Maddow On Health Care Bill: GOP Should ‘Reconcile’ Their Hypocrisy

video

It’s very likely that we may have a health care bill in the next two to four weeks. Hard to believe our long national partisan nightmare could be over so quickly! The word you will probably hear most frequently today other than ‘nuclear’ (as in the Dems are opting for the ‘nuclear’ option) is ‘reconciliation.’ ‘Reconciliation rules’, as they are known, “would allow Democrats to pass the legislation with just 51 votes, as opposed to the 60 votes needed to stop a filibuster and proceed to a vote.” It is what Republicans are referring to when they accuse the President of “going nuclear.” Point is, the President no longer cares (though he did offer last night to use some GOP health proposals in a final nod to bipartisanship).

Last night Rachel Maddow highlighted certain hypocrisy on the part of some GOP members in their criticizing Obama’s employing of the ‘reconciliation’ option. Turns out they have done so themselves….on many occasions!

Reconciliation has never been used to pass legislation of this scope and unpopularity, no matter what Ms. Maddow might like to pretend. By the way, the Republicans will soon have 51 votes in the Senate, and the Democrats will regret having established this precedent.

There is plenty of hypocrisy to go around for each party.

I would note Felix W, even in the unlikely event the Republicans get 51 votes, they never propose major legislation. They are a reactive group. Not much to worry about.

Rachel and her pesky facts! IOKIYAR, doesn’t she know that?

Never propose anything major? How bout two wars? And if a piece of legislation can only garner a measly 51 votes, how good can it be?

Besides, it wasn’t that long ago when Health Care legislation was almost “certain” to pass. Here we go again.

Hey, TRRK, I actually agree with you for a change. The smartest things the Republicans could do, after they take over in November, is to get away from these sweeping legislative visions of social engineering that the Democrats impose. Most people would like to see their elected representatives dismantle huge chunks of the federal bureaucracy rather than add more.

There you go again, OS. You just can’t help yourself, can you.

You just had to go and smear our messiah President by quoting his very own words against him. :)

The “nuclear option” is often employed for budgetary reasons, because the Constitution mandates Congress pass an annual budget. This means if there is a voting impasse reconciliation is used to get that mandate passed. It is rarely used to pass major bills, and apart from budget reasons it is not a good idea. Considering the monolithic scope of the HC bill this would be beyond unprecedented — it would send shockwaves.

I know Glynnis has a unique set of rose-colored blinders when it comes to Ms. Maddow, but with all the praise she is heaping on the research of this pundit it has to be noted that Rachael miseed one key piece of data: Maddow seems inflamed by her perception of hypocrisy, yet Barack Obama himself went on a long diatribe on all the injurious effects reconciliation would have caused this nation when Republicans proposed using it a few years ago. What is that if not hypocrisy? I guess he has become agnostic on this subject, as well as raising taxes. Maddow could have included that little nugget considering how far back she looked for evidence.

obama in the past saying the 50+1 approach shouldn’t be used especially for health care…

    hypocrite much?

In 2005 the Democrats fought hard against exactly what they are proposing now. Back then the Democrats and their lackeys in the press called it the “nuclear option”. Today they refer to it as “reconciliation”. (Ahhhh, how sweet!)

Below are a few more “hypocrites” that Ms. Maddow somehow overlooked:

Barack Obama: “[Bush] hasn’t gotten his way and that is now prompting a change in the Senate rules that really, I think, would change the character of the Senate forever….you essentially have… majoritarian absolute power on either side and that is not what the founders intended.”

Hillary Clinton: “So this President has come to the majority here in the Senate and basically said, “Change the rules, do it the way I want it done” …That’s a bridge too far, we can’t go there. You have to restrain yourself Mr. President…the Senate is being asked to turn itself inside out….”

Charles Schumer: “We are on the precipice of a crisis, a constitutional crisis. The checks and balances which have been at the core of this republic are about to be evaporated by the nuclear option. ..The checks and balances which say that if you get 51% of the vote you don’t get your way 100% of the time… It is amazing, it’s almost a temper tantrum.”

Harry Reid: “Mr. President, the right to extend the debate is never more important than when one party controls Congress and the White House. In these cases the filibuster serves as a check.”

Joseph Biden: “And I pray God, when the Democrats take back control, we don’t make the kind of naked power grab you are doing.”

I think my favorite liar is Chuck Schumer. Every time he lies, which is always, he sounds so sincere!

    I’m ashamed of you guys.

How can you callously and wrongheadedly use the Dems very own words against them when you have to know the situation is TOTALLY different.

Rachel knows it and her only mistake is that she believed in the good will of all you really devious Repubs.

Back then the power hungry war mongering tax cutting for the rich only had the power and the good hearted Dems who only want what is best for us were in the minority.

You see the difference, don’t you. In their zeal to do what is best for us in spite of our refusal to believe it is best for us they MUST seize control by any means necessary.

OK, who’s going to be the first one to man up.

I live with a very serious illness. My doctors here in the US are the best in the field, but I won’t be able to afford treatment here much longer. While everyone else is arguing politics, I’m simply struggling to survive – and weighing my “escape hatch” options. Panama, Ecuador, Belize, Eastern Europe. Right now I’m deciding between paying for my next MRI here, or a plane ticket.
