Report: Katie Couric Offered Daytime Talk Show, Role On CBS’ 60 Minutes

CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric, whose contract is set to expire in June, may stay at the network as a correspondent for 60 Minutes, according to a report in the New York Post. The paper’s Michael Shain cites “network insiders” saying “an offer to become a regular correspondent for the prestigious Sunday night TV magazine is part of the package being offered Couric–if she’ll stay and do a projected daytime talk show for CBS.”

As Shain notes, Couric’s current contract calls for appearances on 60 Minutes, but “the show’s notoriously prickly producers failed to give her any assignments.”

According to the Post and other reports, 60 Minutes‘ own Scott Pelley remains the frontrunner for the Evening News role after Couric.

For her part, Couric’s kept quiet amid the rampant speculation, with a spokesman telling the Post, “Katie’s on vacation this week,” he added. “Hopefully, the speculation about Katie can take a week off, too.”

Couric is off this week scouring the country for a nice overpass, within close proximity to an abundant supply of well maintained shopping carts, to move into once her undeservidly high salary is no longer.

  • marigrace

A wise man once said, “Before a man speaks, it is safe to assume he is a fool, after he has spoken, it is no longer necessary to assume!” The same applies to some women especially some who work for CBS.

Katie could replace Andy Rooney .

Did you ever go to buy some tennis balls and come home with a can of Pringles ?
Did you ever wonder why there are no Canadian food restaurants ?
And why don’t the chefs on the Food Network wear hairnets ?
    Hmm ?

    That makes no sense whatsoever.

Yet, Ms. Couric pulls in 3 – 4 times the number of FOX “News” viewers. And, she is not a success?

  • Tony the Fist

Don’t particually care for Couric or 60 Minutes, not my cup of tea. But do you know what shows I’m definitely NOT going to watch? Nurse Jackie and United States of Tara. Just out of spite for these damn pop-up ads.

The Pop-Ups are, indeed, irritating. But so are the mentioned shows.

She’s only on 30 min. Let her try and maintain that for 24/7 like Fox News. Apples and oranges.

Why is it in the news industry you can fail up and/or sideways??? In the medical field, if you fail you get fired, sued and don’t work again. Must be nice to be a lib in the MSM.

Would she be getting the same offer if she was a man? I doubt it.

It’s more the difference between “doing news”, in the ABC, BBC, CBS, CNN, CNN International, NBC, NPR and PBS mode, than “doing talk” in the FOX “News” and MSNBC mode.

I would argee that Fox and MSNBC are more opinion-tainment.

  • newzmaker

I haven’t viewed Couric as a serious journalist , for a number of years. Like too many journalists these days, Couric seemed to be more focused on achieving ‘celebrity’ status, than concentrating on her profession. Couric’s highly publicized political activism didn’t do much to help her image either. Once journalists lose their credibility, a new career, altogether, might be the better option. Perhaps a job on the “E” channel, could be in her future.

Somewhere Palin is sipping a mojito and smiling. :)

What excuse is he making? He’s only making the point that Couric has a ridiculously easy half hour show that she failed miserably at. Maybe if she didn’t hate flyover country with her liberal elitism……..nah.

What Facts are you talking about. Remember you guys are always going on about ratings this ratings that. When it was actually pointed out that it has nothing to do with ratings, even if it was about ratings (Fox has no chance). That is when you remembered the 30min excuse. Perhaps people just want to listen to the damn news instead of talking heads who cry about the end of days, at the same time selling their personal products/services.

Fox doesn’t have night-time news programs. However, I bet that if they did have one against the same CBS time slot, Katie would still be getting fired. Now, I will look forward to CBS airing the unedited Palin interview.

    Waiting…….

What Facts??? How about the FACT that CBS news last 30 min??? Did that slip you mind or do I need to explain the difference between Network and Cable news???? And stop talking about MSNBC that way… they are trying and if you don’t like their talking heads, crying, or product hawking… don’t watch MSNBC.

Funny thing is, the network, apparently unlike yourself, has realized they’re ( viewers ) aren’t tuning in due to Couric’s presence, rather most are there in spite of her being present. Go figure.

Oddly, there is a bit of wisdom in your remark. At its heart is the difference between British readers or presenters and American anchors. If an anchor is a celebrity, there is something remiss with the news.

Seriously? Pop-ups on literally every page including the one to get this e-mail address? Well, congratulations. You have now made the site almost unusable. And, you might want to inform your sponsor that I wouldn’t watch Nurse Jackie if they tied me down, clamped my eyelids open and played Beethoven.

Advertising is understandable, but these are just poorly thought out and offensive at best.

I’m okay with whomever Katie’s replacement is so long as they are willing to ask the tough questions like “What do you read?” to blithering idiots who never should have left their meth capital in Alaska.

British “presenters” make no secret of their leftist political leanings while American anchors at least hide behind a veneer of objectivity, hypocritical though it is.

Nope. If you can find me the tape of ALL of the interview, that would be great.

  • BOMBSHELL

    OK morons, listen up!

GBR (whom the family lovingly refers to as “Goober-Brained Retard) put our son, BOMBSHELL JR. on a bus to Thule, Greenland. He told our boy there would be a kitten waiting for him when he got to Greenland, and you know how our son is ALWAYS asking everyone he meets to buy him a kitten.

Well, the kid is sort of dimwitted just like his ol’ man, and so I’m stepping in until we get him back to provide moral support for my ol’ man, and you’d danged well better NOT mess with me! Just know that I am GBR’s ol’ lady, and give me the respect I demand.
