Should Stephen Colbert Be Calling Anderson Cooper ‘CNN’s Immortal Elf’ Right Now?

video

Last night, for the second night in a row, Stephen Colbert joked about the attacks suffered by CNN’s Anderson Cooper at the hands of a angry and pro-Mubarak crowd in Cairo. The jokes were rather mild and delivered in the comedic style of Colbert’s over-the-top character, but given that journalists in Egypt are facing grave danger of being kidnapped amid threats of beheadings, one wonders if maybe its a little too soon to make light of a pretty scary set of circumstances.

On Wednesday night Colbert made similar light of Cooper’s ordeal, as did his Comedy Central compadre Jon Stewart, who’s bit we also thought showed questionable judgment, particularly since Cooper is actually out in the field reporting on important news, creating a stark contrast between real journalists and the fake kind referenced here.

There’s no question that Colbert and Stewart are well regarded comedians who, have in many ways, redefined the way that news and information gets delivered. But ironic comedy such as this — that so heavily relies on the distance between reality and absurdity — can suddenly become completely devoid of any meaning, which ultimately makes the joke teller seem both completely detached, and sadly, unfunny.

I’ll say it again… Anderson Copper wasn’t hurt in any way. He got bitch slapped. A handsy guy at a bar get worse. If he had been hurt (like other jurnos HAVE) it would not be funny. But he wasn’t hurt and CNN and others are pimping it like he survived a rocket attack. If Colbert was mocking one of the jurnos that had been hurt, kidnapped, blindfolded, etc. It would not be funny. He was not hurt (his hair & makeup stayed perfect) so I say mind that sucker for comedy gold.

Ok Cobly, I think you guys are beginning to believe the hype, slow down, your moving to fast!!!!!

100′s of Egyptians dead + Comedy show coverage = meh

Handful of American journalists threatened + Comedy show coverage = Outrage

Well, perhaps Cooper and the rest of the “journalists” shouldn’t be out there trying to get involved in the story. It reminds me of the idiotic weatherman who decide to stand outside during a hurricane and be on live broadcasts. First of all, its just stupid to do. Secondly, they are trying to make entertainment TV. I see very little difference between reporting in a hurricane and them doing that in the streets of Cairo.

@marcus.lewis: I’m glad that journalists are making every effort to cover the story and that they aren’t easily intimidated. Otherwise, all a strongman would have to do is go boo, then disappear half their country, if they’d like.

As for the Stewart and Colbert jokes, I think they’re perfectly fair and are being practiced by all forms of media. Also, if the angle of this post is that if something happens, calling Anderson “immortal” could be looked back upon in poor taste, but couldn’t you say the same about all of the jokes made about how Mubarak plans to die on Egyptian soil?

Anderson Cooper is a tool. “It’s hard to talk when you’re teabagging.” It sucks when you’re being marginalized by a bigger group of people, when all you want is to give your opinion and some asshole tries to use their pull to shut you up. Somehow I don’t have much empathy for him.

I can appreciate the comedy of Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert but it is these types of bits that have turned Anderson into a joke and has cost him much of the respect he worked so hard to achieve. Not only was the timing in bad taste, but, in my opinion, these jokes seem to diminish the truly serious injuries suffered by other journalists.

And let’s not forget that he and other journalists are still in Egypt and not completely out of danger.

@libra blue: I think Anderson has evolved into being an icon of journalism, much the same as Dan Rather and Peter Jennings before him, except Coop doesn’t wear a trenchcoat. i don’t think the jokes do his reputation harm, instead they help show how far it goes.

Right, so when Colbert calls Sarah Palin a troll, he is a genius. When he mocks Colby’s man crush, he is going over the line.

So what is the source of Colby’s pathetic double standard? Aggrandizing his own profession? Liberal belief that hatred of conservatives is fun?

    Why is Colby a hypocrite?

  • IloiloKano

Hey, I thought it was funny. And yes, that AC was called by SC “CNN’s immortal elf” is perfectly okay.

  • Yoda002

I think it is a little over the top when Cooper is out there risking his life.

He went through a pretty serious ordeal and for you to make light of it, is not right. I didn’t see Beck, O’Reilly Rush out there.

    ” I didn’t see Beck, O’Reilly Rush out there.:

What a pathetic statement. First of all, nobody is talking about those people and the fact that you insert them into the conversation demonstrates how pathetic your obsession with them is. Second, they are pundits and pundits don’t do on-site reporting. Finally, even if your silly point was valid, it applies to all of the liberal pundits you conveniently omitted as well.

You are silly. Take off the tin foil. It is curtailing your ability to think soundly.

Is this an item from The Onion? One of the other items on this site opens with this:

“Those extra-wide screens that give you so much real estate to watch football or Anderson Cooper getting punched also have a downside.”

It was a tough scenario, but I think AC himself would have found it funny.
