WATCH President Trump’s Call to Gold Star Widow: ‘Their Father Was a Great Hero That I Respected’

In a newly released video, that will surely add a new ripple to the seemingly never-ending ‘He-Said/She-Said’ controversy with Gold Star Families (and Rep. Frederica Wilson,) we can finally hear what a President Donald Trump/Gold Star Family call actually sounds like….not that we ever deserved to or should!

The call on the video was placed on April 12th to Natasha De Alencar, widow of Army Staff Sgt. Mark R. De Alencar, four days after he was killed in Afghanistan during a fire-fight with ISIS fighters. After she waited on hold for 15 or so minutes, President Trump came on the line and spoke with the widow on speaker phone.

Over the course of the roughly four-minute call, Trump can be heard empathetically consoling the Gold Star widow, repeatedly reiterating his “respect” for the fallen Staff Sgt. calling him an ‘amazing husband’ and an ‘amazing solider’. By the end of the call, President Trump invited the widow to visit the White House and meet him if she was ever in Washington DC calling Natasha and her family, “just the kind of family that we want.”

While there is no right way to console the family of a fallen solider—and in any normal administration, the public would never hear one—the call is worth checking out for context in this controversy. At the very least, it does lend credence to Gen. John Kelly‘s claim that President Trump was sincerely trying his best to console the family of Sgt. La David T. Johnson.
