Government Preparing For Zombie Apocalypse? Taxpayers Shell Out For Anti-Zombie Training Camp

ABC News broadcast a revealing report on Thursday about the accelerating pace of the Department of Homeland Security’s wasteful spending binges. ABC obtained footage of a training camp which DHS funded that simulated a zombie apocalypse as part of a counter-terrorism summit attended by law enforcement officials from around the nation. They reported that the training exercise was designed to “add levity” to a meeting devoted to the serious topic of terrorism prevention.

ABC News interviewed Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) about the spending. Coburn cited a number of examples of how DHS is spending taxpayer dollars on frivolous or unnecessary projects – beyond a simulated zombie invasion.

Among those wasteful expenditures include a $30,000 underwater robot for Columbus Ohio, a $69,000 hovercraft for Indianapolis, Indiana and a $240,000 armored personnel carrier to protect Keene, New Hampshire’s annual pumpkin festival.

All of these expenditures sound supremely fun, but the utility of a zombie killing school or the deterrent effect of an APC conspicuously stationed in view of the would-be pumpkin thieves of Keene, are debatable.
