U.N. Officially Makes Leonardo DiCaprio ‘Messenger of Peace’

Leonardo DiCaprio has been named an official United Nations Messenger of Peace, which is a real title that the United Nation bestows upon people they wish they could stick angel wings on, but can’t.

Secretary General Ban Ki-moon announced that he was appointing the actor as his divine Messenger to advocate on behalf of environmental issues, and to bring attention to climate change. Praising his “longstanding commitment to environmental causes,” Ban called DiCaprio a “credible voice in the environmental movement.”

The AP reported that DiCaprio would speak in front of 120 global leaders next week at the UN’s summit for Climate Change, maybe heralded by rays of light and trumpets sounded by cherubim.

DiCaprio joins an esteemed group that includes Elie Wiesel, Stevie Wonder, Michael Douglas, George Clooney, and Jane Goodall — all prominent, devoted humanitarians who just so happen to bear a really dumb-sounding title. (Seriously, “Messenger of Peace” sounds like what a third-rate greeting card company would print on a Christmas card.)

In contrast, Angelina Jolie has been with the United Nations for over twelve years as an advocate for refugee rights and has only achieved the rank of special envoy, which is a fantastic accomplishment, but not as fantastic as being a MESSENGER OF PEACE.
