David Plouffe Sounds ‘Screaming Siren’ Warning Dems They Face Another 2010 in Midterms
Former White House advisor and President Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign manager, David Plouffe, issued a warning to his fellow Democrats on Friday. Remarking a Republican candidate’s victory on a special election in Florida this week, Plouffe said that the race’s results should serve as a “screaming siren” to Democrats that they have a “turnout issue” and could face another 2010.
Speaking with Bloomberg’s Al Hunt, Plouffe said that Rep. David Jolly’s (R-FL) victory on Tuesday could serve as an indicator of events to come.
“It doesn’t necessarily have to be a harbinger. We have a turnout issue,” Plouffe told Hunt. “And I think that this is a screaming siren that the same problems that afflicted us in ’10 — and traditionally we’ve had tougher off years than presidential years — that could face us again.”
“I think for, particularly red states, and we’ve got a bunch of red states though like in Louisiana, in Arkansas, we have significant minority population. We’re going to have to work overtime on turnout,” he continued. “It’s not just about data and technology. The candidates themselves are going to have to do a good job.”
