NBC’s Andrea Mitchell: The Rap On Iowa? ‘Too White, Too Evangelical, Too Rural’

Video

NBC’s Andrea Mitchell offered a rather blunt analysis of Iowa as she covered the state’s upcoming caucus race for Nightly News.

“The rap on Iowa,” she said. “It doesn’t represent the rest of the country… too white, too evangelical, too rural. Still here, politics are personal.”

RELATED: Chris Christie Threatens To Go ‘Jersey Style’ On Iowa If They Don’t Vote For Mitt Romney

After noting that Iowa Republican caucus-goers don’t really have a “very good track record for picking presidents,” Mitchell spoke with network political analyst Mike Murphy, who described the Iowa caucus as being part of a sort of “winnowing out” process when it comes to candidates.

Would the media, then, do well to ignore any headway a candidate makes place in any state housing a Pizza Ranch?

Have a look at Mitchell’s take on the “rap on Iowa” below, via NBC:

So the rap on Iowa is that there are no rappers, there’s no Kathy Griffin taking off her shirt in public, no dope fiends camping out in public parks?

What a hellhole !

• http://www.storminsmorningjava.blogspot.com/ stormin1961

well we can’t have that. is there something our government can do to rectify this situation?

• News Of The World

Pretty much on target with that analysis, Andrea.  Iowa is about as backwards as they get.

• Anonymous

“The rap on Detroit,” she said. “It doesn’t represent the rest of the
country… too black, too violent, too urban. Still here, politics are
personal.”

See… all of a sudden you would thing the same thing is racist. Weird???

So you and her are proud racist.. Looks good on you. :)

The ‘rap’ on NBC reporters:  too elite, too urban, too condescending, too narrowly educated.

Equally accurate description.

• Anonymous

“Doesn’t represent the rest of the country?”  Someone should point out the ’08 election map to Ms. Mitchell.  It’s 90% red.

It’s funny that you think the use of white, evangelical, and rural are negative.

let’s not forget CNN’s Wolf Blitzer and his racial views on New Orleans:

Would she rather Iowa be like New York City, where one of America’s greatest actresses, Ellen Barkin, was brutally clubbed by a squad of police thugs?

• Anonymous

‘Too White?’ This Leftist media shrew should check the color on her own network. ‘Too Rural?’ Spoken like a haughty Lib elite who thinks the world begins and ends in New York City (like the famous New Yorker cover decades ago…parody works when truth is involved).

Dude, You simplify EVERYTHING to ABSURDITY!

• Charles Ulysses Feney

Somebody please ask Santorum about him being a big Jerry Sandusky fan. Rick’s a “diddler enabler”!

Rick Santorum sponsored Penn State serial pederast Jerry Sandusky for a” Congressional Angel of Adoption” award at a time when Sandusky, a two time national assistant coach of the year, couldn’t get a coaching offer because of a national whisper campaign regarding his fascination with little boy’s bottoms!

Sandusky “retires” from coaching at 45!!!! (1999) after he had already been caught showering twice with the victims.  In 2002, Penn State grad Santorum sponsors him for the award, further enabling him to build the ring he used to catch more kids, right as coach McQueary catches him a third time buggering a kid in the Penn State showers.

But it gets even better! Santorum sponsors Sandusky for the prestigious award, yet denies he’s ever met Sandusky!!!! A Penn State Senator has never met a Penn State national assistant coach of the year and designated JoePa successor????
“Me thinks he doth protest too much!”

This article is a distortion of how Andrea Mitchell was reporting this story.  She was not relaying her personal opinion here.

She was discussing the criticism that many people on both sides of the aisle have had about the Iowa caucuses:  the idea that Iowa is not representative of the country and that it should not have such a huge impact on the nominating process.

She wasn’t relaying her personal opinion…she was discussing a criticism that has been leveled by people in both parties.

“poor in SPIRIT” means humility- not poor financially.
Matthew 19:24 refers to an actual location, a passage way in the ME that you could only pass through on a camel -no extra possessions could be taken through with you because it was so tight you had to squeeze through it. Thus derives the meaning that “you can’t take it with you” – you leave this Earth/physical realm with only your soul. Again absolutely nothing to do with finances.
There is nothing wrong with having money, as long as you don’t worship at the alter of $$$ and it’s importance and priority in your life doesn’t take the place of God.
To whom much is given much is expected.

• Henry Wood

Luke 6:20 “And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed be ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God.”

http://www.biblicalhebrew.com/nt/camelneedle.htm

“For the last two centuries it has been common teaching in Sunday School that there is a gate in Jerusalem called the eye of the needle through which a camel could not pass unless it stooped and first had all its baggage first removed. After dark, when the main gates were shut, travelers or merchants would have to use this smaller gate, through which the camel could only enter unencumbered and crawling on its knees!

Great sermon material, with the parallels of coming to God on our knees without all our baggage. A lovely story and an excellent parable for preaching but unfortunately unfounded! From at least the 15th century, and possibly as early as the 9th but not earlier, this story has been put forth, however, there is no evidence for such a gate, nor record of reprimand of the architect who may have forgotten to make a gate big enough for the camel and rider to pass through unhindered.”

This is just another example of fake christians reinterpreting the words of Christ to mean something other than what they say, because actually following the teachings of Christ proved to be inconvenient.

….Except that more people actually live on the coasts and in places like NY, DC, LA, SF, etc. than live in middle America.  Just look at any map of the US population.

Given those realities, what specifically makes Iowa “more like America” than those places?

How dare Andrea Mitchell be blunt in speaking the truth.

Funny, where is Fox News’ headquarters?

• http://www.facebook.com/mitchell.s.gilbert Mitchell S. Gilbert

NO! Much of the Midwest and deep South are more rural & evangelical than the big cities.  But the majority of Americans ARE NOT rural-white-evangelicals.  We live in large and moderate cities throughout the country with particularly high concentrations on the East & West Coasts.  Andrea Mitchell is right.  Iowa is not reflective of America.

• Anonymous

Sure, the map looks Red when you put all the states with 5 people living in them together.

• http://pulse.yahoo.com/_GPF5WQCF4VQAYV5JMZ2M35ETKM aleven

From what I’ve read the Republican primary in Iowa is dominated by fundamentalists, so it seems odd that everyone’s making a big deal out of the results of an election whose outcome is controlled by a relatively small number of the most backward, uninformed Iowans. I really don’t mean to insult  these people, but, in this day and age, to take the likes of Perry, Bachmann, Gingrich, etc seriously indicates a great lack of commonsense and education, political and moral.. If I’m not mistaken Iowa has a large and  progressive Democrat Party and Obama overwhelmed McCain in 2008. Obviously, this is what the real Iowa is about. Also, while I’m appreciative of MSNBC, can anyone tell me what Andrea Mitchell is about as she is married to Alan Greenspan, who was one of the most bizarre, nut jobs in government as the head of the Federal Reserve and inflicted his Ayn Rand philosophy on the world. Has she ever apologized on his behalf?

• Anonymous

“fake christians”???

Since you are taking the vow of poverty as synonymous with being a “real christian” I assume you currently live by handouts on a street corner in all your misguided righteous religious glory. Being poor isn’t a condition to get into heaven.  The glory of God isn’t always found in being broke in finances but broke in spirit. God uses anyone – no matter what the balance of their bank account is- His criteria is measured by the heart and obedience.
You missed my point completely- Jesus did not condemn those who had money – only those who put wealth and the glory and power of money above their commitment to God acknowledging that He is where all blessing flow. It takes a charitable heart to help those in need but more specifically it takes money.

Dear Surfergirl,

I am not a Christian.  It pleases me to quote Yeshua to those who take HIS name in vain for all their petty political purposes.

Go back to Norcal’s quote, to which I responded.  Yes, Jesus is “glorifying” the poor and chastising the wealthy.

If you claim to be a Christian, but also are a member of a political party that demonizes the poor and exalts the wealthy, then you are a fake.

• Anonymous

The point is… would she say that about Detroit? or any other minority area… If not …it should be clue that her comments are out of line.

nothing will happen to her because the whole media industry loves the entitlement welfare crowd. That’s the main voting block for Obama’s reelection..

• Anonymous

Henry,

What political party hasn’t demonized the poor or used a demographic of any criteria (race, wealth, equality, gender…) for their own purposes? The Founding Fathers would certainly come under the constraints of your criticism, not to mention anyone who is not a ‘Believer” would be rendered a hypocrite by reciting the very words of our Pledge of Allegiance.

You somehow are to willing to overlook the point of wealth -that it is not wealth, in and of itself that Jesus is chastising it is that those with money who have chosen to put wealth above God. It is a spiritual application, not being a Christian I can understand why it is so easy for you to pass judgement without understanding. Literal meaning is lost on some, when discussing the tenants of a belief/faith based on  supernatural concepts.

Having
grown up in Missouri and married someone who grew up in Iowa, it is easy to see
what Andrea Mitchell means.  And she is
absolutely right. Unfortunately for my stupid red necked idiot brethren who are
frozen in time back there, they will always see the truth or the facts as
elite, urban, condescending or narrowly educated. The sad part about that is
the fact that it comes from people who are indeed poorly educated and live in a
bubble that is an alternate reality.
Even with a college degree in most cases….such people are still idiots
who living in an alternate universe that is controlled by their masters in the
GOP.  You all know the
type….”quick to judge, quick to anger, slow to understand….ignorance,
prejudice and fear walking hand in hand.”  Anytime someone presents the facts in an
unbiased way like Andrea Mitchell, people like Missouri Mule always retreat to
that tiny little GOP corner of their simple mind where it is OK to yearn for
the good ole days of burning witches and placing burning crosses in the front
yards of innocent people who do not espouse the same twisted skewed right wing views
with twisted skewed right wing political ideology and twisted skewed old time
religious ideologies. Coming from any right wing extremist from the Midwest,

Awesome!  It is refreshing to hear someone put things into correct historical perspective.  I was once one of those brain washed evangelicals who attended 2 separate Southern Baptist colleges to learn bible, religion and theology.  Rather than becoming indoctrinated like so many of the drones who attended those schools, I came out understanding that most denominations of Christianity are very messed up and the people they indoctrinate are in most cases…very messed up people with very extremely flawed thought processes.  At this point in history…God and Jesus must be getting very very tired of all evangelicals and their efforts to plug their twisted interpretations of Christianity into political and economic affairs of the country and the world.  At this point, Satan is probably even sick of all evangelicals as they have promoted more twisted perversions of ideologies than even he could have devised.  I would imaging that the devil must be pretty down hearted at this because evangelicals and right wingers have destroyed this nation far far beyond anything he could have imagined.

What effin’ planet do you live on?  So, he’s a “true Christian”?  What is that:  a guy who clearly hates gays and lesbians but can’t stop obsessing about them?
“Small town roots”?  Don’t make me laugh.  What would those be?  Inbred, pasty-thighed Klan members in trailer parks?
“God on his side”?  So, you actually think that, out of the 7 billion people on this planet, some nondescript far-right bigot politician has the ear of a supernatural being who controls space, time, and cosmic creation, thought without one jot of proof of its existence?
If anything, you’ve proven that, on the evolutionary continuum, American right-wingers like you are somewhere below patio furniture on the intelligence scale.

Too Evangelical to be representative?  In fact, many African-Americans are Evangelical, and Protestantism (from mainline to Pentecostal & Evangelical) has a growing presence in Latin America and among Latino-Americans.

Almost any state has a racial, ethnic or religious composition that could set it apart from the mixture in another state.

Those who ridicule Americans who love Jesus Christ know little or nothing about the founding of this country and why we have been blessed for so long.  I encourage any person who denigrates Jesus Christ to first go back and study his life and his princilples, then to back and study the prophecy that tells of a messiah and savior and finally to study the religious beliefs of our founders.  It will quickly help anyone understand that America, America, had God shed His grace on thee.  Compare the blessings of America with any other country on planet Earth.  There have never been any countries that compare to the philanthropic work and love of Americans to people worldwide.  Billions have come to know Christ world wide because of the outreach of the Christian Faith.

She is not stating this as her OWN PERSONAL BELIEFS…what don’t you people understand about that…ridiculous …..Furthermore, there are more non-minority Americans on welfare than any other ethnic group…who do they vote for….and I work 40 hour a week in an office job…..who should I vote for……unless you folks are wealthy, you are just as un-cared about by the republicans as those in the “welfare crowd”. Andrew Scott, Thank

You raise a good point: There is a national average (for number of Muslims, Jews, Catholics, Protestants and others) and each state might vary from that national average.

It is one thing to say a certain place is more Catholic than the national average (RI, last I heard, was the only state with a Catholic majority, but perhaps information is old).

It really does have another connotation to say Rhode Island is “too Catholic.”

Notice you added the implied modifier “to be representative  of the country” because you know that without that modifier, without that qualification explicitly said, it really does sound judgmental, even thought most of us know what she meant.

Thanks again, Scott.

• http://brianomalley1776.blogspot.com/ Brian O’Malley

Dear Conservatives: You know she probably did not mean a harsh judgment on the people of Iowa. You know there might have been another way to phrase it.
Dear Liberals: You also know there might have been another way to phrase it.

“If local provincial pride and jealousy arise, and you allow yourselves to speak with contempt of the courage, character, manners, or even language of particular places, you are doing a greater injury to the common cause, than you are aware of.”

No one says that a 100% Black neighborhood needs more diversity.

No one says that a 100% Muslim neighborhood needs more diversity.
According to anti-Whites, they are already 100% diverse.ALL White neighborhoods and ONLY White neighborhoods need to be more diverse. White neighborhoods only stop needing to be more diverse when there are no White people left in them.
Diversity is a codeword for White genocide and anti-racist is a codeword for anti-White.

• J Bianca Jackson

Yeah, except Detroit is a city, not a state and any election there is not the opening number to primary season. If you consider that Detroit is in the state of Michigan, Michigan is still a more comparable racial demographic representation of the United States than Iowa, even though they both have proportionally smaller Latino population than the national numbers.

If you would like to point out reverse racism, then you should at least compare apple to apples, not oranges.

Personally, I think they should take that list that ranks the state by the per capita ratio of (federal tax dollars received)/(federal tax dollars contributed) and give the states with the lowest numbers first dibs at the candidates. http://visualizingeconomics.com/2010/02/17/federal-taxes-paidreceived-for-each-state/
Only half of the states with elections preceding Super Tuesday have a ratio of less than 1. New Jersey has consistently had the lowest or 2nd lowest ratio for the last 20 years, and it’s part of the second to last group of states to vote in the primary cycle. That is what I call the short end of the stick! Moreover, it’s racial demographics are comparable to the nation’s.

Violence is relevant. And violent felons are a large, untapped potential source of future voters. If they could Democrats would let death-row inmates vote on their way to the death chamber. Unfortunately Dem’s have to wait 18 years for the children of illegal immigrants to reach voting age. So that’s an investment in the destruction of our country that won’t pay off politically for some time yet.

Speaking of taxpayer burdens, did you know that Iowa gets back 10% more in federal funds than it contributes? And that so called liberal havens, like California and New York, pay more than 20% in federal taxes than they receive? Please explain to me who is the one sucking off the government’s teat?

Personally, I’m from NJ and the Presidential Primary Season perpetually puts me in a chauvinistic rage. I’m a moderate, I’ve voted for both Democrats and Republicans. In fact, in during my lifetime, our only good governors have been Republicans. But because NJ is a Northeastern Blue State, I have listen to the condescension of middle-American Republican politicians imply that my part of the country is not representative of the “real America” and is dragging the rest of the country down with it’s homosexual, atheistic, welfare queens, in an effort to kiss the butts of Iowans. Forget the fact that we’re pretty purple, or that we contribute 40% more in Federal taxes than we receive, or that we’re in the top 2 highest per capita earning states, or that we have a highly diverse and dense population, or that we have a highly diverse and dense economy, or that it’s the home of the 3rd largest international shipping port in the country (and largest of the coast) thereby making it a VERY REAL national security target.

Every four years, I have to hear a bunch of dipshits get hysterical over their Red Dawn, To Wong Foo and Precious fantasies. I am very, very tempted to vote for anyone endorsing the elimination of federal income tax, because I would like to see how those poor “real Amercian States” would survive without the blood of the rest of us.

• Steven Bannister

Wow, a Jewish liberal who is critical of white, Christian America. How surprising!

• Steven Bannister

Because “the Left” is dominated by Jews at the top and they use race as a wedge to divide and conquer. Haven’t you figured that out yet?

• Steven Bannister

I’ll define “Real Americans” for you – LEGAL US CITIZENS who swear to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States.

That’s as good a definition as any.

• Steven Bannister

There’s a theory called “Competitive Altruism” which contends that whites try to “outdo each other” by being more staunchly anti-racist than other whites. It’s essentially a “status thing.”

• Steven Bannister

Yes, isn’t it funny how the racist “too white” state of Iowa chose Obama over Hillary in 2008!  Oh wait, that must mean they are sexist too!

• Steven Bannister

Thank God.

There’s no such thing as too white or too stupid for fleabaggers.

Oh, please.  Will the blacks be running America as well as they have run, oh, I dunno… Detroit?  or Somalia?  or Haiti?  And the Mexicans have done a real bang up job with Mexico, haven’t they?  Maybe you meant to say “running the country into the ground”  or possibly, “running amok in the country.”  Both of which are already in progress, unfortunately, and both something to be afraid of.

• Anonymous

If white, christian America had any idea just how much Jews, and particularly the secular jewish elite, fear and loath them, they’d be shocked. This is why Jews almost universally support massive third-world immigration (+multiculturalism) into the US (and Europe). A buffer zone.

• Anonymous

I accidentally “liked” your comment and have reasonable suspicions that you are not, in fact, all that cool.

• Anonymous

I’m certain the feeling is mutual.

• Anonymous

Steven, that’s a large leap for many. They need to be fed in smaller doses. One can choke even on the truth.

• Anonymous

Forgive me if I don’t buy you all’s trash about how the big bad white anti-white racist Andrea is some major threat to your existence.

Paul,
What does the Gospels or Jesus Christ have to with America, as if we are the only Christian country on earth? What about the other ones that weren’t so “blessed”? Maybe most of wealth comes from abundant resources, water farmland etc that is unavailable in the old world, as well as a much lower population density and weak friendly borders and neighbors so people didn’t have to fight over land to survive.

You are so ignorant and self centered. Finally, to show how childish your rant is, at the time of Jesus, The Americas were unknown to them. Your take on  religion is nothing more than some cheesy nationalistic celebration of mammon.

Glad to see you embed your antisemitism inside some more conventional and acceptable flyover red state self pity. BTW, scheisskopf, you low brow bigot, “Adler” or “eagle” is not always a Jewish name, it can be a German one too.

• Anonymous

Well do you live there? Do you think they are suffering because of (Your contrived) anti white racism?

• Anonymous

Brad, spare us the phony outrage! The racists here are the ones who are twisting this into a race thing so they have another excuse to rant against blacks and Jews, even though she is neither

• Anonymous

That is such a paranoid racist lie, but since you self identify with Germans, I’ll assume you are a Nazi. Even though Nietzsche was no Nazi, the Nazis identified with his nihilism.

You show all that is wrong with today’s conservatives, You are anti-intellectual to the point of plain thoughtlessness. You conjure up antiwhite racism to justify your own racism. You talk is glib generalities that are dishonest, You use terms like the “lamestream” media that only fools who watch and listen to right wing trash media use. You are backwards, bigoted, reactionary and hatefilled. No wonder why most decent educated people look down on a miserable throwback like you. So keep whining!

• Anonymous

I’d rather hang around the elites than the self pitying conservative trash heads I find here

• Anonymous

Well , you certainly feed that stereotype.

• Anonymous

So only Christian pigs can use the term Amen?
Jews use it to, low brow fool!

Most racists are right wing trash like the morons here babbling about how racist Andrea is or some mythical anti-white genocide Obama is hatching, so STFU,
BTW, Byrd renounced the Klan, like 50 years before he died, and Wallace left the Democratic Party to start a racist southern one. So maybe you should get you facts straight for once in your miserable life. Turn off the talk radio and FOX and open up your little head for once.

Actually , white Xtian bigot, while she married a Jew, she is not Jewish, Despising low class trash like you is instinct for a lot of people like you. It has nothing to do with race.

Making fun of an old guy with bad eyes and an older woman who lost her looks, how classy and intelligent can you get?

• Anonymous

My experience is that true racists always go on about how they are really the ones being victimized by anti-white racists, The Nazis claimed the Jews started all the wars, including ww ll, and were out to kill them,

• Anonymous

And most of the people sliming her here would be defending him no matter how awful his comment was

• Anonymous

Wow, he named some Communists, he is so smart!
Sorry my pal, but Washington, Adams, Hamilton, Jefferson, Franklin were not only not evangelicals, if religious at all, but they were educated, The exact opposite of most the cons here.

• Anonymous

You really have a way of being genteel and subtle.

• Anonymous

The only blatantly racist crap here comes from paranoid white trash here who go into victims mode at the drop of a pin to justify their own latent bigotry. So quit playing your race card, it expired.

True, but to these rednecks on this board, they act like she is the vanguard of some antiwhite genocide.

MORRISMINOR,

“You ignorant sluut”

Protestant Evangelicalism was born in Britain in  the 1730s and the American Constitution was created in 1787,  A majority of the signatories were Protestants who by then, were influenced by or committed too, “Evangelicalism.”

Moreover, as a Socialist, you live under the myth that “Washington, Adams, Jefferson, etc., were a-religious, which is nonsense.  Those men were men of their time and “men of their time” were religious to varying degrees.

Now go to your room!

“Sorry Pal”

The word “Pal” is peculiar to the east. Philadelphia, Jersey, New york?

White Republicans don’t take a back seat to any group when it comes to running things into the ground. Their greed and ignorance makes them standout losers.

• Anonymous

Well calling Jefferson & Franklin evangelicals is a stretch even for right wing fantasyland. As well as some were Anglicans, Catholic, Quakers, etc. hardly evangelical to me.

So I guess we should only have white Protestants run things, since that describes the bulk of the founding fathers? Following your “logic”, we should wear wigs, write with quill pens, ride horse, light our homes with candles & oil lamps & sail in wooden sail boats, cause, heck, our founding fathers did.

• http://www.therightcommentary.com Dave

You got wrong, lib. You socialists have a long history of racism toward blacks if they step off the Democratic plantation. Ask Clarence Thomas, ask Herman Cain. You are anti-semites, you are disgusting filth. No wonder you identify with the Stinking Movement aka Occupy Wall St. You people need to take your own advice, the race card expired, but you STILL use it, comrade.

• Anonymous

MORRIS,

Some 200 men are considered to be “Founding Fathers” as they were signatories of the various documents, a vast majority of those men were Evangelical Protestants. (Note: I argue that many, named and unnamed, men and women were Founders also)

You owe me a complete apology as I have been reasonably civil to you despite your attitude!

As for your comment: “Following your ‘Logic,” we should wear wigs,” etc., such is a ridiculous and juvenile non sequitur. The fact is my original comment was accurate, yet contained a hint of mirth.

In the future, I would appreciate your respect, as such would be an ideal way for you to acquire mine.
