NBC Universal CEO On Olbermann’s Exit: “This Was A Decision Made By NBC News Management…”

Amid plenty of talk about the new owners coming onboard at NBC, there was a moment during today’s NBC Universal “town hall meeting” that jumps out. (And no, we’re not talking about the new corporate logo that sidelines the NBC peacock from its corporate perch, though it remains a fixture of the NBC brand)

As Mediabistro’s Alex Weprin reports, new CEO Steve Burke was asked–by none other than NBC News anchor Brian Williams–what exactly led to the departure from MSNBC of Keith Olbermann.

“This was a decision made by NBC News management, Steve Capus and Phil Griffin,” Burke said.

He also reiterated that Comcast had not yet assumed any control over NBC Universal, and thus could not make any personnel decisions, but that Comcast execs were aware of what was happening.

Williams asked, “What led to KO’s departure?”

New CEO Steve Burke replied, “Have you ever met or watched Keith Olbermann?”

Williams then mumbled something unintelligible and left the room, shaking his head.

NBC has a news management staff? Uhhhhh…..maybe they’d like to axe their news staff and try recruiting some Must See TV.

They can say it as much and as often as they’d like, but there are a lot of us out there who don’t believe it for a second. They walk and talk like a duck. They’re ducks. Or something that rhymes with it.

MSNBC had a big deal about Lawrence’s ratings monday getting more viewers then Keith? Well people were tuning in to check out his show. But in the long run they will regret losing such a great talent. I Would love to see Keith take his hundreds of thousands of fans to HBO and do a Bill Maher type show or even if he did an online Countdown show eventually MSNBC will realize that Keith was the best host in their lineup. I love Ed Schultz and Rachel but no one could get my attention focused on the tv more then Keith.

Hmmm, I wonder when comcast takes over if they would be able to bring him back? Just a thought.

Such a great talent? You are delusional. He reads a script that was written by his staff. He can not have anyone on his show that disagrees with him because he is not intelligent enough to form his own thoughts to debate with. So other than the fact that you agree with his insane rants please tell me what his “great talent” is?

Translation = Please don’t send me anymore e-mails.

    Getting fired!

Well tell the NBC news team to not stop with Keith. PMSnbc is loaded with shows that nobody watches and in fact are not worthy of being watched. Morning Joe, The Edith Show. Sarcastic Lesbian Rachael Show. Andrea Mitchell. I could go on but, that is a good start.

    @ beaman

That’s why all the lefties hate Beck, right?

  • http://twitter.com/SailRabbits Magister

One assumes that Brian asked the question to help underline that Comcast and senior network management weren’t directly involved in the decision. One might even think it a plant or pre-arranged, if the question hadn’t have been so natural that a third-grader would’ve asked.

As for Mr. Williams’ personal position: I’m under the impression that the leftward slant of MSNBC and perhaps Mr. Olbermann in particular was why he rarely appeared on the network any longer and as I’ve pointed out a couple of times in comments, when Keith declared himself the one true journalist and all those claiming balance were pretenders to the throne, Mr. Williams would obviously be in the latter group.

  • beamangrow

no beck is just stupid and crazy, you know like palin

  • timzank

Anybody who thinks comcast didn’t have this pre-arranged is an idiot. Mergers and acquisitions of this size are all based on hard assets, of which on air talent and contracts are a major part.. Any event involving millions of dollars in compensation and the future viability of the franchise would be etched in stone by both sides.

In other words, when a merger/acquisition is in process you can’t change the players without agreements in advance.

  • http://twitter.com/SailRabbits Magister

@Timzank: The snip and all previous reporting has said that Comcast had been made aware and had been informed. We’ve also learned that Olbermann and MSNBC had been in discussions possibly since he returned from suspension, so I’m sure Comcast knew (and approved) that the players were going to change.

  • Arkansas Steve

    MESSAGE TO BRIAN WILLIAMS:

Keith Olbermann was let go because he is a masogenist scumbag & much more.
If he were ONLY a masogenist scumbag, like ed schulz, cenk whatever, & chris matthews, we would have kept him on and just asked him to LEAN FORWARD (bend over) and take it like a man.

However, since Keith’s comments actually put Comcast’s subscriber list in jeopardy of moving to satellite service (because they are so repulsed by him) we put him out with the garbage.

  • Grammie

Who cares who made the decision.

It was a decision that needed making!

  • Scrapette Jones

As someone with experience in strategic planning with m&a’s, I feel pretty confident guestimating that the real reason for Keith’s being let go was indeed Comcast’s choice, and it was probably for the simple reason that they perceive him to be a wild hair, a loose cannon as an employee. Simply put, the NBC management family could and did suffer him, but corporate Comcast would not. I’m sure that Comcast told NBC to fire him, too, ie, gone by the time they arrived.

I suspect that Matthews is being looked at for the same reasons, or has already been talked to and it’s not yet been announced. This would account for Chris’ pms attitude lately. When he is agitated, his veneer wears off and we see the mysogenistic, bitter prig that he really is. It’s almost like clockwork, too. He is really being bothered by something, that is for sure, and it isn’t Michelle or Sarah. They are just the dogs he kicks. I’d feel sorry for his wife, except she asked for it when she married him.

I am hoping that Greenspan’s screw-ups that led to the economic meltdown will be getting even more coverage than what came out today, because this increases the chances that Andrea Mitchell might suddenly retire (one can only hopehopehope). Or we could get lucky and Comcast will call her on what NBC should have years ago: conflict of interest.

MSNBC really does need all new personalities – a thorough clean-out (I suppose Maddow would stay since she is new and has a few regular viewers; same for Lawrence ODonnell).
