Love Cougar Town And Hate The Price Is Right? Odds Are You’re A Democrat

Entertainment Weekly released the results of a survey Tuesday that compares the viewing habits of Democrats and Republicans. The study, conducted by Experian-Simmons exclusively for the magazine, revealed some interesting likes and dislikes for the left-and-right leaners.

In the late night broadcast division, for instance, Democrats prefer David Letterman, while Republicans tend to enjoy Jay Leno. Democrats also count The View and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia as favorites, while Republicans enjoy The Bachelor and Mythbusters.

The study also asked respondents to list their least-favorite shows. Democrats are not fans, apparently, of The Price Is Right or Ghost Hunters. Republicans were down on Jersey Shore and The Walking Dead.

Some interesting patterns emerged from the study — Republicans, according to EW’s James Hibberd, “gravitate toward broadcast reality competition shows.” Experian-Simmons senior marketing manager John Fetto also explains that, “literate media-savvy comedies score high among Dems.” A show like Parks and Recreation, for instance, did well among those on the left.

Do you love Glee and want to know if you’re a Republican or Democrat? Looking for that perfect TV show on DVD to buy your favorite Republican for Christmas? The entire list of programs, along with party affiliations, can be found here.

Democrats like The View, Republicans prefer Mythbusters.

    Telling, that.

  • Moderate

I love Mythbusters and can not tolerate The View.

I love both the Price is Right and CougarTown. And I love Dexter, The Good Wife (fantastic show and very balanced—they really could go off the liberal rails basing the story in Chicago, but they really make sure BOTH sides are heard. Kudos!) The Closer, The Mentalist, Criminal Minds, Nurse Jackie and Weeds (although the last few seasons were boring, the first 3 or 4 were hilarious and this last season ended better than it started).  Cougar Town started off with an offensive to-much-mom-sex-in-front-of-teen-son pilot, but thankfully morphed into a hugely funny show about friendship and family–albeit slightly warped and partial to the wine (love that, hehe).  Hate the brain dead shrews on The View, love Dateline NBC/48hours Mystery, 20/20 Mysteries.  After Oprah sounded like an idiot talking about how she can’t sleep on sheets more than 1 or 2 times (excessive washing, water waster the hypocrite) I stopped watching her. Love Dr Phil but haven’t seen him for about 3 yrs as you can’t get him overseas anymore and he has no videos online for free. “Survivor” is still good and think the old series “The Shield” is one of the best. So, as a Constitutional Conservative, half white/latina, female, mother over 40 who currently lives in Europe who doesn’t care for NASCAR, but loves pro tennis and European football (i.e. soccer), how does that classify me?  If it’s got good writing, I’ll give it a chance.  Oh, and I think Fox News is bad, but not as bad as MSNBC. They both oversimplify the news. Fox&Friends is atrocious and watch Morning Joe just to if Mika can “out stupid” herself. It’s entertaining.

Im a Conservative and I love The Walking Dead. It may not trend well with old school Republicans, but im only 30 and politics don’t govern all that I watch. That, and im a independent. I wonder if someone will do a study that throws independents in.

    Hate

Reality based TV. Really hate Jersey Shore!  I mean, Really??? Who watches that crap??

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Eric-Larson/1589499840 Eric Larson

WOW just went oand look at the list. Conservatives have to stop watching so much BAD TV. Don’t get me wrong the Libs have some bad shows on their side also but I don’t think I saw one show on the conservative side that was worth watching.

As for the Hate. Well I like South Park and the already mentioned Dexter and Walking Dead but all the other shows I am not really a fan of so I will stand with my conservative brothers and sisters there.

As for what the left hates. Agree again for the most part except River Monsters. But I like most anything dealing with Wild Life.

    1. Myth busters is an interesting show

    2. People actually like the Jersey Shore?

    3. Dexter? Really? How can you not be at least somewhat intrigued

    4. South Park-can’t even claim bias on this one, as EW pointed out its kinda an equal opportunity offender, people on the right should be guaranteed to laugh half the time

In the findings, “sarcastic” media-savvy comedies and morally murky antiheroes tend to draw Dems. (No Surprise there) While serious work-centered shows (both reality shows and stylized scripted procedurals), along with reality competitions, tend to draw conservatives. That about sums it up!
I found it was interesting that both both Dems and Repubs scored Castle and The Middle high. However I have a hard time putting Cougar Town in a category of “media savvy comedies” – that has got to be one of the dumbest shows on TV, unless constantly having a glass of wine in your hand is considered savvy and cool.  Everyone should check out Hell on Wheels (and no, it is not about racing).

I agree if there is a good show and I’m entertained & is entertaining I will watch some of my favorites are Gossip Girl, 90210, Cougar Town, X-Factor, American Idol, Jersey Shore, The voice etc.

  • Anonymous

Reality based shows are entertaining Jersey Shore which isn’t crap or trash so your claims about Jersey Shore is a lie.

  • Anonymous

Independent libertarian here. I agree with your choices too. The Shield was grear. It’s a shame to see Chikilis in that trashy ABC superhuman show. I however do not like The Office. I like 30 Rock, Scrubs and some of those you have mentioned, I have never really watched. I really want to get into Dexter. I haven’t watched broadcast shows in awhile, but really really love The Good Wife. Anyone who likes politics should give it a watch. Hate reality shows. Hate The Price Is Right. Love Jeopardy. Love Mythbusters. Hate Ghost Hunters. One of the very few reality shows I like is IRT = Ice Road truckers.

  • Anonymous

My favorite TV show Gossip Girl, American Idol, Jersey Shore it isn’t trash or crap and those that it is are liars I’m right your wrong, Cougar Town, X-Factor etc.

Manfred Truth:Truth Manfred is probably the best show on television right now. Also love Cheddar Horizons, Item Quest, Goblin For Sale and My No Parents.

    Things I noticed right off:

The Left likes fantasy, comedy, and cartoons. The Right likes reality, and “factual” dramas, like crime dramas.

Also, notice that all of the shows that the Right likes are pretty much devoid of Leftist dogma… in fact they’re pretty generic. The shows the Left likes are awash in propoganda. From stupid comments about the Right on Glee, to the Daily Show – which, inexplicably, many on the Left use as a source of news.

  • http://www.facebook.com/andrew.sappington Andrew Sappington

I watch the Jersey Shore sometimes.  It can be a funny show, but it definitely is trash t.v.

  • http://www.facebook.com/andrew.sappington Andrew Sappington

I am surprised you didn’t mention that Republicans like Wheel of Fortune, Larry the Cable guy, and Dancing with the stars.  Actually since you are a partisan hack, I am not surprised. Face it, Republicans like trash television while Democrats prefer more intelligent shows.  Considering the idiotic set of candidates Republicans continue to support, this is not surprising.

  • http://www.facebook.com/andrew.sappington Andrew Sappington

You do know that those “factual” dramas are all made up, don’t you.  Republicans like trash television like Wheel of Fortune, Larry the Cable Guy, DWTS. Swamp Loggers, and The Biggest Loser.  They also like made up crime dramas, like the Mentalist, and NCSI.  Shows that treat the justice system as being always fair and always right.  The bad guy is bad, the good guy is good.  While Dems like funny and intelligent programs that often challenge the viewer, like The Daily Show, The Colbert Show, Parks and Rec, and 30 Rock.  Notice how Republicans don’t like comedies but do like reality shows.  Just look at the list of shows Republicans don’t like.  Most of those shows are actually funny.  Republicans, for the most part, don’t have a sense of humor.

  • http://www.facebook.com/andrew.sappington Andrew Sappington

Jersey Shore is trash.  This isn’t a lie, it’s an opinion shared by many on both sides of the political isle.

  • Anonymous

As a Conservative/Republican leaning toward Independent, I can tell you truthfully, I don’t watch any prime time television…OK, the exception is George Lopez reruns, and then we watch a movie. Or I read, or something else.

Those shows are all-on both sides-mind numbing.

I did used to be a huge Star Trek fan, especially the Next Generation.

  • Anonymous

Now thats just mean! Republicans don’t have a sense of humor? Not true. I’m very funny, and I’m really serious, and the only show I have seen (and that was a few years back, is Wh. of Fort. I used to watch Survivor-that has gone by the wayside tho, because we cut out the cable/satellite for 3 years…Couldn’t afford it. And now, I’m no longer beholden to a specific program or night.

    Life is Good!

I always thought it was the lack of thought that pushed people to shallow television shows-the mindlessness of it all…I’m thinking fondly of the people that I know who are Liberals/Democrats.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_45S32GWGDRUJIL6E2U4HOZW4BM Bob

Does anyone even watch The Price is Right after Bob Barker retired?

  • LJB57

They’ve got no brains but think they do…who are they?
Why they’re democruds plain and simple.

  • Anonymous

Yes, I know all those “factual” dramas are made up, But surely you recognize the difference between a crime drama which is based on actual events/methods/crimes/science and something like 30 Rock, which is totally fictional? Face it, no matter how you slice it, the Right has more invested in REALITY. The Left, fantasy.

I completely disagree with your conclusion that rightwingers aren’t funny. Have you seen Red Eye? The only difference I have seen between Right and Left humor wise, is that the Left appreciates un-PC humor that they would never tolerate in their normal lives, and the Right prefers sarcastic, dry – more British – humor in their daily lives.

And please… the Daily Show doesn’t challenge you. The Daily Show – along with most of your liberal shows – REINFORCES your Leftism. There’s no challenge there. The Left avoids challenge at all costs. They don’t listen to or watch rightwing media, and have spent most of the last 50 years trying to censor the Right (ie fairness doctrine, anti-FOX bias, etc.) The very idea that the Left is CHALLENGED in any way in their viewing habits is simply ridiculous. You’re right, you lefties are funny!

  • Anonymous

Sunny in Philly is one of the funniest, best-written, most insane shows… it’s possibly my favorite of all time. And two things I love about it, is it’s very un-PC, and they try very hard to be politically neutral. Even when they do a show about politics, (as in, “The Gang Runs For Office”), it manages to have very little politics at all in it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/andrew.sappington Andrew Sappington

The Daily Show is very critical of Democrats including President Obama.  Turn on Fox News and you get very little criticism of right wingers, unless they are moderates.   I have seen Red Eye, and it is not funny.  I’m sorry.  Rightwingers only know how to make fun of people in a silly or juvinile type of way.

  • Anonymous

Oh, and by the way… 3am on FOX is the show Red Eye. It’s way funnier than the Daily Show on any given day, plus its LESS political. I stopped watching the Daily Show almost two years ago because I couldn’t take the constant propaganda, and I’ve never looked back. You libs out there that believe the idiotic position that the Right somehow has no sense of humor, need to see that show.

  • Anonymous

They’re not afraid of competition… winners and losers don’t bother them. But it bothers Leftists; yeah it does.

  • Anonymous

This is what’s funny! “Reality” and “factual dramas” are scripted! Yes…they are not “real.” Thanks for showing your stupidity. Also, TDS is a fictional news show presenting real news in a satiric form. I know…concepts so difficult for a con to process.

  • Anonymous

It’s true. There’s a reason why rightwingers are not funny.

  • Anonymous

Seriously…? You must be delusional. I still remember an awkward Stewart trying to get his audience to laugh at an Obama joke after the election. The Daily Show is possibly one of the most biased shows on television. Which Democrats do they make fun of? Show me a clip. Even if you find one instance, the show must be 10-to-1 against the Right.

The last time I watched that cr#p, the entire show was spent ridiculing the GOP, and the only time they made fun of Obama, was for him not standing up to the ridiculous GOP. If you think that’s fair and balance, you’re delusional, And the way you on the Left think its a news show… talk about drinking koolaid! You lefties live in a bubble… you need the constant propaganda from your media. Hell, you still can’t tell the difference between Palin and Fey. It’s so pervasive, you don’t even realize it – its the air that you breathe

  • http://24ahead.com/ 24AheadDotCom

I’m extremely thankful that I’ve just heard of (like through billboards) most of the shows on the list. I’m especially ignorant of the Dem shows because they all appear to be cutesy comedies or stupid dramas.

I’m a little surprised Dems don’t like River Monsters, since that show AFAIK does catch and release. I’m slightly less surprised they don’t like BearGrylls. After all, he actually does stuff.

And, I’m not at all surprised Dems don’t like Dirty Jobs. The Dems turned their backs on working Americans decades ago, and I guess Dirty Jobs rubs it in.

  • Anonymous

No, it’s not true. Not only is it a completely illogical, biased, impossible statement… it only reveals what Leftists think: that they along possess all the brains, all the humor, all the compassion…

…when all they really are are petulant little children who can’t separate their partisanship from their entertainment and use every opportunity it presents to slander the Right with.

  • http://www.facebook.com/andrew.sappington Andrew Sappington

Mr Robinson I think you are projecting.  The Daily Show often takes on Democrats and Obama.  Let me know when Fox News takes on Newt and the Republicans.  Liberals may live in bubble, but Conservatives invented the bubble.  Look at Am radio, Fox News, and the many conservative magazines like NewsMax and World Nut Daily.  These media sources are completely one sided.

Really, why do I have to keep addressing this very simple, obvious point… oh yeah, I’m talking to a liberal.

Yes, they’re scripted. But “factual dramas” are based on reality. Is CSI more factual than 30rock? Of course it is, because its based on real crime/real science. Mythbusters is fiction… but its a hell of a lot more factual than Cougar Town. Even when a rightwinger indulges in fiction. it’s based in reality. That’s my point. Really, a four year old could understand it.

Perhaps you should find a four year old to explain it to you.

As for TDS – congratulations on figuring it out that its fictional. Many of your fellow Lefties haven’t. I have two lib friends on the east coast that send me clips all the time; they really do believe its factual. They think that because it’s “based on the news” that there’s somehow facts in there… but what it’s really based on is Leftwing spin about the news. It’s just that you Lefties can’t tell the difference. So when you see that hilarious story about Boehner walking out of the budget negotiations – you’re not aware that it’s all a lie, and merely parroting White House talking points. To you its funny AND informative. That’s how propaganda works.

It’s because you’re Left that you can’t see how subversive it is and how much all of you use it to reinforce your groupthink.

  • Anonymous

Andrew, I appreciate the effort, I do. But the reason you can’t see it, is BECAUSE you’re Left. Of course TDS has SOME anti-Obama humor. It’s a fig leaf. It’s at least 20 to 1. You had to reach back to 2009 to find an example… how many other jokes have happened since?

Go to Hulu, and watch the latest show, I’ve been watching it for 15 minutes so far, and it’s just been one Herman Cain joke, followed by a segment on Gingrich, then an anti-tea party segment. How long do I have to wait until Jon “takes on” a Democrat? 2014?

To which you’ll probably say; well Cain’s running, he’s got a sex scandal, he’s a fair target. And I would say, sure, you’re right… but where was the liberal media with Vera Baker and Obama? That was recent – 2007 – and should’ve been treated the same way. There were just as many “witnesses” and just as many “facts”… but I bet that was the first time you ever heard about her, isn’t it?

And, cmon… Weiner? He’s the exception that proves the rule. How can anyone with the name Weiner have a sex scandal and NOT get attention? Obviously that’s a different category. It would be amazing for the media NOT to go after that.

The interesting thing about your comment about AM radio… is you fail to realize the entire purpose of the Right Wing media. RWM IS balance. AM Radio, FOX news, and magazines. (not sure about the magazines…)

But that’s it. Didn’t you notice that? You have EVERYTHING ELSE. Plus the schools. And Hollywood.

The very existence of the RWM is because our viewpoint was not being heard. Because the Left was OPPRESSING people. And look at how you treat the RWM – you still want them silenced, don’t you? You hate them and you do everything you can to keep everyone away.

Think about growing up conservative, and being surrounded by that. Every rightwinger I know used to be a leftwinger (self -included) until one day you suddenly see through it. You wake up and realize that your’e being lied to; and that if TDS was truly unbaised, they would hit Obama at least as much as Bush.

You just haven’t woken up yet. Sorry.

  • Anonymous

Finished TDS. Not only was it one long slam on the GOP field, he even had a segment defending Barney Frank. Clearly Barney Frank is an easy target (and a democrat)… so where’s the balance you promised? Then he took after Romney to finish it off.

Dude, it is one long DNC infomercial. Why can’t you see that?

I suggest you start writing down what happens in each epiosde, then at the end of the week… I think you will see a clear pattern.

Wake up. It’s a groupthink. Do you want to STAY in the groupthink, or leave it? The choice is yours.

  • http://www.facebook.com/andrew.sappington Andrew Sappington

Mr Robinson you have created a strawman.  I am not completely biased because I am a liberal.  Just like you are not completley biased because you are a conservative.  You can make all the excuses you want, but AM radio is almost exclusively conservative.  If I am driving in my car and want a progressive viewpoint, there are none.  Conservatives like yourself have a problem with projecting.  Every quality you place on liberals, can easily be placed on conservatives.  Conservatives live in a perpetual b.s. machine.  They watch Fox News, they read the Wall St. Journal, they go online to Red State.  Every unbiased news outlet like the NY Times is a liberal commie rag because they don’t spoon feed you your conservative talking points.

  • http://www.facebook.com/andrew.sappington Andrew Sappington

Not only are right wingers not funny, they are extremely sensitive.  Lighten up.  You make it sound like you belong to a cult that can do no wrong.

  • Tan

George Lopez? Dear Lord, the least funny man in the history of tv? The man with one Hispanic joke that was never very clever even at first use? This article is right; there is a deep deep chasm between the two ideologies!

  • Tan

Actually I think intelligent people are aware that Bear got caught NOT ‘doing stuff’ that he claimed to on a regular basis! The man was caught feigning being in remote risky areas when a quick camera pullback wouldve shown a road twenty metres away. Why bother with the fraud?

  • Tan

Anyone who thinks the justice system is ALWAYS fair and ALWAYS right is incredibly simple minded and incurious, when we have huge wealthes of evidence that that isn’t the case. Also it makes you a rather bad person; believing that an innocent person convicted is fair and right is vicious beyond hope of redemption. People that thought Troy Davis deserved death when his guilt was clearly a question mark are evil beyond help.

  • Tan

Wow, you’re so clever and witty! Mum must be proud of her basement dweller today!

  • Tan

I’ve seen it and maybe once per show there’s a genuine laugh, when they aren’t being conservative. But no, it’s not a funny show and comparing it to TDS makes me sad for you. You just reinforced the idea cons have no sense of humour. The problem with conservative humour is that it’s usually based on fantasy, not truth, and the con position on many issues is just NOT funny. For example, Bush used TelePrompTer probably just as much as Obama has, and so probably did Clinton and all the Presidents after its invention. As such, the jokes based on that fall flat because most people are thinking ‘who cares about TelePrompTer?!’ because normal people, liberals and moderates, really don’t care about it and it’s only far right nutters that think it’s relevant, hence think it’s funny.

And like W’s jokes about WMD’s etc, con ‘jokes’ are always going to fall flat until cons develop a sense of humanity. Only severely cruel wing nuts find jokes based on war and genuine war crimes, funny. Hundreds of thousands of people have lost their lives this small century due to conservatism in power. Yet cons insist on making light of it, when it will never be a light subject for a laugh like they seem to think is perfectly fine and dandy.

Sorry. Conservative comedy is an oxymoron. Watch the ‘comedian’ Stephen something from the big sites and YouTube. I’m cringing just thinking about it! He’s truly awful and actually thinks the reason TDS rejected him as a guest was due to his conservatism and not the fact that he simply isn’t at all funny but cringe inducing! (for the record that’s what TDS said to be polite, although they often have conservative guests so we know it was a polite lie).

    Wow.

    You are Soooooo Smart!

I generally watch tv as a by product…meaning, I walk into a room and its already on…My kids get so mad at me, when I tell them that I can manipulate the stupid remote, and basically, I can scroll up and down for the channels, and the volume. God forbid me trying to get the “words” on or figuring out how to watch something we’ve actually recorded. Not my forte’.

So, Mister Serious, Life must really be pleasant in your house hold.

I’m too busy to watch very much tv.

I’m conservative.  It is partly due to the political climate in this country, partly due to being patriotic and partly due to being a history buff. I don’t like mythbusters but I do like Price Is Right, Wheel Of Fortune, Dancing With The Stars, Biggest Loser and American idol. I’m in my late 20s

I watch a lot of old sitcoms when I have the chance as I have Antenna TV and Me TV and WGN America and TV land to get away from politics and news. But mostly been watching Body Of Proof, CSI, NCIS, Revenge and the like. But I also watch Modern Marvels to learn something. Then I watch sports and sports shows along with some shows like Entertainment Tonight occasionally and a few late night stuff.

I must add that for a while half the shows I watched kept getting canceled like Romantically Challenged, Back To You, Lipstick Jungle, Better With You, Heroes and Ghost Whisperer.

I do like however How I Met Your Mother, Two and a Half Men, but before Sheen was fired, The Middle, Big Bang Theory, for Kaley Cuoco, and Up All Night because I followed the entire careers of Christina Applegate and Will Arnett.

I also watched online the first 11 episodes of Switched at Birth because it deals with my city, Marlee Matlin is a consultant on the show, Lea Thompson of back To The future is on it and it was well done.

I come from the 90210 days. I did see the sequel on CW which oddly enough has Lori Loughlin of Full House. I also liked that the main characters came from Kansas, my state. It is too bad  Shannen Doherty and Jennie Garth didn’t last long on the show’s sequel.

I also watch Red Eye and The Five over nights.

  • LJB57

There is only one show on Television worth watching ,and that is “Worlds Greatest Tank Battles”, all the rest is Muck.

That is idiotic. CSI is based on crime solving techniques, yes, but it’s scripted and most of the crime solving techniques are not real. They are fictitious and mostly done for dramatic effect. (Maybe you should watch BONES instead?) There is a reason why CSI is not ranked as the most accurate crime show. So in essence, the show itself is detached from reality just as 30 rock is from an actual network. You do the same disingenuous analysis of the other examples by assigning your own metric of what “reality” is. Get a life.

How is it illogical? Prove me wrong by presenting evidence, such as comedies (tv scripted or movies) with “rightwing humor” that have been successful. You can’t.

In even the realest reality show there’s going to be “poetic license”.

However, I’m having trouble seeing how the African well where he used two poles to climb up and down could have been fake. I’m also having trouble seeing how some of his climbing stunts could have been fake. Crazy maybe, but obviously real.
