McCain: ‘I Have No Beef’ with Jon Stewart, Late Night Comedians

Here’s something you don’t see every Sunday: John McCain on a television program.

The senator talked to Media Buzz’s Howard Kurtz about Jon Stewart and the Iraq War, criticizing the media for painting America’s withdrawal from Iraq without a residual force as mandated by the Iraqis, which McCain said was “just wrong.”

Kurtz asked if Stewart was fair to Republicans. “No,” McCain said. “But, you know, it doesn’t matter really. He’s a comedian.”

“He’s also a social critical who has a sizable following among young people,” Kurtz said. (This is a longstanding point of contention with Kurtz.)

“He’s a late night comic,” McCain said. “When he says things that are absolutely wrong he gets away with it. It is what it is. I frankly have no beef with late night comedians who make fun of politicians. That’s the nature of the business. I do resent respected commentators, who are columnists particularly, who say things that are absolutely contradicted by the facts. Like, oh, well, we wanted to leave a force behind in Iraq, but Iraqis wouldn’t take it. That’s just wrong.”
