Obama to American Imams: Be Less ‘Boring’ So We Can Stop Youth Radicalization
As President Barack Obama stated at today’s terrorism summit, leaders of America’s Muslim communities must be the first line of defense against the radicalization of disillusioned young people. Step one: stop being such olds.
Obama, no stranger to reaching out to young people via the internet, asserted that “the high-quality videos, online magazines, the use of social media, terrorist twitter accounts” used to attract young Muslims were effective tools, and that the communities — family, friends, teachers, etc. — needed to counteract their influence among the youth.
But it is kind of hard: as Obama noted, “the older people here, as wise and respected as you may be, your stuff is often boring.”
“Compared to what they are doing!” he clarified as the crowd started guffawing.
