Rick Santorum: Scrub Racism from America By Starting With Planned Parenthood
During his appearance on The Simon Conway Show, 2016 candidate Rick Santorum was asked to comment on the secretly-recorded video that showed a Planned Parenthood official discussing the sale of aborted fetal organs.
While Planned Parenthood has previously responded that the video was heavily-edited and gave a false portrayal of the organization, Santorum said that he agrees with the growing list of figures calling for an investigation, and then compared the fight to the recent controversy surrounding the Confederate flag.
“If you want to scrub all racism from America, let’s start with Planned Parenthood because it was started by a racist named Margaret Sanger,” Santorum said. The former senator went on to describe Sanger as a eugenist who started Planned Parenthood in order to ‘[cull] out the undesirables, including blacks in America.”
Santorum expressed hope that the “crimes” committed in the video would be brought to justice, but expressed doubt that President Obama‘s Justice Department would do much. Santorum also shared Conway’s bewilderment of Hillary Clinton‘s admiration of Sanger, and hopes that “[she] won’t get away with it.”
According to a collection of papers, Sanger was, in fact, a member of the eugenics movement during her time. Multiple debates have surrounded certain quotes from Sanger’s writings, though Planned Parenthood has insisted in past statements that she was not a racist in terms of designating a particular race as inferior to any other.
