NFL Star Suspended a Whopping Two Games for Assaulting Wife

Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice was suspended by the NFL for two games for assaulting his wife, multiple sources reported Thursday. The decision was immediately and widely criticized, especially as another player was recently suspended a year after a drug test revealed pot in his system.

Rice was arrested in at an Atlantic City casino in February for allegedly punching his then-fiancée Janay Palmer. He was originally booked and released on assault charges, though video later emerged of Rice dragging Palmer’s unconscious body out of an elevator. Police said they also had footage of the incident, though it has not been released. The charges were later bumped up to aggravated assault.

Rice and Palmer were married a couple months later, and Rice entered a “diversionary” program for first time offenders that will allow him to avoid trial.
