Mika Brzezinski On Rich And Poor Disparity: Wealthy Are ‘Living Shamelessly’

You might have noticed our earlier post today about a New York Times article detailing how wealthy Americans are doling out money on luxury goods at a time when many others are scrimping and saving. This morning, Morning Joe‘s Mika Brzezinski also drew attention to the article:

“Talking about the wealthy and the dilemma that we’re in…,” she began. “Front page of The New York Times has this Bloomberg story and Mubarak, but I’m lookin’ at this. Ok. It’s a woman buying a 1,500 dollar pair of shoes.” She then read a portion of the original article before commenting that “there is a certain sector of our society that’s doing just fine. Just fine.”

After the group cleared up exactly how many shoes $1,500 can buy, contributor Mike Barnicle weighed in, drawing attention to the aforementioned article on Mayor Mike Bloomberg donating “billions” to a fund trying to improve the lives of poorer New Yorkers. “The disparity,” he noted, “between rich and poor in this city is enormous.”

“Rich and poor, black and white,” added Joe Scarborough. “The wealthy are getting wealthier,” he continued. “There has been a great recovery in this county if you’re rich. Wall Street profits are booming. The Wall Street Journal said corporate profits are higher than they’ve been in five years. But they’re not hiring people. The rich… since 2008, the rich have been getting richer for a long time, the poor have been getting poorer, but this recovery, I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything quite like it where the middle class and the poor are getting worse while the wealthy are getting faster, richer exponentially.”

Brzezinski then added that the wealthy were “living shamelessly.” Well, then. I’ll just keep this diamond encrusted “MIKA” tiara for myself.

Have a look at the segment, from MSNBC:

So Mika, you live in a modest home in Connetic

So Mika, you live in a modest home in Connecticut,  drive Ford and clip coupons, right?

  • http://www.storminsmorningjava.blogspot.com/ stormin1961

and it’s none of your effin business. what she’s really mad about is that after 2 1/2 years of Obama that these people still have some of their own money.

  • Anonymous

She’s got that right … I have no shame in being successful.  In fact, I’m proud of it.  I am the very definition of “living shamelessly”.  I’m also the very definition of “paying for everyone else who is dead weight” and the definition of “tired of being attacked for it”.

  • http://twitter.com/LippyBroad lippybroad

So she’s including herself in that mix right? Because I see how she’s dressed every morning. Pretty sure she’s not shopping at Walmart.

    Bubble-headed no-knowing twit.

  • Michelle

Liberals and their trolls in the media are so transparent.  Class war, race war, yawn!

  • Bob

How about the welfare mom who refuses to look for work and keeps having kids so the state can pay her medical and food benefits. If living wealthy is shameless, then sign me up.

  • Johnjguy

Ordinarily I would be inclined to side with low or no tax increases, but at this point in time it’s really rich to be asking the poor to tighten they’re collective belts and bear austerity measures for those rich who are struggling to scrap by on a few million.

The only pinch they’re feeling, I imagine, is the pinch of a pair of new gold plated shoes.

  • Valerie

Of course the rich have gotten richer. What do you think the intent of those swell Bush tax cuts were? To let the rich keep more of their money so they could rive the economy. they sure did a great job especially when you consider the net result of said cuts gave us TARP-1. That sure worked out great for everybody. Th rich got back all the money they lost and hand crafted a fantastic economy where everybody prospered. Oh wait-you mean that didn’t happen? You mean the rich who are supposed to be providers and job creators didn’t create a single job and instead are letting America flounder while they buy $1500 dollars shoes. Huh that sure doesn’t fit into any of the supply side memes I’ve seen recently. I guess when you get to keep all your lovely money through corporate welfare you’re absolved of actually having to help fix the problem leaving government to do it. I guess the icing on the cake is when Obama gives money to the American people via an economic stimulus he’s a commie socialist but when Bush gives cash to Wall street he’s…well what does that make him? I guess we’ll never know because whenever you ask a republican about it they scream and stomp their feet about Bush not being on the ballot. Its ok though as long as the GOP refuses to confront the failure of Bush’s policies Obama cold set the White house on fire and start eating babies on the front lawn and still win re-election.

The bottom 50% pay nothing.  We certainly can’t ask them to pay less.

  • Harry Flashman

I wonder how much her daddy brings in each year from his consulting business, the Center For Strategic and International Studies?

Not that I care. Make all the money you want, but I’d be willing to bet that he wears suits that cost more than the shoes that brought Mika to such despair.

I also wonder just how he and Mika shelter their money, what loopholes and dodges they use.

Mika is just another linmosine liberal, so convinced of her own moral righteousness that she can’t see that she’s not only a product of what she criticizes, she has met her enemy face to face – and she is it.

  • Valerie

Feel free to carry your tired fat ass back to Breitbart’s lie factory Ms Bachmann.

  • Anonymous

Can you believe that 100 people spent $38,500 each on dinner last night?

  • guelph

Come on, Mika.  The people with money are still free to spend THEIR money as they choose.  If a $1500 pair shoes is their preference, so be it.  It’s none of your business and none of mine.  So mind your own business!

  • Anonymous

Poor Mika- always the lib hypocrite.

  • Texan

    Mika, progressive hypocrite.

  • http://twitter.com/BarneyFranken Barney Frankenstein

Democrats think that if you are rich you must have had to steal from others to be successful.

Why? Because that’s how you become a successful Democrat.

  • Anonymous

it’s really rich to be asking the poor to tighten they’re collective belts”

Who said that? I think you just made it up. There were no taxes on the middle-class with the passage of the debt ceiling bill.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VZ6ZEMR7OJKTOCICKUVD2SCCZI Mark

There sure are a lot of wealthy, successful people anonymously commenting on political forums about how wealthy and successful they are.

  • Brad DC

God I wonder who makes those products how did those products get to that store. I wonder whose working behind the counter at these places. Must be the rich. Evil rich people

  • Greg

“Shame” is an ineffective frame.  The problem is a slow moving political system made all the slower by the fracture of a political party into mildly and wildly irrational factions.

I must say, you do have the Midas touch; everything you touch, turns into a muffler!

BTW, market down over 330 now- was down over 400!

Heck of a job, Barry. Can’t wait to see the unemployment number tomorrow. I’m sure YOU will be in it!

That’s because they have the free time to do so!

  • Dflojak

I’m poor and useless, but I’m glad for sunset, please keep spending your money, sunny, that’s what makes the REAL world go round.

  • TobyTucker

I suppose no one on Morning Joke considered that the sale of those shoes supported any number of jobs along the supply line including those of the owners of the store, those of the employees of the store selling the shoes, those transporting the shoes to the store, those providing services to the store, those providing services to the transporters of the shoes, etc, etc. These people are all generating fees and taxes that our beloved government can redistribute to the less fortunate. Instead of bemoaning the fact that people were buying expensive shoes, Mika should be encouraging the sale of even more shoes.

  • Valerie

And yet you cannot stop responding to my posts. Why is that a-holio? You need me to insult you and your asinine world view some more?

Yeah, the markets. Please do put a large cork in it.

  • Dflojak

Look who’s here, berated any poor, retarded children lately, you whore. This is the woman that yesterday made a reference to Tripp in a really nasty way regarding his handicap, so let’s be real nice to her.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VZ6ZEMR7OJKTOCICKUVD2SCCZI Mark

Thanks RS.  Being a dimwitted liberal (or is it librul? – I get very confused), I naturally assumed that some people – shielded by the anonymous nature of the internet – would lie, or at least exaggerate, in order to help them prove a point.

  • Anonymous

Oh, you must be referring to all the poor and middle-class people who attended Barry’s fund raiser. Thank God he didn’t allow any “rich” people to attend.

  • Dflojak

you got an extra copy of the communist manifesto I can borrow, douchebag. Hey, it’s just after the first, you get your welfare check yet, we can go buy some 40′s and a pack of hamhocks.

  • DeVoid

of course the rich their talking about are recepients of Obama’s stimulus and various other bailouts including bankers, wall street, teachers making over 100k, GM, GE and overpaid Goverment employees (union). Wall street is flush with cheap Obama money.  The Press fails to mention this.

  • Anonymous

Tone! Tone! You are melting down again. Do do other than name call?

  • Valerie

Hey you know what; I  did! Right after one of your cretinous nitwits brought up the retarded. Of course you missed that part. Why? I’m going to guess you’re just a run of the mill idiot. Sorry asshole-you lose-AGAIN!

  • http://twitter.com/BarneyFranken Barney Frankenstein

wow, rambling, illogical and misguided! You hit the talking points trifecta.

Here is Valerie’s point of view, in a nutshell.

    1) Poor Obama has been powerless to stop republicans from running washington.

    2) the rich dont really create jobs. (who does then, the poor?)

    3) Its all Bush’s fault even today.

    4) If the democrats have done something wrong, its that they havent done enough. I want more entitlements, more spending, medicare for all, and deficits be damned. Lets tax the rich at 100% to pay for it.

Did I leave anything out Valerie?

  • Michelle

There is no justification for the vile comments you made about a child.

  • Darladoon

just because mika is a hypocrite doesn’t necessarily mean that she doesn’t have a
    valid point.

in fact, i’m surprised she didn’t take it a step further and argue that the hedge fund
managers, for example, behind the credit default swap CRIMES are guilty of treason.

    there!

  • Valerie

Yeah I can point out when your posts make no sense asshole. You meant to type do you do anything thing other than name call?   If you weren’t melting down you might be able to complete a sentence.

As if you deserve civility. In the words of Jonah Goldberg-”go to hell.”

  • http://twitter.com/BarneyFranken Barney Frankenstein

Isnt that the goal, to have a life free from shame?

  • Valerie

Hmmm the subtle racism in equating welfare with “40″ and “hamhocks” is beneath contempt but hardly surprising.

But I already knew you were a worthless bucket of stale urine.

    Good day.

According to this article, in 2007 Mika the ferret was making close to $500,000 per year. Cry me a river, Mika.

No one brought up tripp, Palin or the retarded, you’re just a loser with nothing to bring to the conversation, so you name call and pick on retarded children. Real compassionate progressive, bitch. And with you, I couldn’t lose if I died first, so suck my dick. Why don’t you head back into your Mom’s basement and get back to dungeons and dragons, child.

No problem- most dim-witted libs such as yourself have to work for people such as me.

  • Valerie

See now you’re lying. Game over-you lose.

  • Darladoon

btw, mika makes a tiny fraction of what hank paulson makes, for instance

the guy who argued that credit default swaps “weren’t a problem serious enough to
    warrant regulation”

  • The Real Royal Emperor

She actually does drive a Ford pick-up.

  • Darladoon

so you believe that obama isn’t an actual liberal, then.

thank you for stating that ON THE RECORD

“Obama cold set the White house on fire and start eating babies on the front lawn and still win re-election”Your so right, with idiots like you that vote. You would eat glass and drink toilet water just so Obama can have another filet…. Please dont procreate

  • Valerie

Yes, if you guys want to bring up the retarded then you get Trip jokes. I’ve already caused three people to stop so on the face of it; I am victorious.

While you are old bitter and insufferably stupid.

  • Darladoon

course “communist” means “slightly raising taxes on the wealthy”

  • Valerie

Yeah you didn’t refudiate a single point. But nice try for an amateur!

  • The Real Royal Emperor

Democrats think no such thing. During difficult times, recessions, the Depression, all of our many wars, the wealthy lived circumspect. Being ostentatious in such times was considered tacky and boorish. It is tacky and boorish. It is also divisive. Of course, tacky, boorish and divisive pretty much describes today’s T-Partee Terrorists.

  • Darladoon

thanks for proving why democrats aren’t actually democrats

  • Darladoon

hank paulson made 39 million in 2006

mika makes 1/78th of paulson’s salary

  • Michelle

I think it’s you implying that only black people buy 40′s with their welfare checks.  Your mind obviously goes there when you hear those statements.  So who’s the racist again?

  • Anonymous

Every power movement needs a villan. For liberals it is the wealthy.By focusing attention on wealth they can deflect attention from the failure that is liberalism and the suffering that failure now brings to this country.

I don’t fawn over the wealthy like Republicans but I don’t demonize them either.Like it or not they are one of the more important job engines along with big business, another favorite liberal target.

Just because people and businesses are successful doesn’t automatically mean you must soak them of all you can get away with to fund massive government debt and spending.

  • The Real Royal Emperor

Pelosi was worth at least $35.2 million in the 2010 calendar year, according to a financial disclosure report released Wednesday. She reported a minimum of $43.4 million in assets and about $8.2 milion in liabilities.

So, basically what I’m saying is:  Can I have a job?  I can take over your Very Important Internet Commenting duties so you’ll have time to, you know, do more actual work, make gobs of more money, and trickle some more of it down to us “dim-witts.”  As you can already tell, I’m fairly good at the whole “sassy/snarky internets commenting” thing.  I can even post/pose as a conservative for you (or Resident_Conservative, as the case may be).  How’s this:  Obami is ruining this One Great Nation (do you like the capitalization thing?  very popular with Rich Hard Working Republicans).  Or:  The DemoRats and their ilk are socialist/Marxist pigs, stealing from hardworking [internet billionaires/real-estate moguls/etc.] such as myself!  I can even step into the character of a conspiracy-crazed right-wing talk show Republican Zombie, if should should so require.  If this is the role you need me to play, I will require an additional fee, as I’ll have to whip out some of my creative writing skills (learned at a Liberal Indoctrination Camp – ie, college – no doubt).

Thanks so much for your time and consideration R_S.  I’ve attached me resume and professional references for your review.  Please do not hesitate to contact me for more information or to schedule an interview.

    Regards,

    Mark

  • Just Curious…

Hello all! I’m a first time poster and new to this debate. There seems like theres a lot of passion around this issue. I just had a couple of quick questions:

    1. Has cutting taxes for the wealthiest ever reduced deficits?

    2. How does everyone here feel about the wealthy getting tax cuts during the Iraq/Afghanistan war? Was that one of our better moves? Did it make sense to cut anyones taxes when we knew we were in a war?

    3. Why can’t tax rates be adjusted to reflect more eveness as a percentage of income? It doesn’t seem like it makes sense that secretaries pay more in taxes as  percentage of income than CEO’s. I’ve heard the argument that the wealthy give dollar for dollar more than those secretaries/teachers/firemen. Is the argument that since a fireman might pay $7,000 in taxes, then Bill Gates should pay $7,000 in taxes also to be fair? I guess my real question is: What does the wealthy think would be a fair tax rate to pay and still have the country run efficiently?

I understand its a complicated issue, but I’m sure everyone on all sides of this debate realizes that we have a ridiculous tax code.

I’m bracing myself for your responses…Please be kind.

two points, and I know I will get flamed for this but bring it because I can dismantle any argument you have.

Read Charles Dickens and study Europe in the late 1800′s.  We are a long way from there, but we are headed in that direction.

Remember all this “wealth” is not liquid.  Most people of the higher percentage have a portfolio of stocks, bonds, dividends, and options.  Most of those are wrapped up in hedge funds and credit lines.  Much like it was 1929, 1987, and 2008.  The bubble will pop just like it did then, and these people will cry to government and get their “welfare.”

Anyone who claims to be a Christian and is arguing FOR rich people needs to re-read his gospels.  Actually, he wouldn’t be arguing for anything.  He would be helping the poor and not paying much attention to this “debate.”

  • TruDat

Yep.  I read the newspapers and watch the news.

  • Just some Blow Hard…

Ok lets look at your points

    1. Not Republicans, Corporations.  There is a difference.
    2. No they don’t.  Innovation and demands do.  A rich person by him/herself does not create jobs, if he/she invests in a operation to create a good or service that has a demand, then yes.  Once that demand dries up, then no.  The rich can also demand that those jobs be sent overseas using unskilled, cheap, and sometimes slave labor to make a bigger profit.  Hell there is a tax break fro companies who do that.
    3. Yes and no, Bush left office with a net loss of jobs, double unemployment, an unbalanced budget and triple (if you count the wars that werent on the books til 2009) the deficit.  So a lot of it hwas his fault.  But the economic policies (deregulation of banks and wall street, NAFTA, trade deals with China and Korea) started under Clinton.
    4.  Republicans want the same spending and deficits, just for defense, bailing out banks and wall street, rebuilding countries we just blew up, tax cuts for the rich, and tax cuts for those sending jobs overseas.  At least this is what happened under the last four republican presidents.  Also Cheney said deficits be damned.

So that 20 K, which is less than 1/4 of a days pay for Glenn, is probably going to go to a nice vacation for the homeowner, which means he’ll be stimulating the economy. where’s the problem here, cow man.

  • Dflojak

Cause your new, we’ll be nice. First off, I’m a righty. But I think there is alot of confusion amongst progressives regarding taxes. Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I think most conservatives want to first, get the budget under control on the spending. We’ve got to quit spending, and we then have to cut government waste. Once these starting points get underway, I think we all would like to see some sort of tax reform to make it fair for all. Help the poor, protect the middle class, and get rid of alot of bullshit lobbyist produced tax dodges that will piss off alot of rich people, but I think they would be more amenable to paying more of their income if they all felt that the waste and fraud were gone. Kapiche. So, it’s settled, you can all go home now.

Of course none of it matters because what the woman was doing was BUYING SHOES. Which meant the person who sold them to her was going to get paid. And part of that pay check was going to go to taxes. the rest was going to allow that person to buy food clothing shelter and entertainment of their own. imagine that.

The rich pay so the poor can keep it all.
Otherwise this Country would be running on hot air (oh shit – it is)

    lol – another brilliant statement

I would curb my tongue on your malicious statements against fellow posters if I were you.
You’ve proven that you’ve got nothing to counter with except slime.

Enough of the personal attacks.  You’ve called me a coward and a liar and couldn’t back up either statement.  What would that make you?

We are all sick of the filth you post – so just stop and start acting like an adult.

what is your point?  You’ve posted the same tripe twice now.

Since when has the debate ever been about Rich vs Poor…  that is a Democratic talking point and how the Democrats would care to frame the debate, but it is far from the debate that conservatives are having with the left.

Funny….total revenues collected from the top taxpayers during that time actually went up..Imagine that!

I wish it were so simple…  there are a lot of complicating factors when discussing the tax code..  but in general people like Gates and Buffett take their earnings in stock gains which are treated as capital gains and not income.. there are ways to address these issues but you first need a government to be willing to work for the country and not special interest…  it is note worthy to acknowledge there are ligitimate reasons for taxing gains at lower rates as gains taxes do have a very real effect on our economy,  but the short term gain situation does need to be addressed as the Wall Street tycoons are making a mockery of our tax system.  Dividends to corporate stockholders are taxed similarly to gains as the corporations in which they hold stock have already paid corporate taxes of 35%  on the businesses earnings, the dividends are then taxed at a15% rate so it can be said that they were in reality taxed at 50%  To tax those dividends at the full personal rates would be a gross form of double taxation.

Your example of $7000 is not a good one, when Buffet made that statement, it came after he learned that while he was taxed at something like 14% effective rate which probably reflected a 15% capital gains/dividend rate with some adjustments…  and the secretary was taxed at something like 23% effective rate and he felt that it was unfair,  most, myself included would agree with him.  There are a couple of things that should be noteworthy though, Buffett has years that he earns in excess of a $1 billion dollars so that 14% could reflect taxes of more than $140 million…  even so he should be taxed at a higher rate…  When the president talks of raising the marginal rates he is not talking about the rates on gains necessarily, he is talking about the marginal income tax rates which are completely different and already at 35% on earnings above about $373,000.

Thanks, news_junkie, for demonstrating the death of common sense. If you
can’t see that a $9,000 tweed coat is an example of shameless spending,
you really have lost your marbles.

And BTW, the point Brzezinski was making wasn’t that these people aren’t
allowed to spend their money, it’s that they have no right to cry that
they need a friggin’ tax break.

Wow…  my thoughts exactly…  Heavy on reform something very simple, fair in the end, and something that cannot be manipulated by special interest, Once the government can prove that it will stop it’s waste, and stop using tax dollars to purchase votes, I think that many on the right would be willing to address taxes, as in paying down debt and working on renewing our infrastructure.   I read that the Tax code has expanded to over 71,000 pages and that nobody really understands them anymore, I defy anyone to find an exact count of the pages in the Tax Code…  there doesn’t seem to be an official count.

these rich have no compassion for the poor. Did you hear about the woman who wore $500 sneakers to the soup kitchen and went on vacation in Spain in a $40,000 per night hotel? Her husband through a party for his birthday where guests paid $38,000 to come for dinner. Disgusting how these rich republicans act. Oh, wait a minute…

Just so you know, all the publicity shots show Mika wearing the red souled Christian Louboutin shoes.. Those babies will set you back $600-$700 . Someone should tell Mika she is wearing two weeks of food for a family of four on her feet.. I’m sure she has more than 2 pairs in the tiny closet of her tiny apartment.
She means well, but she is an adorable hypocrite.

This is rich.  All anyone has to do is google “Mika Brzezinski   salary.”  When you do you will find a page full of hits about Brzezinski complaining about how Scarborough got paid a lot more than her and, damn it, she was going to raise hell until she got the same amount.  Now, after securing her hefty contract she’s got the nerve to play class warrior.  These people have no shame at all.

Regardless of how rich this women is or isn’t,there is a fundamental question here. The gap between rich and poor is growing and continues to grow. There is a limit here. I do not know what that is but every society that trends towards this way in history has had a revolt in some form or another. Its interesting as te tea party revolts against the govt in its own way. Expect a similar revolt from the poor soon if this trend continues and it wont be pretty. I am not being partisan on this issue. It is a real concern and in the long run is what could cause major problems of civil unrest in the future.

I admit when I was wrong.  But they do pay a lot less than any individual.

  • Just some Blow Hard…

yes because only poor people smoke and drink.

Um.  We monitor different types of consumer spending as indicators for the health of our economy.  This finding, coupled with the recent report of stagnant overall consumer spending, is indicative of our massive income disparity.  The lower end doesn’t have enough money to pay for basics and the higher end has so much money, they’re blowing faster than ever.

  • Anonymous

I don’t think the rich are living ‘shamelessly’.  That would imply that they actually had an idea of how bad it is for so many people.  I think the rich are largely ignorant of the economic suffering.  Evidence of this can be found in Dana Perino’s recent statement insisting that if you can purchase a $5 dollar coffee drink, you can pay for birth control.  What she does not seem to recognize is that there are millions of people in our country that cannot afford that frappuccino.

  • Anonymous

Just as rich people are free to spend money as they wish, Mika is free to admonish them for behavior she finds tacky.

  • http://www.storminsmorningjava.blogspot.com/ stormin1961

and again i ask, what business is it what rich people do with their money? there’s a reason why they have the money they do. there smarter with it. there harder working. there more motivated to succeed. if people with less money want to have more money then they need to do the same things rich people do to get there money. the only thing thats preventing the poor from having more is themselves. they are there own worst enemy because they do stupid things with there money. i am by no means rich (in the sense of having tons of money) but that’s because of me and nobody else. nobody ever got rich just by whining and complaining and resenting the rich. one other thing, nobody is ever going to get rich by listening to Obama either.

  • http://www.storminsmorningjava.blogspot.com/ stormin1961

your absolutely correct BB, and he is being rightly investigated for it.

“and again i ask, what business is it what rich people do with their money?”

And again I state, it’s an economic indicator.  We aren’t looking into each individual purpose, so I don’t think your ‘privacy’ argument makes much sense.

And regarding your comment about the poor, what a horribly ignorant, insensitive and incorrect thing to say.  I grew up pretty much smack dab on the poverty line and my dad is the hardest working individual I know, having kept three jobs at a time in order to keep a roof over my head.  So, you can really take your attitude about the poor and shove it, as far as I’m concerned.

Do you really think salary is a good indicator of competence?  I would figure the fact that the assholes whose incompetence destroyed our economy in the first place making thousands of times more than an average american family would serve as a pretty good indicator that that concept is BS.

“Of course, tacky, boorish and divisive pretty much describes today’s T-Partee Terrorists”

That is a great description of what you have described. Which is why you will not find said attributes in the actual Tea Party. We don’t condone the actions of the “T-Partee Terrorists”, otherwise known as the racism perpetuation arm of the Democrat party, founded after the dems lost the support of their original enforcers, The KKK.

Correct. Now, I would agree that Murdoch’s SCANDAL RAG TABLOIDS may pry into personal lives, but how is that a surprise anyway? I wasn’t surprised at all by the cell phone hacking business, I thought we’d agreed by now that was a given with the foreign paparazzi-class. If they’re willing to chase the Princess of Wales until they crash and die, or stalk celebrity children to school, if they are willing to go to extreme lengths including putting lives in jeopardy, what makes you think they’d think twice about hacking your cell phone?

Envy is an ugly thing, Mika; doesn’t look very good on you.  And promoting it just appears petty.

“Do you really think salary is a good indicator of competence?”

Seeing as we have no other commonly accepted benchmark of success in our society, at all, then yes, I would have to agree that it is.

Corps pay less than individuals. But corps also pay higher corp taxes than any other country charges. So logically, both our individuals and our corps pay higher taxes than most of the world.

Perhaps we need to be more internationally sensitive and lower our taxes to be in line?

  • Anonymous

All the more reason to chuck the entire tax code and replace it with:
Line 1: List the income from your W-2
    Line 2: Multiply line 1 by 10%
Line 3: List answer from line 2
Line 4: Take answer from line 3, pay this amount federal tax and return this form.

For EVERY citizen, for every income. A fair and impartial tax which eliminates hundreds of thousands of draconian laws, would eliminate the waste of thousands of IRS bureaucrats, and both better fund our government and not punish anyone unduly.

The fact that in 2010 I paid in $50 in federal withholding and received a refund of $1500 just for being a student almost made me sick. I don’t deserve a free ride, tax free, and neither does anyone else.

  • Just some Blow Hard…

Higher taxes than in China? You sure about that? How about all of Europe? Tax rates won’t bring jobs back. Cheap and/or slave labor is what keeps the jobs away.

And no, I am pulling for an old fashioned trade war.

    LMAO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First of all, it’s hard to take ANY of this article seriously since it involves the crew of “Morning Joe”, who take levels of outright HYPOCRISY and a talent for spewing BULLSH*T to all-new levels each and every day.

For example, take Mike Barnicle. This is a guy who has not only made a VERY pretty penny from his reporting and writing work…which is THEN coupled with a freaking TV salary for appearing on “Morning Joe” or other MSNBC shows…which is THEN added to other public or speaking appearances he makes BECAUSE he’s become a media figure due to his appearing on the show…

..But in the BIGGEST CROCK OF ALL, this is the SAME moron who — if you watch the show regularly — whenever they talk about money ALWAYS starts sentences with the laughable disclaimer: “Well, before I say anything, I should note that my wife is a big wig exec with Bank of America.”

Bottom line: the buffoon and his wife are NOT hurting for money.
Yet he continually loves to play himself up as a blue collar schlub — which HE IS NOT.

Which, of course, makes it all the more HYSTERICAL that lard ass himself makes this observation…

QUOTE: “After the group cleared up exactly how many shoes $1,500 can buy, contributor Mike Barnicle weighed in, drawing attention to the aforementioned article on Mayor Mike Bloomberg
donating “billions” to a fund trying to improve the lives of poorer New
Yorkers. “The disparity,” he noted, “between rich and poor in this city
    is enormous.”

HIS EXAMPLE OF CHARITY IS MIKE BLOOMBERG ????
ARE YOU JUST F***ING KIDDING ME ????????????????????????

Amazing!  His brilliant example of charity is a guy who did EXACTLY what all the Wall Streeters — you know, those evil guys that these morons are now criticizing — did to make HIS money. And while people on Wall Street might be working as brokers or agents or execs….making thousand or hundreds of thousand or even millions in return….

…Barnicle’s BRILLIANT comparison is a guy who used the system to acquire BILLIONS.

And Barnicle’s BRILLIANT example of “charity” is a guy who then BOUGHT the mayor’s office in the last election, by spending an UNGODLY amount of money. In fact, the LARGEST AMOUNT IN HISTORY.

But hey!  Making BILLIONS off the system and then BUYING the mayor’s office is a GOOD thing when you desperately need to make a point. What point these clods were making is beyond me, but hey — at least they filled their air time spouting more BULLSH*T.
