Rick Santorum Promises To ‘Pack Up And Go Home’ If He Is ‘Dead Last’ In Iowa
Rick Santorum has put his chips all down in Iowa. The candidate– a long-shot for the Republican nomination but a considerable contender in Iowa– said today that he believes he will do particularly well in the state’s caucuses, but, in the event that he comes in “dead last,” he will exit the presidential race.

“If I finish dead last behind the pack I’m going to pack up and go home,” CNN reported the candidate saying to local radio station WHO. While this may seem like a dire declaration, Santorum was actually working it into an optimistic view for his future– expecting to do so well that, if he did not do so, he would drop out.
Santorum later said in the interview that he felt his campaign would “exceed expectations,” though acknowledging that expectations were pretty low, so it wouldn’t take all that much effort. That said, he did not only want to exceed expectations. “Our intention is to win it,” he concluded, “and we’re doing everything we can to try to finish first and you know, somewhere in that middle of the pack and up we feel very, very good.”
