NYPD Union Head Upset that Off-Duty Cops Can’t Bring Guns to Pope Francis’ Procession
As Pope Francis continues his visit to America, the media has repeatedly commented on his humble accommodation requests, as well as his lack of security concerns due to his non-use of safety measures like the fully-enclosed popemobile.
His Holiness is scheduled to visit New York City soon, and Fusion has reported that the one of the country’s largest police unions is frustrated that off-duty cops are being told not to bring guns with them for his procession.
Newsweek reporter Polly Mosendz found a memo sent out by the police chief, saying that with the tight arrangements and extensive screenings, any member carrying their firearm will be expelled from the event:

Pope Francis has noted his displeasure with guns numerous times in the past, having notably stated that those who manufacture or invest in weapons cannot call themselves Christians. While this arrangement is in character for the Pope’s desires and the protections put in place, Patrick Lynch, president of the Patrolman Benevolence Association, thinks its “foolish,” to keep extra guns away.
“Our officers are fully trained professionals who are on-duty around the clock and would represent additional response resources in the event of an emergency,” Lynch said. “Limiting their ability to intervene is foolish and flies in the face of common sense and public safety. It reduces the city’s ability to protect his Holiness.”
