O’Reilly And Marc Lamont Hill Clash Over The Media And Whitney Houston’s Drug Use

Bill O’Reilly opened his Fox News program Thursday night by recapping his media tour this morning, and slammed the media for not being more critical of drug abuse in the wake of Whitney Houston’s death and asked Columbia University professor Marc Lamont Hill whether the media should take an advocacy position on the issue. “Who said to her, ‘hey, this is wrong not only for you, but for your daughter,’ O’Reilly pressed Hill. “Tell me one person who did that?”

“Her family did!” Hill interjected.

“That’s not the media!” O’Reilly exclaimed. “She sat for major interviews and nobody looked at her and said you know what? You should stop this and this is terrible and it’s sending a terrible example to other people.”

“I don’t think that’s the media’s job, Bill,” Hill replied. “I don’t think as journalists our job is to go around wagging our finger at people.”

“Our job is to tell the truth!” O’Reilly boomed.

It should be noted that Diane Sawyer grilled Houston over her drug use in 2002.

I must have missed the interview O’Reilly had with Houston over her drug use. Does anybody have the link or is Bill just being a monday morning quarterback.

I think BillO is off the ranch a little on this one, particularly that it seems to besmirch such a good person and great talent.

“I don’t think as journalists our job is to go around wagging our finger at people.”

    LOL.

    A ‘short-bus’ person with a ‘long-bus’ degree. What a laugh Leemont is.

media advocacy? now he wants bias? lol he’s confusing his lies so much he can’t keep up with himself any longer

     You’re a Ron Paul person?

Why is this guy still perceived so unelectably, if that’s a word?
I liked him when he first started talking about minding our own business and not giving the Fed carte blanche to print money.

Are you a RP fan, or did I misread that.

He was a little over the top, and at the wrong time.
It’s at least as bad as having that Grammy pre-party while her body was still in the tub, three floors above.

    Nice.

Yet another of O’Really’s cablecasts filled with his uninformed opinions?  Yeah, he and who else are left still whining about the crap that marijuana is a gateway drug?  Utterly laughable.  Has anyone heard the hypocrite calling for the Prohibition of alcohol and tobacco?  When he does that on his program, then I will sit up and pay attention, for he will appear to be aiming at logical consistency.

Until then, while he remains eternally and forever logically inconsistent, he can be routinely and safely ignored.

Why is it that we make saints of drug addict performers after they die? From Presley to Houston, the same ridiculous wails of mourning go on.

Bill is such a clown, to even say “our prisons are NOT filled with crack addicts” WOW, what a dolt! How can you take anything he says after that serious!  There is an unproportionate amount of people in prison due to possession of small amounts of drugs, if you remove drug offenders from prison system , it would drop by over 50%. What an idiot!

Hey Bill while you’re worrying about Whitney… what up at home with the MRS.????
she still creepin with that policeman in L.I.?

    YEP !

Oprah Winfrey discussed it with her a few years back.  If it were as easily taken care of as O’Reilly makes it sound, nobody would have a problem.  As someone in the entertainment business, you’d think he’d be especially aware of how people can insulate themselves from help and even gravitate toward folks who are going to make it worse.  For O’Reilly, it’s just the outrage of the week;  he’ll be on to the next one, soon enough.  As usual, all heat but little light.

Sooooo hypocritical.  Obesity kills more people than heroin and crak, shortens children’s lifespans, affects their health and happiness, in epidemic proportions.  Where’s his baying for advocacy about that?  The quality of distaste he has about him?  That’s himself he’s tasting. He grovels to the rich and successful and doesn’t give a rats for the ordinary American.

You’re right Jono.  It’s the way liberals protect themselves by adoring people just like them

Man the dark of the moon really brings out the left loony trolls on this site.  It is so predictable to see these late night in the dark comments from the weak and simple minded liberals kids and former hippies.  The real loser in this discussion is the affirmative action racist LaMont.  Now there is a loose cannon.

This Lamont guy reminds me of Lamont Sanford.

whitney houston was drug addict a horrible example to her daughter and rude to unbelievable level (at least publicly) and then we have the flag half staffed- disgusting!!!!! She had everything and threw it away- Sorry folks she was a lost soul by choice and Bill is correct on his assessment

  • sid_id

Instead of Bill yelling at what could have been done, why isn’t he yelling about what he will now do to address this problem and solve it once and for all. It’s easy to point your finger after the fact.

  • http://twitter.com/kelly396 kelly murphy

Here’s some facts moron.  Limbaugh, Beck and Imus did not use crack.  They each have beaten the addictions they suffered.  Where is the proof that O’Reilly harassed anyone?  How is he racist?

You are just an ignorant, angry lefty who parrots Media Matters just like your heroes on MSNBC.

Got some facts to back-up this absurd claim?

I’m sure Bill has never consumed alcohol and prescription drugs in conjunction. Although I mean, yeah, with the internet, not knowing Xanax + Booze = dangerous is their own fault.

Addiction is something O’Reilly knows nothing about, among most other topics he covers.  He ignores readily available material on subjects, in this case addiction, and bullies and half-shouts thru his segments like a bull in a china shop.  If you replay what O’Reilly said in this and other segments about addiction, he has NO IDEA WHAT HE’S TALKING ABOUT.

Same thing with politics.  Same thing with everything else this jerk says.  He gets a lot of ratings just for shouting over people and trying to make them look stupid.  But when you really break it down and study what he says, he’s really an overbearing, opinionated jerk!

  • Anonymous

So you think it was the job of journalists to undertake an intervention on Whitney Houston?  That’s what O’Reilly seemed to infer.

  • Anonymous

Evidently you have no relatives or close friends who are “good” souls and whose lives are being ravaged with drug/alchohol addiction.  Or if you do, maybe you are the lost soul since you apparently don’t give a damn about anyone’s soul you think is “lost.”
