The announcement that former UN Ambassador John Bolton would be replacing H.R. McMaster as National Security Adviser took everyone by surprise, including Bolton himself.
On Thursday evening, President Trump took to Twitter to announce the latest White House shakeup.
I am pleased to announce that, effective 4/9/18, @AmbJohnBolton will be my new National Security Advisor. I am very thankful for the service of General H.R. McMaster who has done an outstanding job & will always remain my friend. There will be an official contact handover on 4/9.

As a Fox News contributor, Bolton was already scheduled to appear on The Story w/ Martha McCallum. But since the sudden announcement, a normal interview suddenly became an “exclusive.”
“Well, I think I still am a Fox News contributor,” Bolton chuckled. “I haven’t started there yet, so that demonstrates I think this sort of limbo that I’m in because I didn’t really expect an announcement this afternoon, but it’s obviously a great honor. It’s always an honor to serve our country, and I think, particularly, in these times, internationally, it’s a particular honor. So I’m still sort of getting used to it and I’m sure it will take a little more getting used to.”
When asked by Martha MacCallum if he was offered the job earlier today when he visited the White House, he said it “came to a conclusion” this afternoon.
