Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced at a Sunday night press conference that terror suspect 27-year-old Jose Pimentel had been arrested Saturday after authorities uncovered he was planning on bombing targets in New York City.

“The suspect was a so-called lone wolf, motivated by his own resentment of American troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as al Qaeda propaganda,” according to Bloomberg. “He was not part of a larger conspiracy emanating from abroad.”

Police commissioner Raymond Kelly told reporters that police had to act swift. “He was drilling the holes and it would have been not appropriate to let him walk out the door with the bomb, so a decision was made to act quickly,” Kelly explained.

Kelly also said that the suspect considered changing his name to Osama Hussein after Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein.

A video of a pipe bomb similar to the one being made by Pimentel was presented at the press conference and featured a car exploding.

The NYPD will charge Pimentel with “terrorism-related” charges. Read the full complaint here via Reuters reporter Basil Katz.

I wonder if FOX will call him the ‘Occupy’ Bomber.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Eric-Larson/1589499840 Eric Larson

I thought Bloomberg would say something about being surprised about who the suspect was. I mean I am sure he thought the guy was probably just some home grown guy who was angy at the govt and didnt like the health care bill etc…etc….etc….. Just like who he thought the failed car bomber would be.

    BFD remember that?

A mexican with a pipe bomb?  Not impressed.

Where exactly does it say this guy is not a U.S. citizen? I don’t see it in the NYC DA Complaint document, or in the NYTimes article. He is described in the former as having referred to himself “also” as Osama Hussein, and in the latter has ‘a.k.a.’ “Muhammad Yusuf” – but this post here, and the Complaint, and the NYT article, all refer to his NAME (presumably the name he goes by since birth) as “Jose Pimentel”.

Also, I see in the Complaint that every ACTIVITY this guy undertook towards this, uh, supposedly “lone wolf” plot, was done in the company of a “confidential informant”, or CI – which we’ve see a BUNCH of from so-called “lone wolf” plots over the past few years – all of which look an awful lot like agent provocateur situations, where an undercover or paid informant finds some guy and gets him all excited about ACTING on stuff he was formerly just writing about online.

From first appearances – & this of course may change as the authorities decide to release more information – it LOOKS like they got onto this guy because he started up a website posting the sorts of things I listed in the previous thread which you can find all over the Net on all sorts of sites, extremist, nativist, biker, etc.

  • Rex the Wonder God

It COULD be convenient timing. The CI seems to have had tabs on this guy for quite a while, and the timing of the arrest certainly serves to ‘change the conversation’. But maybe it will change; recent similar arrests on similar operations suggests otherwise, but maybe.

Same as Obama telling Wolf Blitzer he was more worried of the lone American than a foreign or domestic terrorist. Imagine these 2 True Blue Americans thinking that they are more worried an AMERICAN will do harm to this country over a foreign terrorist. Makes you wonder who we elect into office.

Obviously, this calls for more drone strikes, an expansion of the Patriot Act, and more funding for the TSA.

  • Rex the Wonder God

Where does it say he’s “Mexican”? Seriously – I have not seen even a SUGGESTION that he’s not a U.S. citizen. If you have something that says otherwise, hey, be of some use here: give up the link.

  • Rex the Wonder God

This thing is starting to smell pretty fishy. Bloomberg and Kelly were BOTH asked by reporters if the FBI were notified on this, said the FBI knew about it, but then when asked why the FBI didn’t take over, went all STFU.

Now an FBI spokesman has told reporters the FBI “declined” to become involved.

Methinks Bloomberg and Kelly just put on a bit of puppet show with all this.

  • Rex the Wonder God

Well, in fairness, in the totality, absent going over to Europe for WWI and WWII and to Japan for WWII, Americans have killed a hell of a lot more Americans than anyone else from all the foreign countries ever has. That suggests, if you’re wanting to be sensible and all, you’d be a lot better off watching for “domestic” or “home grown” security threats than anything elsewhere.

For a parallel, consider how many presidential assassinations there have been, and how many of THOSE were by foreign nationals. Political assassinations in GENERAL in the US, extending into MLK & Bobby Kennedy & the recent one in Arizona, those tend to be done by citizens, not by foreigner or foreign agents; indeed, the only ever even SUGGESTED foreign agent linked POTUS assassination was with JFK, and a hell of a lot of people think that was US CIA instigated, at least in part, and can go on forever about how little there is to tie that into the USSR and how much there is to tie it into the CIA and winger extremist groups in the southern U.S. I’m not saying I actually BUY INTO any of that, because I’m in no better position to check out all the official documents and analyses than anyone else here; what I AM saying is that, generally speaking and in total, based on, you know, HISTORY, Americans pose a lot more of a danger to Americans than non-Americans do.

  • Rex the Wonder God

Okay, this is looking phonier and phonier. The Complaint mentions NOTHING about the NYPD tracking this guy since – get this – 2009. On it’s face, it only discusses 2011.

And look at this from the NYT report:

“Investigators also said he bought materials to make a bomb at a 99 cent store and at a Home Depot on Exterior Street in the Bronx. At the Home Depot, he bought elbow joints, gloves and Christmas lights. He was under surveillance by the Police Department when he made those purchases.”

Under SURVEILLANCE? He was WITH the undercover guy, the CI, the guy who’s been baby-sitting and NURTURING this Pimental for TWO FREAKING YEARS!

Now consider this: What is meant by “terrorism-related charges”? How about one count of possession of “bomb-making equipment”, i.e. Xmas tree lights, and GLOVES – stuff he bought at [Cue the sinister music] a 99 cent store, and [more sinister music] Home … Depot! Those well-known tell-tale purveyors of custom bomb-making equipment for your modern upscale terrorist from … Schenectady. And I am not kidding; he’s some guy from up state.

This is Security Puppet Theater 3000 stuff, without the stupid Aliens From Outer Space movie. Bloomberg is playing games to make it look like he’s Mayor Only Concerned For You Bloomberg. This joker couldn’t even make his bomb work; the NYPD went off and re-engineered their own version for part of the Show and Tell.

  • Rex the Wonder God

Okay, I’m reading that this guy was born in the Dominican Republic – Have you BEEN to the D.R.? It’s not exactly your hotbed of commie activity, it’s probably unparalleled in the Carib area for its right wing laissez faire anything goes history and economy and politics; it’s where MLB now gets it’s double-play combos from, for crying out loud – who, at some point I’ve not seen any info on yet, maybe as a baby, maybe as a teen, who knows – moved to the US, presumably with his folks, and is DEFINITELY a U.S. citizen.

So, we’re not talking al Qaeda underground, we’re not even talking Mexican or ANY Central or South American country, criminal, commie or otherwise, and we’re definitely not talking Arab or Persian or North African or any country associated with “terrorism” AT ALL.

Instead, we’re talking about a wannabe romantic, someone who’s maybe been treated like CRAP in the US because he’s Hispanic and got TIRED of continual second-class citizenship treatment, and started identifying with those ‘heroically’ taking on the Great Satan. He could have been reading comic books, fantasizing about the Green Lantern or Batman or the Justice League of America, or been like the Doonsbury character who fantasizes about being “the Red Rascal”, but no: instead, he collected warriors of the New Improved & Revised Muhammed of the early 21st century like baseball cards.

This kid is going to get his charges dealt down to possession of 99 cent store crap or Xmas tree lights “with intent”; I mean, possession of “bomb-making equipment” is even a stretch.

  • Rex the Wonder God

Oh gawd this is sooo STUPID: the NYPD gets the NY Post to go with this guy being an “Al-Awlaki follower” when in fact his closest contact is the same as ANY reader of Mediaite: he READ about the guy & his family, like … on the Internet.

That’s like saying I’m a follower of Frances Martel or Nando di Fino, or, gawd help us all, GD or any one of the right winger zombie memers here.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Eric-Larson/1589499840 Eric Larson

I don’t care if he is a US citizen or not. My point was to BFD and his comment. His memory seemed to have failed him about how all the tea party members were talked about and blamed for..

  • http://NowPublic.com/scrivener Scrivener50

Can’t false flag artists at least try to vary the script? Or are we to believe NYPD and the Mayor of Wall Street are just being duped?  Either way, taxpayers are footing a multibilliondollar bill for Homeland witch hunts and what look to be ginned up “plots.”

  • Anonymous

Oh no no no…Muslims love America and Islam is the religion of peace…lol  This guy is probably praying to Allah right now.

  • Anonymous

Which Lib/Prog is going to be the first to defende this guy?  Come on which of you loons is going to be first?

  • http://NowPublic.com/scrivener And furthermore…

According to Fox News,  “The FBI was briefed… but declined involvement,” a spokesman said.  WOW.  THAT SPEAKS VOLUMES.  Are ginned up false flag plots about to be exposed big-time?  Does mainstream media realize the significance of the FBI going to public with its non-involvement in this case?  I guess not, judging from the way the ivoer tower supplicants at The New York Times are playing the story.  When I have to rely on FOX NEWS for nuance, it is a clear sign that the gray lady is taking its last gasps.

  • Rex the Wonder God

Oh good grief: NO one is talking anywhere near to “defende [sic] this guy”. We’re just going for perspective. What it looks like is a Mayor of the arguably #1 city on the planet just having come through a period of over a month of constantly screwing up in the response to “invasion” by ground zero to the Occupy movement, which went from a dozen young people doing a street improv of “looking up” at something mysterious above ground, to a world-wide movement touching every city and town in the US, VILLAGES even, and every city of any size in the so-called western world, helped along nicely time after time by Bloomberg’s heavy-handed elite oblivity, desperately seeking some way to change the conversation and get the spotlight off his incompetence and his several quite obvious conflicts and his screw-ups, coming up with this little Terrorism Puppet Theater 3000 thingee in an effort to get someone to take his oblivious ass seriously for a change. If the guy was so stupid to actually go along with somebody he barely knew urging him to do things that, taken to conclusion, are really quite dreadful to even think about, then fine, it’s his ass on the line & he put it there. But when I see crap like “an hour away from being used”, I’m thinking: why in hell would anyone come up with a bull shit like that piece of “24 Hours” overproduced theater unless the facts are way LESS than meets the eye – as in like, I see a picture of this Pimental dude up on the front page of the NY Times and I am seeing major confusion, as in, What in hell just happened here? That “an hour away from being used” may mean an hour spent in the hands of someone who ACTUALLY knew what they were doing, as opposed to this screw-up in the picture, or even an hour this guy was showing REMARKABLE STUBBORNESS in not actually getting to spending, because he maybe wasn’t in the least sure he wanted to actually SPEND that hour doing whatever it was that was left to do.

Don’t you remember the scene in Rick’s American Bar in Casablanca, the town and the movie, where the French police chief turns to a junior officer and says, “Round up all the usual suspects for interrogation”, when he KNEW what had happened, and just wanted to create an official distraction to protect his friend Rick? That looks awfully, AWFULLY like what’s going on here. I think it’s ENTIRELY possible Bloomberg – a Republican, if memory serves – cast about for whatever piece of distraction might be at hand and ‘somehow’ came up with guy as a convenience – a guy who had been sitting in a holding pattern for gawd knows how long “an hour away from” completing or even theoretically completing this ‘maybe’ bomb who the NYPD was perfectly happy to throw as a bone to Hizzoner Da Mayor, in reward for his being so supportive while the cops were breaking heads and illegally confiscating equipment and DESTROYING private property of Occupy demonstrators.

  • The Real Royal Emperor

I’m pretty convinced this had much more to do with B’berg PR than a substantial terrorist threat.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_FSPIVAFYI672OH5NOKVRTEZA4U MadCharles

The only difference between this terrorist and those terrorist roaming the campuses and main streets of the USA aiming their terrorism at us returning from Vietnam is they were childhood playmates and high school classmates.
