Speaker Boehner Sheds Tears After Embracing Gabby Giffords

Video

Speaker John Boehner, who appeared stoic throughout much of the morning’s proceedings, had an emotional moment after embracing a departing Gabby Giffords.

As DNC chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz helped her down the aisle towards Boehner, Giffords appeared to stumble slightly. Speaker Boehner reached out to steady the Arizona congresswoman and help her up, greeting her with a kiss on the cheeck. He accepted her formal letter of resignation, then, tearfully, leaned in to offer a second kiss.

The two then held hands before their colleagues as Boehner’s face contorted with emotion. As Giffords made her way back down, the Speaker reached for a tissue to wipe away his tears.

Yeah, fine, I was sobbing. You?

The human strength and spirit of Gabby Giffords would bring anyone to tears…

    …Best Wishes for her recovery.

Nice try, but Boehner was still crying from the speech Obama gave last night…

No that can’t be the problem here.  If it had been the speech, he would have been rolling on the floor laughing or in the bathroom hurling.

This is when you are supposed to cry, Orangeman.

I guess taking a minute off out of respect for someone and not being a hack is just too hard for some.

This really was touching, and so was all of the bipartisan kind words today on the floor.

Moments like this, while tragic, give me a small amount of hope for our sorry state of politics.  Best wishes to Gabby.  I hope she is able to return someday.

Haha, you’ve got to love the Tan Man.

The entire Congress showed grace and poise today.  Kudos to them all for recognizing true heart and determination  in Gabby Giffords and overriding their usual mud slinging to come together. It was lovely to see everyone in the house acting like adults.

    You talking about lil o?

I presently respect the demeanor of the House.  It is the Senate that is led by a person of very ill repute and lack of interest in the hard work of the House.

I’ve been a critic of Speaker Boehner in the past – both for his crying and for his conduct as Speaker.

But I think this video actually helps the cause against those who dismiss his previous crying jags as phony theatrics and evidence of instability.

Who with a shred of humanity could doubt that his reaction today was totally genuine? As his defenders have previously stated he is simply a very emotional person.

Bravo for the Speaker and bravo for the courageous and arduous fight Gabby Giffords has fought and continues to fight.

Well said. When I saw him welling up I thought how will the liberal media spin this. They can’t berate and make fun of him this time. My dad was a tough SOB but he would get all chocked up easily when confronted with an emotional situation.

I was so relieved to see the humanity coming out in the comments on this subject and seeing same on the floor of the House. Imagine, adults acting like adults. Gabby Giffords is such an inspiration and I cried, too, this morning.

I don’t tend to agree with the guy very often, but I’ve always thought that he’s an emotional person, and there’s nothing wrong with that.  At least it shows he’s human.  Good for Boehner, and good for Gabby Giffords for making it this far and realizing that it’s time to move along.  I’m pretty well surprised that opportunism hasn’t been all over this since the day she announced she’d resign, though I’m sure it’s lurking somewhere.

At least this time, Boehner had an actual legitimate reason to cry this time!!

    He’s still a big baby!!

    This was very moving!

Throughout history those with less empathy to human suffering are the ones that get the greatest adulation… Hitler, Mussolini,  Idi Amin  et cetera. President Obama who was against Bill Clinton’s welfare reform, is happy to give more food stamps to people rather than help spur economic growth. “Teach my people how to fish, don’t just give them fish”. The emotionless, cold, heartless, manipulating, selfish and egotistic maniacal President Obama of course will not feel a thing for anyone but worry about his re-election.

Thanks to John Boehner who sincerely shows emotion because he genuinely is affected by human suffering, he won’t be heralded, but he’ll have peace in his heart. Unlike the President who promised to bring people together who have managed to become the most divisive President of recent time.

God bless Ms Gabby Giffords and help her recover quickly. Ms Giffords you are a fighter. Our prayers we always be with you Ms Giffords!

Man, could you give it a rest for a few minutes? John Boehner cried during a genuinely emotional moment. So, your big chance to excoriate Obama? Any opportunity, and it will be taken, it seems.

    Truly a touching moment.
But to the “liberal” filth who’s ruining this page with their programed jabs at the “Orangeman” , seriously, go f**k yourselves.

I enjoy moments of absolute unity and true emotion.

It was still an appropriate response, despite that it’s diminished by all the times he’s wept like a walrus over the most innocuous things in the past (starting at 5:50):

Even REAL conservatives don’t care much for Boehner’s policies…but we appreciate his sensitivity….especially in the Giffords matter.
I doubt there were too many dry-eyes in the room and if there were…they were Obamabots.

Do you have to try to turn one of the handful of good bipartisan moments that we’ve had in decades into a partisan slap? Speaker Boehner rose to the occasion; it’s pathetic that you couldn’t. I haven’t heard or read anyone mocking the Speaker about this. I oppose his political views and action (and I don’t believe the media is liberal, with a few exceptions.  Being to the left of Fox News doesn’t make you liberal; an Eisenhower or even a Goldwater conservative Republican would be to the left of Fox News) and I found his actions gentlemanly and moving. Heck, I liked the Speaker for the first time ever.

Gee Peggy I guess they couldn’t spin it this time. My point. And if you don’t belive the media is liberal I have some swampland to sell you. As one who has worked in the media for decades I can assure you it is overwhelmingly.
