Jon Stewart Discovers Equal Opportunity Birther Nagging On MSNBC And Fox News
Yesterday may have been the wackiest media day of the year, what with the wrath of President Obama’s birth certificate being unleashed on the world. To Jon Stewart, it was a day in which the media got to say “I told you so” over and over, whether they had told you so or not. Cowering at various lectures from all across the political spectrum, Stewart and Senior Black Correspondent Larry Wilmore handily captured the madness of the day.
Stewart found plenty of shouting matches on both sides, and while for MSNBC it was mostly a “victory lap,” he noted that Fox did a fair amount of disparaging birthers, too. Surprisingly, Stewart didn’t touch on the most ridiculous item of the day, Lawrence O’Donnell and Orly Taitz yelling at no one in particular, though he did whimper in response to a Last Word segment where O’Donnell appeared particularly outraged. Instead, Stewart found Ed Schultz shouting down one guest with the same question over and over along with O’Donnell’s lecturing, and on Fox, Bill O’Reilly and Greta Van Susteren asserting they knew it existed this whole time, and Shepard Smith just mercilessly tsk-tsking the camera. Of the latter he quipped: “Fox News: We report; you’re grounded, mister.”
But not everyone thoroughly dismissed the birthers once and for all, as Stewart found on Fox Business, “where the crazy for Fox is first test-marketed.” There he found Eric Bolling trying to find signs of Photoshop on the new certificate, mostly attributing his finding to Bolling being high, apparently.
As with the final chapter of the birther saga in real life, Stewart ended with an assessment of possible racism, which Wilmore was happy to provide. To Wilmore, the release was disappointing because it took away the President’s “air of mystery,” basically reducing him to Steve Urkel.
