement, and possible cancellation, of Saturday’s SEC football showdown between Florida and LSU.

According to SEC commissioner Greg Sankey Florida was not in a position to host the game, as it was scheduled to do. Sankey also noted Florida could not travel to a game, potentially in Baton Rouge.

“The developments of the hurricane in the last 24 hours, the projected magnitude of its impact and the unknown aftermath of this storm have resulted in this decision to seek another date to play the LSU-Florida game,” Sankey said. “We have to be sensitive to the possible imminent disruption to the state of Florida and in particular the Gainesville and surrounding area.”

Florida’s athletic director Jeremy Foley indicated that the decision was not reached lightly.

“I know there will be a lot of opinions about how we came to this conclusion and when we came to the conclusion, but this is the right decision,” Foley said. “I fully support the Southeastern Conference’s decision to postpone the game.”

The contest may not be made up. Florida and LSU do not have a common open date, so other schools may be asked to move their games to accommodate a makeup.

As of now, the other major college football game in the state on Saturday, Miami vs. Florida State, is still scheduled to be played.
