High School Apologizes After Spammer Floods Student E-Mail Accounts with Porn

A high school in Oregon shut down its email service last week after a spammer accessed their email list to send out content that was definitely not appropriate for school.

Tuesday night, 1,800 students of Forest Grove High School saw their school-issued email accounts hit with a barrage of spam messages. While the first few messages consisted of political messages, things took an abrupt turn when they were followed by pornographic images and memberships to adult websites.

The problem snowballed when some students spread the porn further by hitting “reply all,” but the school district froze the accounts and launched an effort to find the perpetrator.

School principal Karen O’Neil sent out a message offering an apology to parents and assurances that the network wasn’t hacked and student data wasn’t compromised.

“We are appalled by the content of these emails and regret that students would receive this type of material in their email in-boxes,” O’Neil wrote. “We are collaborating with law enforcement and Google to identify where the emails originated and will continue to investigate until this issue is resolved.”
