‘I Think I Did a Good Job’: Trump Defends Birther Past, Clinton Pounces
Yes, Donald Trump was confronted about his birther switcheroo during tonight’s big debate, and he really got pressed on it by both Lester Holt and Hillary Clinton.
Trump threw out the few examples of people in Clinton’s orbit privately raising the issue before bragging about how he got President Obama “to give the birth certificate” so he could move on.
Holt pointed out that Obama released it in 2011 and Trump flogged this for five years since (even questioning its authenticity). Trump declared, “I was the one that got him to produce a birth certificate, and I think I did a good job.”
He added, “He should have produced it a long time before.”
And then it was Clinton’s turn to pounce, going after him repeatedly for pushing the “racist birther lie.”
