Ronan Farrow Advises Obama to ‘Hold the Course’ of Inaction on Ukraine Crisis

With the situation in Ukraine escalating this week as government forces battle pro-Russian separatists in the effort to regain control of key government buildings and installations, MSNBC host Ronan Farrow took aim at those who have criticized President Barack Obama‘s approach to the crisis. Farrow noted that Obama has taken a cautious approach to the crisis in Eastern Europe, and Farrow advised Obama to “hold the course.”

“It appears, yesterday, that a phone call between President Obama and President [Vladimir] Putin did little to calm the fears of European leaders,” Farrow asserted. “British Foreign Secretary William Hague said today that Russia has deliberately pushed Ukraine to the brink and increased the risk of violent confrontation.”

“This is a crisis that is spurring increasing calls for President Obama to take action,” Farrow continued. He noted that some in Congress are calling for intervention, and advocate for that the United States provide Ukraine’s interim government with lethal aid to deter further Russian aggression.

“That’s an appealing idea at face value, but history teaches us over and over again that when America rashly intervenes, as we did for instance supporting Afghanistan in Mujahideen in 1980s, we unleash a genie hard to put back in the bottle,” Farrow advised.

“So, President Obama waiting and exercising caution isn’t necessarily sitting on his hands,” he added. “It may be the caution that we need right now.”
