CNN Prez Jon Klein Politely Tells Lou Dobbs To Shut Up About the Birther Story
Well, it looks like Lou Dobbs won’t be having any more “birther” debates on his CNN show.
CNN President Jon Klein put out a memo last night to Lou Dobbs staffers in which he declares, “It seems this story is dead.” Here’s his note, courtesy of TVNewser.
I asked the political researchers to dig into the question “why couldn’t Obama produce the ORIGINAL birth certificate?”
This is what they forwarded. It seems to definitively answer the question. Since the show’s mission is for Lou to be the explainer and enlightener, he should be sure to cite this during your segment tonite. And then it seems this story is dead – because anyone who still is not convinced doesn’t really have a legitimate beef.
CNN has already distanced themselves from Dobbs’ comments, but the notoriously independent CNN host showed no signs of letting up. On last night’s Lou Dobbs Tonight, the debate raged on.
Here’s the segment:

Tonight’s Hardball: Do Anti-Gay Groups Have Right To Protest Military Funerals?

This is such an ugly story: The Supreme Court upheld a reversed ruling that allowed members of Westboro Baptist Church to stage a loud and distracting protest outside of a cemetery where a military officer was being buried by his family. Originally the family had won a $10 million court settlement after their son's funeral - a gay serviceman who died in combat - was disrupted by church members (lead by Pastor Fred Phelps) - who claimed homosexuals are the reason God is punishing American soldiers overseas. The issue was debated on Hardball tonight, and it's a tricky one: First Amendment or not, what about the right to hold a private grieving ceremony?
Did Shep Smith Just Advocate The Changing Of Our Drug Laws?
Whenever the debate over Fox News' opinion versus news shows comes up, Shepard Smith is universally accepted as the paragon of capital-J Journalism at the cable news network. And we readily accept that -- we are big fans of Smith's homespun common sense and candid news delivery. So it was somewhat surprising to hear the Fox Newser make what seemed to be a potentially controversial remark about current drug laws when reporting a story about Mexican drug wars. Maybe Shep should have his own opinion show. I know I'd watch.
