Rep. Rangel To Eric Bolling: Govt. Work Helps Minorities Because The Private Sector Is More Racist

video

On of the main tenets of Eric Bolling‘s show Follow the Money is that a free market economy is fairer and more successful than one administered by the goverment. Tonight, Rep. Charlie Rangel ventured onto the program to make the opposite case: that government jobs were in some ways more attractive, because minorities and women experienced less discrimination.

Bolling opened the floor by asking why the president promotes government jobs. The distrust of the government didn’t surprise the longtime Congressman, but he noted that “a lot of women are involved in these lower income jobs, a lot of minorities,” and later explained, “the government doesn’t have the racism and discrimination that the private sector enjoys.” This, to Rangel, means that “a lot of people could to better with the government job,” both minorities, women, and the elderly, working in places such as the post office. Bolling asked again to confirm whether he really meant the private sector had discrimination.

“There’s no doubt about it,” Rep. Rangel replied. “People don’t like to talk about it because it’s uncomfortable,” he noted, and he explained that this wasn’t a new phenomenon, as Irish and Italian immigrants had felt the same, which fed the size of local governments in urban areas. He noted that he was only positing one theory about the success of government employment, that minorities “feel better, that they’re getting a fairer shake, that it’s more fair and balanced than getting an interview in the private sector.”

The Army Corps of Engineers hires some brilliant people but sitting next to them can be a totally incompetent person. The incompetent are not fired, they are given no job assignments, they just sit at their desk and do nothing. If you are incompetent, you too can make a success with the government and your coworkers will tolerate it.

As usual Fox cherry picks from the CBO Study:

PayFederal employees with a high school diploma or less earned 21 percent more than private-sector employees with similar education levels.Federal workers with a bachelors degree, on the other hand, earned about the same as private-sector workers.Federal workers with professional or doctorate degrees earned about 23 percent less than those with the same degree levels in the private sector.

What was that Shirley Sherrod said?  ”Have you heard of anybody in the federal government losing their job? That’s all I need to say.”

I said it before, I’ll say it again. It is utterly amazing that people like Rangel and Obama have even made it where they are, considering everyone and everything, apparently, in America is racist or about racism.

America has no history of slavery or racism. People don’t inherit the misfortunes of their parents. America’s founding fathers were saints who never did anything wrong.

You people live in a dream world. America has had a terrible and disgusting history of slavery and racism. People inherit their ancestors misfortunes. America was found after wiping out millions of Native people and on the back of people who were considered 3/5ths of a person.

You are surprised there is still racism in the US? Really? No, you are not. You are just a racist yourself who thinks people should get trampled on and shut up and take it. Well, tough luck because why should they? To please you?

Not until racism ends. Why do you feel the need to defend racism? I know why: because you are a racist.

When far right wing racists point to advancements, the very advancements that they fought tooth and nail against, made in equality and bridging socioeconomic gaps as evidence of how utopia-like things are for minorities and other oppressed groups and as evidence that nothing further needs to be done

Sometimes they even take credit for these advancements as Eric just did there. “I have a black president”. The audacity of these people

“Govt. Work Helps Minorities Because The Private Sector Is More Racist”

Apparently old Charlie has never heard of the inherently-discrimantory Women/Minority-owned Business (WBE/MBE) “outreach” efforts that contractors are required to perform just to be eligible for contracts with public works departments in many major cities.  Contractors are required, or at the very least heavily-pressured to spend a pre-determined, arbitrary percentage of their contract value on subcontracted work through minority- or women-owned business.

Take the City of Los Angeles for example.  If you show up for an LA DWP (Dept. of Water & Power) pre-bid meeting, three quarters of the meeting is spent, not on the scope of work or what is to be constructed, but on the requirements for WBE/MBE outreach efforts, including all the documentation that must be kept to verify good-faith/best-effort attempts.

It is a grotesque process in that it “weights” certain races/genders over others, based on their perceived scarcity in the general market place.  (This in and of itself is a problem when you consider how incompetent the department runs its own operation; how would they have any clue as to what the general private sector demographics are composed of?)  As an example, a Hispanic male-owned vendor would not carry as much weight (in LADWP’s “valuation”) as an African-American woman owned vendor.  In either case, if you’re a white male in Los Angeles (which, in DWP-territory ironically, should technically be considered a minority, but DWP doesn’t see it that way) you’re at a significant and inherent disadvantage to sell anything from ice, porta-johns, safety equipment, office materials, basically any material and/or equipment that can be sold to an enterprise that holds an LADWP contract.

It is a specifically-flawed process that tries to solve a problem that exists only in generalities.  It also encourages dishonesty with loopholes that skews the statistics, when you consider that many men put their companies in their wife or sister’s name just to shelter it under WBE/MBE categorization.  Judging from his corrupt past, I’m guessing ol’ Charlie knows a thing or two about loopholes…

  • Anonymous

Gee, it might have something to do with him being a highly successful businessman.  Where Bolling often stumbles is in details of the political process, which he hasn’t been an expert on but has been learning in recent years.  This helps in a way since he’s an outsider and although he’s ideologically a conservative he isn’t invested in politicians or positions.    As for being ‘trounced’, Fox Business only launched about a year ago, and as with any new channel its taken work to get them onto more cable systems.  They’ve been growing well enough and are very likely to lead the other channels in the near future.   It took Fox News 5 years to become number 1, and they’ve not relinquished that standing since.   Businessmen who aren’t already ideological stuck on stupid know who understands business and who doesn’t.

Some of the biggest slave owners were freed blacks. So what’s your point?

  • http://www.sarainitalyblog.blogspot.com/ sarainitaly

Oh, how original – call me a racist. *eyeroll*

Dear, the President of the United States is an African American. There are black millionaires and billionaires, Oscar winners, Grammy winners, sports heroes, members of Congress, entrepreneurs, film studio owners, television moguls, inventors, college graduates…How is it possible these people have succeeded if we are a racist country?

I think American has come a long way….

I am not surprised there are still racists in America, and the world, just as I am not surprised there is still sexism and bigotry, in America, and around the world. Ugly people exist. Tell me how your comment toward me are any different than someone who stereotypes a black person or calls them names?

Tell me a country that doesn’t have a history of slavery (btw – there are more slaves today than ever in history) or that wasn’t at one time or another, conquered and colonized?

Yes, America has an ugly past. Past being the operative word.

Emma Thomas, racism will never end, based on the entire human history.

What did ever stop so-called “native” Americans to load up their ships, use their exquisite talents in navigation and seamanship, and go and do to Europe what Europeans did to them?

    Same question for Africans.

Mind you, it is certain and can be taken for granted, that if they had been successful in their quest to do so – unlike the hateful and racist white people – they would have been loving and compassionate and non-racist and gentle to the white people they conquered.

     What the DNC and liberals/progressives don’t understand……….

The constant harping and cries of racism, will turn voters of both parties off in the future. Voters will be less inclined to vote for an African American, knowing this vitriol will rear its ugly head again!

     Exactly!

I think YOU need to read up on your history, it was the “racist” Republican President Lincoln that fought a war to free the slaves.

It was also the “racist” Republicans that voted for the Civil Rights Acts, MORE than your beloved Democrats, check it out, you have been suckered by the very Democrats that you think enable you.

Every single item that the Civil Rights Movement and Act fought against was a creation of or supported by the Dems.  Slavery?  Dems.   Segregation?  Dems.  Jim Crow?  Dems.   KKK?  Dems.  Separate but equal?  Dems.  Appointing racist KKK members to SCOTUS?  Dems.  Internment camps for minorities?  Dems.  Segregate military? Dems.  Segregate govt? Dems.  “White Only?”  Dems. Voting restrictions?  Dems.   In that list, just where do you find “right wing?”

No, you are a racist because you are intent on denying it. The past stops with no traces, as we all know. Pleeease! There is nothing original about racism and when I find a more original way to point out your racism I will let you know.

If you could get away with calling people the N word, you probably would do it. There is a very easy way to eradicate racism: stop defending it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Emma-Thomas/100003357377085 Emma Thomas

    That proves what exactly?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Emma-Thomas/100003357377085 Emma Thomas

No, you are the one obsessing about it. Stop saying racism doesn’t exist. It is such a ridiculous point of view. My guess is you would call people the N word if you could get away with it. People who are keen to deny racism are racists. Why else would you deny an obvious fact?

  • Anonymous

Enable me as what? You display the very quality you’re trying to dispel by assuming what I am and who “enables” me, if I was what you think I am

Lincoln was 150 years & history books ago, you can’t keep riding his coattails forever.

Fact is republicans have since disavowed Lincoln’s legacy by their reprehensible conduct and relinquished it and relinquished what he stood for to the democrats

Your error-laden post notwithstanding, you don’t get a pass obfuscating history by telling people to go “read”. Fact is more democrats voted for the civil rights act than republicans.

Fact is Martin Luther King Jr. holiday was voted against by republicans by a margin of 5 to 1 over democrats

You name the type of anguish and suffering minorities get to face in this country on a daily basis and you’ll find modern-day republicans to be the source behind it.

Were you too young in 2010 to remember when the source of republicans pride, the Tea Party, treated us to their insightful rally signs featuring misspelled racist epithets and depictions of the president as a witch doctor with bones across his nose. That and the myriad other creative displays of utter racism.

Want to rephrase your comment and get back to me?

Millions of “native” Americans?   Little high on your totals aren’t you?  Yes, their slaughter was disgusting as was the “institution” of slavery.  But both were the way of the world at the time.  That does not justify the actions, but it does explain them.  Had the “native” Americans (actually people that emigrated here from elsewhere) had  the fire power, they would have enslaved or slaughtered the “invaders.”  A study of American history will show you that most of the aggression against the American Indians was government sanctioned-not all, but most.  But all of that and our sanctioning of slavery (by a section of the country, not all of it) is in the past.  Is Germany a disgusting country today because of what it did to other Europeans in the  run up to WWII?  Emma, virtually every country in the world has a disgusting history.  Humanity itself has a disgusting history-deal with it and move on.

Rangal is probably right in a way.  Certainly the Feds can’t show racism even if it exists.  In the private sector there most certainly are racists, and there always will be.  But at the business/institutional level there are rules and laws that are supposed to be followed.  If a minority prospective employee can prove racism/discrimination the employer will be faced with a huge lawsuit, and rightfully so.  There is a fine line between an employer having the right to hire whomever he wants and discriminating against a minority prospect.

Your response to Sara was vindictive and uncalled for.  She knows individual racists exist, but her point was that we have come a long way from the days of slavery, and it’s time you recognize that and chill out a little.  Your attitude only fuels those that are racist, and makes those of us that aren’t cringe.

  • Anonymous

It sounds like the private sector needs too pay better wages.

Plus the government is less likely to fire you when you get caught with your hand in the till – Rangel is proof of that.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_26RF4GLSDA7QJ33HKOWBLETPBY Gary

One difference is that private business is free to hire the most qualified person.  The Federal government gives preference to minorities, veterans, and persons with disabilities, and the most qualified person is not always hired.

Are you familiar with Princeton Sociologist Devah Pager’s study on race at work?

” I investigate discrimination in low wage labor markets by hiring young
men – who differ only by race, ethnicity, or criminal background – to
pose as job applicants, presenting identical qualifications to
employers for real entry level jobs. My work shows substantial evidence
of hiring discrimination, with black men receiving call-backs or job
offers at only half the rate of equally qualified whites. In fact, a
young black man with a clean record does no better in his search for
low wage work than a white man with a felony conviction.
    Though
discrimination is by no means the only– or even the most important–
cause of contemporary racial inequality, this research suggests that
discrimination remains far more prevalent than most Americans would
    expect.”

    http://www.princeton.edu/sociology/faculty/pager/

That’s why myself, and millions of other African-Americans are sick and tired of hearing these BS idioms and platitudes about how “fair” America is in regards to race, and get all up in conservative grills when they bitch about Affirmative Action.

Right. Glenn Beck tell you that one?

    Christopher Columbus:

“On October 12, 1492 (the first day he encountered the native people of
the Americas), Columbus wrote in his journal: “They should be good
servants …. I, our Lord being pleased, will take hence, at the time of
my departure, six natives for your Highnesses.” These captives were
later paraded through the streets of Barcelona and Seville when Columbus
    returned to Spain. [4]

From his very first contact with native people, Columbus had their
domination in mind. For example, on October 14, 1492, Columbus wrote in
his journal, “with fifty men they can all be subjugated and made to do
what is required of them.” [5] These were not mere words: after his second voyage, Columbus sent back a consignment of natives to be sold as slaves. [6]“

Part of what he says has credibility.  Another part says if some minorities could negotiate the English language rather than sounding like a Romeo Miller commercial for ICDC College, jobs in the private sector would be more available.  In addition if African Americans would stop naming their children after a week’s worth of Maury Povich “you are the father” guests mainstream hiring would be a lot higher as most companies don’t want people like Terranius, Shenequa or Nevaeh working the front desk or representing them on a sales call.

Oh yeah, by the way Nevaeh is Heaven spelled backwards which Maury makes a note of after every moron decides to name their kid Nevaeh.

I am saying that, contrary to what the left tells you, 100% of the items which are addressed in Civil Rights are constructions of the Dems.   And that crap about the racist South is just bunk as the Dems had NO problem with the racist South while it was perpetrating these horrors.   The racist Dems in govt didn’t switch parties and get elected as Repubs, they LOST. (excepting Thurmond).  And how do you respond to FDR placing a KKK member on the SCOTUS?

  • mac691

A smaller percentage of Dems voted for the Civil Rights act.  The only reason that an aggregate number of Dems voting for it was larger is that the Dems had huge majorities.   And by the way, each and every problem that the Civil Rights Act seeks to cure is a construct of the Dems.   Not 150 years ago, but during my lifetime.   The Dems have moved from one form of racism to another, affirmative action because Blacks are inferior in their minds.

    White genocide is big business:

Africa for the Africans,Asia for the Asians, white countries for EVERYBODY!

Everybody says there is this RACE problem. Everybody says this RACE problem will be solved when the third world pours into EVERY white country and ONLY into white countries.

The Netherlands and Belgium are just as crowded as Japan or Taiwan, but nobody says Japan or Taiwan will solve this RACE problem by bringing in millions of third worlders and quote assimilating unquote with them.

Everybody says the final solution to this RACE problem is for EVERY white country and ONLY white countries to “assimilate,” i.e., intermarry, with all those non-whites.

What if I said there was this RACE problem and this RACE problem would be solved only if hundreds of millions of non-blacks were brought into EVERY black country and ONLY into black countries?

How long would it take anyone to realize I’m not talking about a RACE problem. I am talking about the final solution to the BLACK problem?

And how long would it take any sane black man to notice this and what kind of psycho black man wouldn’t object to this?

Southern DEMOCRATS, after the Civil War, organized the KKK to thwart Northern Repubs reconstruction after the war.  It pretty much died out until 1920, when it was revived by DEMS,  after the racist Woodrow Wilson’s presidency, to thwart any civil rights progress throughout the country.   A large foundation for the KKK was in several northern industrial states, having a large union population.  At NO POINT are Republicans associated with the KKK.  That would be a lie of revisionist history.  You are the party with the despicable history, own it.
