Exclusive: Andrew Breitbart Says ABC ‘Humiliated’ Him, ‘Damaged’ His Brand

exclusive

Under pressure from groups like Media Matters and Color of Change, ABC News first scaled back, and then canceled, Andrew Breitbart‘s planned participation in its Election Day coverage. Rather than admit they were responding to pressure, however, they decided to blame Breitbart, claiming that he had exaggerated his role in their coverage, essentially firing him for promoting their broadcast.

Mediaite spoke with Breitbart Tuesday night, as he returned from Phoenix to vote, and while clearly stung by ABC’s treatment, he is stinging back.

Breitbart said he spoke with ABC Executive Producer Andrew Morse Saturday morning, “after he released the incredible damaging and patronizing statement from ABC, after their PR flack Ford said they would have a Politifact fact-checker there to monitor what I had to say, after ABC’s decision to attack me,” he was “not particularly pleased.”

Breitbart: “You have damaged me, you have damaged my brand, and I’m asking you to walk this lie back. I never exaggerated, I never lied, I never played my role up.”

However, in his first conversation with Morse, Breitbart says he was calm. “Do you understand that you invited me to be a participant in this, and because of pressure from the predictable (George) Soros, Huffington, Talking Points Memo, John Podesta activist left, to shut up other voices that they disagree with, a la Juan Williams, of course you would have to react.”

“But to react by throwing your invitee under the bus, and humiliating him in the process? Do you think that that sends the right message to your audience, and to the people out there who think that I am a credible news source, that I offer a valuable opinion as the primary defender of the Tea Party movement against merciless attacks by this very same mainstream media?”

“You have damaged me, you have damaged my brand, and I’m asking you to walk this lie back. I never exaggerated, I never lied, I never played my role up. The decision to create a ‘digital Elba’ was an attempt to placate the left, which they took as a victory. This is a clear ‘screw you!’ to me, and my readers.”

He offered ABC 24 hours to walk back their statements, or he would publish the emails from ABC that support Breitbart’s version of events. Andrew Morse’s portion of the conversation was off the record, but no walk-back occurred, and Breitbart did publish the exculpatory email.

Breitbart also says that he repeatedly asked ABC what clarification they would have liked him to make, but they never gave him the opportunity to do so. Tuesday afternoon, ABC News released a letter announcing the cancellation of Breitbart’s appearance.

Breitbart recounted the moment he saw the handwriting on the wall. With a bitter edge in his voice, he said “I knew my fate was sealed the moment George Stephanopoulos tweeted, and he’s not a frequenteur of the Twitter realm, ‘Breitbart NOT part of broadcast,’ putting his imprimatur on the situation, essentially saying ‘I ain’t having that guy on the broadcast,’ it was at that point, even though I decided to go to Phoenix, and try to take the high road every step of the way.”

I asked Breitbart what happens next. Is he considering legal action against ABC? “I will be looking into all possible ways to remedy this injustice.”

If it does come to that, Breitbart will have an unexpected helper in making his case against the network. In their zeal to pressure ABC, Media Matters did an extremely thorough job cataloging ABC’s shifting positions, but providing Breitbart with ammunition in the bargain. Their timeline makes clear that Breitbart was clearly intended to be a part of the broadcast, and that he did not exaggerate his role. As Breitbart notes, “Clearly, I was being asked to give analysis – or, was ABC News paying for me to fly to Arizona and to foot my hotel bill so that I could perform avant-garde interpretative dance?”

For the record, you haven’t lived until you’ve seen Andrew’s terpsichorean take on the score from Saving Private Ryan.

Finally, Breitbart congratulated CNN for not bowing to similar pressure. “They tried (to pressure CNN) when I was on CNN, but CNN did not capitulate when I was invited to be on Parker/Spitzer.

Whatever you think of the merits of Media Matters’ complaints against Andrew Breitbart, it is a breathtaking irony that they would do such a thorough job of documenting ABC’s hypocrisy, then congratulate them for using it to protect their journalistic brand. If fairness is to mean anything, it ought to apply to everyone.

ABC got caught with their pants down. This will be fun. They should’ve MANNED UP and just admitted they fired him due to pressure from Soros’ minion. Now, they must pay the price for lying. Bring it, Andrew!

Liberals are the worst totalitarians. They hate dissent and opposing speech. Color of Change was a group associated with Communist and Mao loving Van Jones. Proving that Communist lovers are the true totalitarians and haters of free speech.

    Why not let him speak?

None of this will matter. The MSM will put its collective nose in the air, sniff with disdain, and move on. The fact that their blatant bias is out there for the world to see – and it does – won’t matter. They’ve insulated themselves in a bubble of absolute liberal superiority.

It does amaze me, though, that they lie without shame and with gusto and flat out DO NOT CARE if people know it. I don’t know how these people look at themselves in the mirror.

    Weasels.

I never realized garbage had a brand.

However, I am pleased to see all my rightist friends so committed to honesty and objectivity in the media rushing to defend this notorious liar. Take heart. His brand was suffering before this, ever since his break-up with the great journalist, James O’Keefe.

…because Socialism does not like dissent. Van Jones was an out right COMMUNIST and proud of it. He loves Mao, and you know under Communism the media was tightly controlled and there was no dissent in the media under Communism. Van Jones helped start the group The Color of Change…the same group that threatened ABC to prevent Breibart from speaking that you will see on in Tommy’s story.

Van Jones, an ex-Obama appointee to the whitehouse was one of the founders of the COLOR OF CHANGE group, and he is an avid Communist and MAOIST…Mao who murdered millions and millions of his own people.

The walls are falling. The internet has exposed the LEFT everywhere, but most importantly the hypocrites and liars at the MSM. It’s a matter of time, but the game is up. Nobody trusts a thing they say anymore. Look at the approval ratings for those guys….You could win elections in the states simply by bashing the press ( easily done) these days. Hey George Shufalufagas, you cocktail limo liberal, how do you feel talking about pie recipes today?

  • CosmosDan

They are clearly not getting a Christmas card from Andrew.

I actually think Breitbart has the potential to be an intelligent reasonable commentator, but he has to expect to pay the price for his past sins. Iff he can stay away from blatant dishonesty, be partisan but within decent boundaries,I expect to see more of him in mainstream.

“In 2005 he co-founded Color of Change”

“his name [Van Jones] appearing on a petition for 911Truth.org, and allegations of association with a Marxist group during the 1990s.,”

Not only IS Van Jones, founder of Color of Change, a Marxist (Maoist) but he believes our own Government and the CIA were behind the attacks on 9/11.

So why do they decide that Breitbart should not speak…when they are KOOKS, and follow a murderous anti-American philosophy?

To me, ABC News has to live up to his own journalistic and professional standards and apologize to Breitbart. We’ve known for years that the media was biased, but I think many of us thought the good media org’s were also trying to be fair. Everyone has biases, but everyone can also be fair. Lately, it seems like only CNN of the mainstream at least retains fairness as a key goal.

Tommy, your post is both fair, thorough and interesting.

To me, media matters is a silly and insipid organization. Yet, they have every right to attempt to try to influence media makers. The smart ones like CNN would never let threats affect its decisions. It’s a sad day that ABC News would respond.

Breitbart’s editing of that tape was clumsy. There are so many examples of NAACP racism, such as inviting the racists Rev. Wright and Louis Farrakhan as guest speakers, that virtually any other tape could have spoken for itself, without editing.

No problem at all. It was hard to know that I was joking about Breitbart. But I’m definitely not joking when I say that if I had predicted that Democrats would pick-up seats as a result of Obamacare, and instead they lost a historically large number of seats, I wouldn’t wake up the next morning and start writing a story about somebody else being “humiliated.” I might deal with, address, or at least acknowledge my own humiliation, of epic proportions, before I started enjoying the suffering of others.

Breitbart is a loud mouth, self promoting, and unreliable source for just about everything, if it will get him attention. Read the profile of him in the New Yorker (May 2010) to get a sense of who this man is and what he is about.

I regret that ABC News invited him in the first place and then reneged, although they did so because (characteristically) he publicly misrepresented his upcoming role on Election Night. And now I regret even more that ABC didn’t just ignore him, instead of giving him a platform to air his grievances (‘damaged my brand’ huh?), thereby unleashing, what, alas, is often too true on Mediaite — a host of nasty, name calling, uninformed, foam at the mouth responses.

Isn’t a move like this fairly common during mid-terms? How many times have we had the old “switcheroo” in the House? In fact this clearly helps Obama because now the economy is essentially out of his hands. He would be wise to let the two (or three) parties out there duke it out and focus on world affairs. The balance of power has shifted to Obama because he holds the power to block virtually anything that is objectionable without being responsible for leading the legislative process. And in two years the blame will be shared.

I never realized garbage had a brand.

However, I am pleased to see all my rightist friends so committed to honesty and objectivity in the media rushing to defend this notorious liar. Take heart. His brand was suffering before this, ever since his break-up with the great journalist, James O’Keefe.

I had a similar thought: being known as a professional liar is a desirable brand?

    WOW, Tommy! Just WOW!

I’m very impressed and pleased with your and Mediate’s fairness!

Great article and Best of Luck to you and Brietbart!

Breitbart’s editing of that tape was clumsy. There are so many examples of NAACP racism, such as inviting the racists Rev. Wright and Louis Farrakhan as guest speakers, that virtually any other tape could have spoken for itself, without editing.

Wasn’t the first snippet of the tape of Sherrod all that Brietbart received? NAACP found & played the entire tape!

Didn’t George Soros devalue currency in France and they convicted him?

Rosie O’Donnell, Joy Behar, and Whoopi Goldberg are all actors/comedians. Michael Moore is a documentary flimmaker.

Rachel Maddow, Chris Matthews, Arianna Huffington. All quite svelte.

I switched to ABC in hopes of seeing Breitbart or at least somebody not stained with their own diaper emissions, but then Amanpour heaved into view with her phony accent and I grabbed for the remote—no more surfing that dodissima channel, not with Nixon White House Defector Sawyer trying to show her Bolshie allegiances and Georgie-boy trying to be serious. Amanpour should be sent back to her Paris pied-de-terre for more baguette-tasting and insufferable arrogance training…!

So? Michael Moore, Rosie O’Donnell, Joy Behar, Whoopi Goldberg are Democrats. Tingles is svelte but Beck is a fatty? Seriously? How about Olby and Shultz? Are they svelte too?

Are you kidding? You have no idea how much an Australian Communist collaborator is influencing our media AND elections, do you? Get the facts:

Earth calling Sara, Beck says that Beck is fat; and he should know.

    Seriously.

btw, I have never addressed his weight. It’s moot. All weight should be moot. It’s rather sleazy to even mention it.

    Hint hint.

It’s hard to believe that his “brand” could get any worse. His website is a joke and he is most well known for misinformation.
On a side note, I now see that what I had suspected all along has come to pass. Conservatives have taken over this website at least in the discussion area and it always seemed to me that Mediaite specializes in the “fair and balanced” method of media reporting, which means giving voice to both sides of the issue regardless of how wrong that one side maybe. That’s why I dropped this website off of my rotation.

    WHA-WHA-WHA-WHINE!!

you republiCAN’T tea-bagger asshats need to stop your cry-whining over everything stupid under the sun! i tell you what, you act like tantrum throwing children that need a whuppin’!

Breitbart’s brand is still intact. he was a known LYING POS RACIST, RACE-BAITING *SPIN* MACHINE before the ABC incident & he STILL is afterwards.

quit your wha-wha-wha-whining & get over it cry-babies!

  • let-me-explainify…

    Dear Mr. Breitbart,

We have spent the past several days trying to make clear to you your limited role as a participant in our digital town hall to be streamed on ABCNews.com & Facebook.

The post on your blog last Friday created a widespread impression that you would be analyzing the election on ABC News. We made it as clear as possible as quickly as possible that you had been invited along with numerous others to participate in our digital town hall. Instead of clarifying your role, you posted a blog on Sunday evening in which you continued to claim a bigger role in our coverage. As we are still unable to agree on your role, we feel it best for you not to participate.

    Sincerely,
    Andrew Morse

How can the “brand” of someone who edited Shirley Sherrod’s speech to deliberately twist her words into inflammatory statements and create a scandal for the Administration (and cost Sherrod a job in which she has served so ably) be “damaged” by what ABC, or anyone else does?

If Breitbart WERE to be seized by a momentary paroxysm of honesty, he’d admit that the only damage that could possibly be done would be to the constituency that already subscribes to what politically-biased hacks like him disseminate, irrespective of its content. They just MIGHT think less of him, not for his politics, but his transparent ineptitude in the editing room.
