Kathy Griffin to Howard Stern: I Shouldn’t Have Tried to Replace Joan Rivers

Last week, comedian Kathy Griffin announced on Twitter that she would be leaving the E! show Fashion Police less than two months after taking over for the late Joan Rivers as host. Now, in an interview with Howard Stern that she never should have tried to replace Rivers in the first place.

“In retrospect, right now, do you say, ‘Why the fuck did I take that gig?'” Stern asked Griffin.

“Well, I probably shouldn’t have taken the gig,” Griffin said, noting it had only been six months since Rivers passed away. But after Melissa Rivers, who produces Fashion Police, told her that she was only one who would have gotten her mother’s blessing, “that was kind of the decider.”

But Griffin didn’t feel like hosting Fashion Police was keeping Rivers’ “legacy” alive. “What Joan did was so much bigger than that,” she said.

During the interview, Rivers also discussed her reasons for leaving the show and weighed in on the controversial comments made by co-host Giuliana Rancic about Disney Channel star Zendaya’s dreadlocks after the Oscars.

With Griffin and Kelly Osbourne both exiting the show within the last few weeks, the future of Fashion Police is likely in jeopardy. As one anonymous source told the New York Daily News, “They have off this month, but don’t be surprised if they cancel it quietly in a matter of weeks, when the craziness dies down a little.”
