Yet another week where we see illustrated the lazy funk SNL got itself into, not counting the musical act…

    -political open
    -bad recurring skit (Gilly…)
-TV show parody (celebrity ghost stories)
    -TV commercial parody
    -fake TV talk show
    Weekend Update!
    -fake TV sports show
    -fake TV cooking show
    -TV news show parody
-original skit (hey, they got one in there, too bad it was at the end and not really funny)

Remember when SNL could do satire that wasn’t a parody on a TV show, or a fake show like the Italian talk show and the cooking show and the Biker Chicks show and the Mexican talk show, etc, etc? It’s like the default skit now; “Can you imagine a talk show — but run by (stereotype)? Or a cooking show — but (something weird) happens?” It’s enough to make you yearn for the days of the Kattan/Ferrell skits that lead to “Night at the Roxbury”.

Seriously… you’re stuck in a creativity funk. When you’re writing material and it starts with “Imagine a TV show where…”, STOP. There are plenty of other things in life, in the world, to inspire yourself from than just mocking TV shows and imagining outrageous fake ones.
