French President Emmanuel Macron described his relationship with President Donald Trump as “very special” in an interview on Fox News Sunday, citing political non-conformism as their commonality.
“I think we have this very special relationship because both of us are probably the maverick of the systems on both sides,” Macron told host Chris Wallace. “I think President Trump’s election was unexpected in your country, and probably my election wasn’t expected in my country, and we are not part of the classical political system.”
Comparing himself to Trump, Macron spoke diplomatically of their interactions, calling their headline-making handshake last year “a very friendly moment” rather than a posturing contest.
Macron also noted the two are on the same page regarding certain international issues such as terrorism, and underscored the value of Trump’s trip to France.
“Second, I think we are very much in line on some very critical issue of this world and especially combat terrorism and fight against ISIS,” he said. “Third, I think we have a very strong personal relation based on the different meetings that we had and especially the visits that your president gave to my country for Bastille Day in 2017.”
