Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer Vetoes Presidential ‘Birther’ Bill

video

Gov. Jan Brewer has vetoed a bill passed by the Arizona legislature that would require presidential candidates to present their long-form birth certificates in order to get on the ballet– a maneuver that would likely keep President Barack Obama from the ballot in that state. Calling it “a bridge too far,” the governor noted that she considered the measure too intrusive on a presidential candidate’s background with little payoff.

The bill would have required, in addition to the long-form birth certificate, enough information to determine the citizenship of the child’s parents and signatures of witnesses, nurses, and doctors at the birth. According to local station MyFox Phoenix, Gov. Brewer released the following statement on the bill:

“I never imagined being presented with a bill that could require candidates for President of the greatest and most powerful nation on earth to submit their ‘early baptismal or circumcision certificates’… this is a bridge too far. This measure creates significant new problems while failing to do anything constructive for Arizona.”

It gives me great pleasure to be the one to first call the Governor a RINO.

Let the insane re-hashing of the crazy people’s birther arguments begin.

Rachel just talked about Arizona being a state that does not issue long form birth certificates. So in their wisdom the Arizona Republicans have passed a bill that would not allow anyone from their own state to run for president … unless of course they have their baptismal certificate or their circumcision certificate. Way to go!!!! :)

“The bill would have required, in addition to the long-form birth certificate, enough information to determine the citizenship of the child’s parents and signatures of witnesses, nurses, and doctors at the birth”

This is not true. The bill would only require the long-form birth certificate IF it was available. Only if this was not available, would the alternatives come into play: hospital birth record, OR two witnesses, OR an early census record. It actually contained so many “outs” that the purpose was practically diluted away. If Brewer thought even this many outs was intrusive, why would she back the Immigration enforcement bill that she got into so much trouble over? Something is fishy here.

    Left wing media… geez….

    Good for Brewer…

Now Arizona wont be the racist laughingstock of the nation.

    Oh wait..

Gov Jindal in Louisana promised to sign the same type of bill if it passes in the House Legislature….

When Brewer thinks it’s too extreme, it must be extreme.

I’m sure she’s having a cigarette or 5 to celebrate. But in all seriousness, kudos are in order. She isn’t voluntarily wasting taxpayer money to implement and defend a law that stands 0 chance in court.

you’re kinda of a dumbass….the information requested IS ON A LONG FORM BIRTH CERTIFICATE…Didnt you see trumps last week ???? heres more info straight from the bill ::::::Gould’s bill specifically required a “long form” birth certificate, which includes the date and place of birth, names of the hospital and attending physician and signatures of witnesses. His bill also required candidates to provide sworn statements attesting that both their parents were American citizens.

    No. It isn’t.

It is, apparently, too much to ask that when he does provide the legally recognized document that his state of birth provides to prove said qualification by birth that the crazy people would actually accept it.

The reasons the Governor cites are perfectly valid and reason enough, but the references to “doesn’t help Arizona”, “doing what’s right for Arizona”, “failing to do anything constructive for Arizona” and “a bridge too far” reminded me of the Phoenix Chamber of Commerce’s open letter asking the state to pull back on “going it alone” regarding immigration because it was hurting Arizona’s image and was bad for business.

  • andrewdrinker

She did the right thing. I don’t agree with her on very much at all, but I have to give her kudos for this.

Why would Presidential candidates what to be on the “ballet”?

How, exactly, would that have kept the President off the BALLOT in 2012 — unless you’re saying he would not have gone to the ballet, for some strange reason? You guys need to do your homework. Had the bill become law, the DNC would have presented Arizona’s SOS with Obama’s certified COLB from Hawaii. Under the US Constitution (you Birthers remember that, right?) — namely, the Full Faith and Credit clause — Arizona would have been obligated to accept it.

    Thus endeth the lesson.

These requirements were part of a bill proposed by Sen. Ron Gould, R-Lake Havasu earlier this year which failed to gain any support and died.

How can it be considered “intrusive” to show a birth certificate? Especially when being a citizen is a requirement and the birth certificate is the best proof of that?

And “little Payoff?” With no harm done, it simply gives you the ultimate answer your looking for. How is that not “payoff?”

There is more “intrusivness” bestowed upon me when merely applying for a divers license. She was great on 1070 but this is silly.

Yes, its a shame the politicians don’t spend entire months crafting bills such as this. You know, important legisation that help their constituents and moves the country forward.

Unbelievable. Theres still a sane mind in Arizona.

Vetting presidential candidates is a Federal matter and should be kept there. The problem is, they’re not doing their jobs.

Arizona residents would not be able to pass this test since Arizona does not give out the long form BC. The law would have effectively kept an Arizonian from running for the presidency. Unless they can come up with a Baptismal or Circumcision Certificate. LOL What a bunch of dullards.

Arizona issued long form BC ‘s up until 1997 . Since there are no 14 year old Presidents this wouldn’t be a problem.

This is NOT singularly about -0bama, it IS about every future candidate for the presidency. Have YOU ever seen -0bama’s long form BC? How about his college transcripts, drivers license, selective service registration, and historic tax returns?

No, you’re both just a couple of knee-jerks who think our laws apply only to those with whom you disagree.
