Where Did I Park My Planes? Three Boeing 747s Abandoned at Malaysia Airport

CNN is reporting this week that three Boeing 747 airliners turned up at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, and no one can seem to figure out exactly how they got there — or who dropped them off.

Although the planes have turned up at the airport at various times over the past year, their exact current owners are not known. Records made available indicate that the jets last belonged to Air Atlanta Icelandic before being sold off seven years ago.

Airport officials, desperate to rid themselves of the cumbersome 747s, took out ads in various Malaysian papers to encourage their owners to come scoop ’em up. The ad reads in part, “If you fail to collect the aircraft within 14 days of the date of this notice, we reserve the right to sell or otherwise dispose of the aircraft.”

The Kuala Lumpur International Airport was the site where Malaysian Airlines 370 flight took off from in March of 2014 before disappearing over the South China Sea.
