Christine O’Donnell Walks Out On Piers Morgan Interview After Gay Marriage Query

video

Former Senate candidate Christine O’Donnell walked out of an interview with CNN’s Piers Morgan today after the host asked her a question on gay marriage. “My first ever walk-out in 25 years of interviews,” Morgan said on Twitter after the exchange, which airs on Piers Morgan Tonight at 9 p.m. O’Donnell, who is promoting her new book, became uncomfortable when Morgan asked questions about politics. “You’re borderline being a little bit rude,” she tells Piers Morgan. “I think I’m being rather charming and respectful,” says Morgan.

On gay marriage, O’Donnell said she’s not running for office, and therefore would not address the issue. “Why are you being so weird?” Morgan asks. “I’m asking you questions based on your own public statements…it’s hardly rude to ask you that, surely.” She clearly didn’t agree, claiming that she was “being pulled away” from the interview by an off-camera handler.

No wonder CNN ratings are so dismal. Bring Spitzer back!

Piers Morgan is a Liberal schmuck!

Fact: Morgan can’t even tell what’s in the book until he buys one and read it. She didn’t write some pro Gay book that simple!

  • Moosenuts99

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Lemme guess: probably not going to promote the book on The Daily Show the

    GOOD LUCK WITH SALES WITCH!!!

  • Anonymous

My off camera handler is always dragging me to and fro.

  • Cain

This only helps Morgan’s ratings. Not her book sales.

  • azgrandma

Sometimes some things just never change and that would certainly be the case with dear sweet Christine – once a moron always a moron.

O’Donnell is the quittin’ image of Sarah Palin.

You’re just bitter that Christine O’Donnell can’t handle an interview that’s not on Fox News.

He will gain five more viewers. Woot woot!

  • Anonymous

In my opinion, Wimps walk out of interviews.

  • Anonymous

Morgan has been a snitty little twit lately. Being in the closet obviously does not agree with him.

  • Anonymous

She wants to promote ideas that she wants to promote. Don’t ask her questions in an interview that she doesn’t like! She is the schmuck!

She came on to sell books. Got it??

She just sold another 10000 copies. That may have been the strategy, who would have bought the book? Morgan is a rude asshole that wants ratings, she wants publicity, they’re a perfect match.

The Amygdala Strain: Christine O’Donnell as Psychological Pandemic

With the ascendency of a barefaced buffoon to the apex of right-wing
politics some began to suspect that conservatism was not just a political disposition.
And as George W. Bush’s corporate-Jesus coalition evolved into a throng
that could call Sarah Palin, Michele Bachmann and Christine O’Donnell its own, Republicanism completed its transition from political ideology into psychological disorder …

  • Texan

you mean like questions that have nothing to do with her book? Those questions?

  • http://twitter.com/SailRabbits Magister

O’Donnell (paraphrased): I only want to talk about the issues in my book. Yes, I address it in the book, but I only want to talk about the things which I choose to discuss and you’re being rude for asking me other questions about stuff that’s in my book.

  • http://mikechimeriblog.com/ Mike C.

She dodged both Fox News Sunday and The O’Reilly Factor during her campaign.  So, it depends on the FNC venue.  That’s what draws me away from her: she can’t handle tough questions.  I have the same problem with Sarah Palin.  She hasn’t been on The Factor since March.  Bill had the nerve to interrupt her canned speech disguised as answers.
Those aren’t attacks on them; just pet peeves of mine.
Considering there’s a troll that hounds me whenever I comment outside of Johnny Dollar’s Place and Olbermann Watch, I think I know the response I’ll get.

  • Anonymous

Piers Morgan is one of the worst hosts I’ve seen. At least Olbermann avoided members from the opposite side of the aisle.

I think she was wrong too. However, I’ve always thought Piers was bad.

  • Anonymous

Actually he asked the question about umpteen times each time ignoring her declining to talk about the issue.  She’s selling a book, she can talk about, or not talk about anything she wants.  He’s a jerk, same vane as Martin Bashir.

I never cared much for Morgan, but my opinion of him just got a huge boost. He asked a perfectly reasonable question in light of her writings and her extremely right wing fundamentalist perspective. Why the hell should she cop an attitude? All she had to do was say that she didn’t agree with gay marriage and move on. What the f–k is so hard about that?Conservatives like to talk tough, but they sure do act like scared little girls when it serves their purposes.

  • Resist we MUCH!

Piers Morgan has 1/5th the viewers of Sean Hannity.  Piers Morgan is politically to the left of Fidel Castro.

  • Anonymous

Reading the comments here it doesn’t seem to have occurred to a lot of you it’s quite possible that neither person acquitted themselves well in this here exchange.

Though we don’t see what transpired beforehand, from O’Donnell’s frustration we can tell Morgan is obviously conducting an aggressive interview fishing for controversy (and viral mediaite & youtube material) with gotchas.  He needs too, if ratings don’t lie.  So it’s not unexpected for someone in his line or work – he’s looking to make bones and boost his image – nor is it even necessarily out of line, but as some have observed hard questioning isn’t something he cares to apply, by all appearances, equally.

O’Donnell, on the other hand, is experience enough to know lines of questioning like these were bound to come up and have in store a number of pat answers to get past such questions.  Something that lightly touches upon the subject and is – oh, I don’t know – somewhat suggestive of what more is in that book of hers?  Now, if she doesn’t have much of anything to say in her book on gay marriage, her point was fair.  If she does, what we’re watching here is pity porn for her core audience – or another case of her allowing a handler to stomp up and down all over her reputation.

  • http://mikechimeriblog.com/ Mike C.

I assume that meant she should go back for cover to Fox News.  But as I said earlier, it depends on the show.  I’ve only seen her lately on Hannity and On the Record.

There is a serious lack of intelligence between you two. For what? Does she do a good job? Is she dependable? Nah… so why? She’s pretty?

I really can’t figure it out but I’m sure the answer will be some generalizations about how she cares about freedom, entitlements, and taxes.

  • HowardNY

What do ratings have to do with quality and integrity? “American Idol” is a number one show and it’s absolute dreck. Hannity has more viewers, but he’s also a complete tool of the GOP.

Actually, this hurts everyone associated with the wingnutariat, because here’s yet another one of their self-declared stars making an ass of herself on TV. Again.

The fact that Morgan’s show has low ratings is irrelevant — this video has already gone viral. So the whiny, self-absorbed, smarmy, and clueless image of the Tea Party generally gets another boost. And I thought people who frequent media sites and portray themselves as the least bit intelligent understood that a meta-story which took the media by storm wasn’t lent or denied credibility by what media organizations redistributed it but by the person who generated it in the first place.

But by posts that routinely pass for “insight” around here, especially from those of the left, it seems I’m destined to be proved wrong in that, too, again and again.

    Hey Christine-

If you want a commercial for your book, just buy a 30-sec slot of air time and run a commercial.

Going in CNN is an interview…not a commercial.

Like Sharron Angle and Sarah Palin, Christine doesn’t seem to get that the media doesn’t exist to only talk about what she wants them to talk about.

  • Anonymous

“In my opinion, you don’t capitalize the word wimp in your sentence.”

Is this the best level of debate mediaite can muster? I sure hope not. Oh watch out, I forgot to use a semi-colon earlier, I guess that invalidates my argument. lol. The level of debate with the Tea Baggers is a little distressing to say the least… Christine O’Donnell is a great example of this.

I think most Tea Baggers would walk out of the interview if they ever heard anything displeasurable. They aren’t smart enough to handle people disagreeing them to their face, even if there are facts. They are like animals and political debate isn’t a form of solving problems but a form of posturing. Look on these forums to see yourself, in this thread, they defend Christine O’Donnell as if they are defending their own manhood, it’s absolutely bizarre.

These people are intellectual lightweights, and their ideas are not to be taken seriously. They are to be taken seriously as a stupid cult/mob because you have to take threats seriously… but their ideas are like that of children.

The reason Christine left is because she felt “threatened” AKA “not in control”, why did she feel threatened? Her ideas were challenged. That’s pretty damning. It’s like if WCinWI decicided to never come back to this forum because someone disagreed with him.

Now answer me this, if YOU were on CNN, do you think you would have handled yourself better?

Never watch ConstantNauseatingNonsense; never will. Prissy punks like Piers is the reason why.

  • expatpatriot

He didn’t “ignore” anything. He simply wasn’t going to let her get away with not answering the question. And no, she doesn’t just get to use his show as some sort of shopping channel for her book.

Grownups appearing on such a show realize that the host gets to ask pretty much any relevant question, and the guest gets to answer it in the way that best meets his/her objectives. O’Donnell, who is incompetent in so many ways, was not able to do that and so she bailed out of the interview.

This was typical O’Donnell behavior and notable only in how much it magnified her image as an unserious and erratic person who really needs to stay out of the public eye.

  • expatpatriot

Possibly the ghostwriter didn’t tell her what’s actually in there?

Then come back and eat crow! Plus as for bush, the media went after him like a dog with a bone. Had Obama been vetted like all republicans are, he wouldn’t be sitting in the White house today.

What the heck?  The people who used to champion a democratic boycott of FNC (and even Moran and company walking out on an interview) are now dissing Christine?

The pattern is pretty obvious. If she isn’t allowed to trot out her talking points, unchallenged, she can’t handle an interview. She’s not qualified to be a politician nor a thought leader.

It’s far from clear whether she’s qualified to do anything.

Yeah, because you would be wrong in fact. Which organization picks up and runs with a story does reflect on a story’s credibility. Some media outlets are professional and are supposed to vet material that comes in the door, and some aren’t and publish whatever appeals to them for whatever reason. Thinking otherwise is quite naïve.

  • Wake up America

Correction unemployment for 2008 was 5.8. and bush was being browbeaten by the media because they considered that very high. Now that Obama has it a 9.1 where is the media berating him? I guess you don’t see the hypocrisy? And that’s where the problem is. You’re not honest enough to admit that the media is and has given him a major pass. And in fact they sold him to you guys and you guys fell for it hook, line and sinker! However beware because if they can get you to fall for the biggest scam put forth on the united states, they can get you to believe anything. And that’s where the real problem lies. Not Obama, Obama will leave someday but the media will continue munipulating and orchestrating what they want you to believe in.

Usually a guest can say no comment once, twice at the most and the interviewer moves on, but he persisted and deserved to be walked out on.

  • Anonymous

I watched this.  Yes, Mr Morgan is not a great interviewer.  But there were two gems missed.          1..     She said that she came on the program to talk about what she wanted to talk about– yes, most interviews are just PR jobs, in this case so that she could promote her book.  So he kept asking her to talk about things that were in her book.  She was there to sell books, so she should have been happy to talk about her book.    My view– CNN needs to look for someone better (but let’s face it, Larry King was sweet and affable, but not really smart).  AND  Ms O’Donnell may want to play with the adults and sell books with the adults, but she needs to act like an adult to do that  You are on a PR tour.  You need to play along since you are not a Pulitzer-winning author.            2.           He asked her about her abstinence pledge which she was so keen on years before.  But she did not want to address it.  Hmm.      I say get rid of her from the national stage today.  Does anyone really care what she thinks?  And CNN should do a thorough search to replace him.

It was a “I know how you feel about gay marriage and I’m going to fry you” question.
It’s gotten to the point where people are not allowed to feel how they feel about gay marriage without being branded as gay hating, homophobic blah blah.

Well, I don’t agree with gay marriage – I think marriage is a sacred ceremony between a man and a woman, as per the bible.  I love gays, have lots of gay friends who feel exactly like I do, and a couple who don’t and we agree to disagree.  I believe gays should have exactly the same “legal” rights in a civil union as straights.  I just don’t agree with diminishing the sanctity of marriage.  Before you point out all the freaking idiots in the world who diminish it daily with their idiotic behaviour – I’m well aware.  So freaking sue me.

Obama felt the same until it wasn’t “politically correct” to and then he sort of glossed over his ambivalence.

I think my stance is a lot more honest than the President’s who didn’t agree and then he sort of agreed and who the hell knows how he feels at the moment.  Wouldn’t you rather have someone who’s honest, even if you don’t agree with them than someone who says what you want them to say and really isn’t true to his convictions but to the ballot box?

  • Anonymous

No they wouldn’t.  Lesbians are not attracted to straight women.  Ask Darla.

Again, in regards to a media meta-story that received wide distribution (for it was a highly charged allegation in a highly visible contest), taking the internet by storm and finding play in virtually every newspaper and hard news show of record, you write as if you have some special insight that’s applicable – and couldn’t be more wrong.   But it’s cute that you think you’re scoring points and think to get away with calling me naive on this point when in fact you’re dropping your pants.

the guy has morphed into a far far out there loon.  Don’t know what happened but it must have been major.  Maybe his check didn’t arrive on time.

But usually a person’s views morph into conservatism the longer they’re at it and the more they wise up.  Once a loon always a loon, maybe?

Just as with most lefties who sense they’re in an echo chamber, inner selves are coming to the fore.  It’s just more glaringly obvious and entertaining in a schadenfreude kind of way in regards to Nature Freak what with his earlier hypocritical pontifications leveled at the right on the level of our discourse.

Not that conservatives are invulnerable to sounding off in their own echo chamber, but since we’re fewer in number here our arguments are more often on point.  That’s why I much prefer the earlier system of a linear debate.  Though we were outnumbered, we could dominate the conversation with facts and logic.  Now it’s open season for the gutter snipes to sink as low as is their heart’s desire finding safety in numbers.

However, you like what the media is feeding you (ie Obama is brilliant, and we all know how that turned out) Try researching their facts.

“No comment” on exactly what she was peddling — her book?

After the first “no comment” he would have been within his rights to cut her mike and chase her out of the studio.

  • Wake up America

The average unemployment rate for 2008 was 5.8 percent. In 2009 the average annual rate shot up to 9.3, topping out at 10.1 percent in October. In 2010, the unemployment rate has hovered around 9.7 percent, dropping to 9.5 percent in June and July. Obama and others have touted the stimulus as preventing a depression. Republicans, however, characterize it as wasteful, inefficient, and ineffective government spending at a time when the national debt continues to soar.

Above are facts from an article.

  • expatpatriot

Oh Karnak the Magnificent! Could you please provide us with the transcript of the show that would have taken place had O’Donnell answered Morgan’s question? Just so we can see *how* he was going to fry her? Your unearthly knowledge of alternate worlds would be most welcome here.

And I’m sorry to be obvious, but yes, those who would deny equal rights to their fellow citizens on religious grounds are probably going to be called bigots and homophobes. It’s a natural outcome of being a bigot and a homophobe.

Maybe she’s grown tired of paying the consequences of her hatred, but O’Donnell is still a coward and a weakling for not being able to defend the horrible things she’s said over and over. She has justly earned all the contempt that comes her way.

I’m happy for you that “some of your best friends are gay,” but the notion that most of your gay friends agree that they should be denied the right to marry is a tad hard to believe. The fact remains that civil unions as they’re constituted today are inconsistent from jurisdiction to jurisdiction and almost always fall short of the legal benefits of marriage.

I suppose that we could somehow agitate in every jurisdiction in America to drive creation of civil union legislation that would be genuinely equal to marriage, although that might take a hundred years. But I have a better idea: since we’re talking about two consenting adults, why not just extend the rights of marriage to them? Conveniently, all of the law you’d ever need for such relationships is already in place. Voila! Problem solved.

With regard to the sacrament part, I don’t think anyone is particularly bothered about what makes you uncomfortable so long as you don’t try to deny the benefits of marriage to others who legitimately desire it. No church would have to marry anyone they didn’t want to (although they might find their membership dropping when they’re called out as bigots), and individual couples would remain free to seek out whatever ceremonies they feel most appropriately express their commitment to each other.

Same-sex marriage is no threat to different-sex marriage. It just tends to rub bigots and homophobes the wrong way. Too bad. Get over it. History is not on your side.

  • expatpatriot

O’Donnell, Republican candidate for senate, supported by the Republican establishment, funded by the Republican establishment, rubbing shoulders with the Republican establishment . . .  was nevertheless “not a star.”

Well, whatever. I don’t doubt for a moment that sensible people within the Republican Party (those who haven’t been driven out by the zealots) held their nose throughout the campaign and struggled with whether they actually wanted O’Donnell to win, given that they’d then have to put up with her. That would be completely understandable.

But you don’t get to rewrite history. O’Donnell is yours. You get to sweep up her messes until she eventually fades from the scene.

With regard to Barney Frank, I do think he’s reasonably honest. I don’t always agree with him, and he’s made plenty of mistakes, and he’s probably been in Congress too long — but that’s our system, which rewards seniority and drives behaviors that make people hang onto office for dear life. Whether I ‘like” him or not is completely irrelevant, although I do think he’d be pretty cool to talk to at a party.

Don’t these candidates know any better than to pick this clown to produce their campaign video ads. The guy is moron.

  • Gorgegirl

I think Piers Morgan does a fine job of asking the tough questions – quite unlike Larry King in his later years.  If she didn’t want to talk about what was in her book, she should have said so and he could have found another guest.  he was probably under the assumption she was there to promote her book and talk about her screwed up campaign – not to mention how she even pays her rent.

  • Gorgegirl

Yes, but she wanted to promote her fricking book that included all the stuff he was asking her about.  So, if she didn’t want people to buy the damn thing, why was she there?  I think he had to dip pretty low to bring the bitch – i mean witch on in the first place.

  • Anonymous

No he didn’t make up the 5.6 number it’s a lie that Hannity and Limbaugh have been spreading and has been proven to be a lie.

  • Gorgegirl

I don’t think Obama has changed his mind at all.  And, I’m in agreement with you as well.  that doesn’t mean I don’t think same-sex couples shouldn’t be able to have legal unions.  And, if I was promoting a book and was asked the question, particularly on a subject in the book, I wouldn’t be ashamed to answer it no matter who it might affend.   I know the younger generation is more open to same-sex marriage and that is okay.  I love my friends, but I think of marriage as a relationship with bilogical children hopefully as the outcome.  And, I also think that seniors who get married in their golden years should consider civil unions as well.

  • Gorgegirl

I think you calling people ‘bigots’ when they don’t agree with same-sex marriage is offensive.  To be honest, I think it natural to love another human being, but when it comes to marriage and sex, I don’t think it is God’s plan nor can it be called “normal”  to have two people of the same sex, having sex.  that doesn’t make me a bigot.  And it is why gays are not making friends – because they refuse to listen to anyone without the name-calling.

  • Anonymous

She’s just a private person. She just feels that what goes on between her and her coven sisters behind their gingerbread doors is their own business.

  • expatpatriot

This is a reply to Gorgegirl, below.

Let’s be clear: if you demand that your fellow citizens be denied a basic human right because it is against “God’s plan,” then you’re a bigot. Specifically, a religious bigot. If you think it’s any of your business whether people you don’t even know have sex with each other, then you’re an interfering busybody whose opinion can be dismissed out of hand. If you think that you have the corner on “normal,” then you’re an ignorant fool.

I don’t happen to be gay myself (an accident of birth), but I don’t think gay people or those who demand that they be given the same respect any other person deserves are especially interested in making friends with the likes of you. And why should anyone listen at all when you rant about God telling you who is and isn’t “unnatural.”

Just get out of the way. The dustbin of history is to your right.

It’s aggrivating to watch the media spin this story and use it as a means to bury christine o’donnell.  I am not a supporter of her, but am curious as to why they are doing it and how people cannot see the bs piers is spewing about this.  They aren’t showing the part of the interview where he starts pushing jabs with questions such as her thoughts about masturbation.  He was clearly out of line and is clearly trying to cover it up as he acts as if those questions did not happen but that she just got mad because of the gay marriage question.  She stated clearly she didn’t want to discuss it and after the line of questioning she had already received, it was clear that the gay question was simply the straw that broke the camels back….pay attention people…these people dont care about accuracy….

  • expatpatriot

    Nonsense.

The woman has set herself up as an expert on how other people ought to order their sexual lives, starting when she was a teenager. Sex is at the center of her public career and — by her own admission — discussed in her book. She may now want to move onto broader policy areas, but she made her bed on sex and now has to lie in it (with or without a partner — her choice).

You don’t seem to accept that a person peddling a book on national TV doesn’t get to vet which questions they will be asked. People less pigheaded than O’Donnell would simply have given a brief nonanswer to Morgan’s questions so as to move the debate toward the pitch for buying her book. But, because she suffers from a hypertrophied sense of entitlement, she refused to answer what she was asked — and demanded to answer questions no one was asking.

Morgan, never seen as the sharpest tool in the shed, nevertheless had the wit (and the right) to press her. And she folded up her flimsy tent and beat a hasty and lie-filled retreat.

She is the total incompetent. And I don’t think Tea Party adherents realize how much credibility she costs them every time she opens her mouth.

  • Hlgooch

Why would a politician want to clearly state their position on anything? Just vote for them and trust them to do what is right….Whats the matter , lady ? Are you ASHAMED of your beliefs ?

If a person is going to get on national TV to promote reading material, regardless of the venue, don’t you think that they should be willing to discuss it’s content? That seems to bring this event back to the old saying “Put-Up-or-Shut-Up”.
