Stephen Colbert: Michele Bachmann Got 80% Of The Iowa Straw Poll Votes She Paid For

video

As predicted by many political pundits, Rep. Michele Bachmann won the Iowa Straw Poll this weekend by a relatively wide margin. How did she pull it off? According to Stephen Colbert, the Bachmann campaign may have paid for the win by purchasing tickets to the event and enticing attendees with beef brisket, air conditioning and chairs! He supported this claim with clips of various political analysts making such a claim, before suggesting how this strategy will help her win the general election come November 2012.

Colbert continued by interpreting the weekend events in Iowa and how a certain candidate known as “XXX” was reported on by the Associated Press. Watch the clip below, courtesy of Comedy Central:

It’s “just a comedy show” though, right? What evidence does Colbert or his favorite Democrat party media have of this? Is it unusual? What about the straw poll Obama won? Any shenanigans there? I’m guessing they aren’t interested in such questions.

  • Valkyrie101

Its not shenanigans, that is the way it works. All the candidates do it. Its a charade the under-rated Iowans put on to show the nation what monkeys the candidates are.

Colbert makes no apologies for pretending to be a Republican to mock the Right.
Don’t confuse him with Stewart.  Colbert never said his show doesn’t have an agenda.

So if you want to find out how Obama won his straw poll maybe you should stick Fox on it and stop whining about a comedy show.

Or better yet. get your own comedian to do a faux Liberal show.

I think she will turn out to be the GOP’s answer to Howard Dean. She will win a few but will ultimately go down in flames and the race will be between Romney and Perry.

  • Anonymous

She handed out 6000 tics to get 4832 votes.

She’s won and ‘obviously’ deserved all the media hype that ensued :D

    Bless Colbert!

  • The Real Royal Emperor

We really shouldn’t pay this much attention to the Iowa straw poll. I’m sure it’s a fun thing to do will scarfing down fried foods, but it is by design meaningless.

  • ironwillfff1

“By a relatively large margin”? Really? She only beat Ron Paul by 200 or so votes.

  • Anonymous

Whatever. I just got news that Paul Ryan, the most hated republican in the country is “seriously” thinking about running, which excites me because I almost thought about cancelling my cable subscription before hearing this. With a panel like this, I just can’t resist the entertainment.

Colbert would appear less freaky & frightening if he “paid for” getting his pointed, distended Martian ear fixed.

  • Anonymous

Really, you had to pay a fee for the privilege of voting in a straw poll? Or was that just tickets to get in the fair which included the straw poll? Colbert called them voting tickets. Either way it’s pretty dam funny.

I just got an iPhone 4 for $ 24. 53 and my girlfriend loves her Dell laptop that we got for $ 35.46 there arriving tomorrow by UPS I will never pay such expensive retail prices in stores again. Especially when I also sold a 42 inch LED TV to my boss for $ 655 which only cost me $ 61.79 to buy. Here is the website we use to get it all from, GrabРenny.com

  • The Real Royal Emperor

That might be a wise career move since he appears to be heading for some trouble at home.

    You’re reaching Stephen…you’re reaching.

The tickets were $30 bucks a pop, proceeds going to Iowa G.O.P., not the State Fair. Michele bought 6,000 and gave them out to people she though were supporters. 80 percent of those morons “voted” for her.  The straw poll is a fraud.

  • The Real Royal Emperor

Really a shame when SPAM writers are indistinguishable in grammar, composition, spelling and syntax from T-Partee commenters. SPAM has taken a big hit.

  • The Real Royal Emperor

The event is a state Republican party fundraiser, and to vote you have to hold a US $30.00 meal ticket. The tradition is the campaigns pay for the tickets.

Not to be confused with Marcus Bachmann’s website, GrabPeenie.com

Thanks for the info. I have to wonder why national news media covers this with anything other than a passing reference.

  • Anonymous

Yeah, a political sideshow where a home-school crusader who equates, seriously, the Department of Education to Nazi concentration camps paid over $180,000 to buy votes at a straw poll only got 80% of the votes she paid for isn’t funny.

    It’s actually hilarious.

It’s interesting how worshipped Stephen is and how what ever he says instantly becomes gospel…VERY interesting.

Ron Paul sold 4000 tics to get 4671 votes. Bachman only got 80% of what she paid for in contrast to the Good Dr.’s 100% percent return from people convicted enough to put their money where their mouths are PLUS, an additional 17% profit in LIBERTY converts and RP fanatics willing to be scalped for the cause!!!

Hey, Bachman, two words … BLOW BACK!!! ( or, tongue in cheek… Corn Dog!!!)

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Sara-Helen-Wilson/1438338380 Sara Helen Wilson

    * ‘cuz… Ron Paul sold 4000 tics to get 4671 votes. That’s a 100% percent return for the Good Doctor in votes from people convicted enough to put their money where their mouths are PLUS, an additional 17% profit in LIBERTY enthusiasts!!!

You’ve been pounding and pounding since Obama got elect for a GOP candidate. Now the process started & all you can do is find a negative at every move while offering nothing substantive. What’s it like living like Michael Myers inside such an angry body ?

Colbert takes advantage of a general lack of knowledge from viewers concerning straw polls. Two types:
    (1) the people that believe the bit is accurate or logical
    (2) the people that believe the bit is funny.
    Both enjoy the humor.

    Just in:
    Michele
Bachmann gave Elvis Presley, whose songs she uses at her events, happy
birthday wishes today while she was in Spartanburg, S.C.
Unfortunately, today’s the 34th anniversary of the day he died.

“Before we get started, let’s all say ‘Happy
Birthday’ to Elvis Presley today,” Bachmann said. “You can’t do better
    than Elvis Presley.”

Herman Cain was complaining because Bachmann bought up all the golf carts.  Anyone who thinks she “won” anything is kidding themselves.

  • Anonymous

Odd how anything Rupert Murdoch, Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Roger Ailes, Sean Hannity, Grover Norquist, etc, etc do that on the Right?  VERY interesting…

Colbert bringing attention to what a joke Michele Bachmann is not new or inventive.  The fact that 20% of people whose tickets she paid for voted for someone else is just funny and sad.

  • Anonymous

You just proved my point for me.  Libs and Progs can’t tell the difference between true enlightened commentary and a silly little comedian…such a shame…such a bloody shame.  Oh well, next.

  • Anonymous

So please tell me which one of the silly comedians (Rush, Hannity and Glenn) or the enlightened (Ailes, Grover and Murdoch) sets you Conservative asshats apparent from the sheep-like masses?

  • Anonymous

Michelle Bachmann  won the Ames Straw Poll by the rules everybody else was playing by.  If you don’t like the rules, don’t play.  Mitt Romney didn’t play.  Rick Perry didn’t play.  If you can’t stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen.

  • Anonymous

Michelle Bachmann didn’t win the Ames Straw Poll “by a wide margin”.  She won over Ron Paul by less than 1% if the votes cast.  Between them, they got over half of all the votes cast, and both got over twice as many votes than the 3d place finisher, Tim Pawlenty.

  • Anonymous

You need to calm your little ass down, fool.

  • fyonalon

What’s enlightening about sitting on your high horse, pretending you have a penetrating mind?  Its so boring . . . and false.  Colbert doesn’t want to be mindlessly worshipped.  He wants recognition from his intellectual peers as many smart people do.  What is so VERY interesting about Americans worshipping successful people?  Isn’t this what Americans do better than anyone else?

  • Anonymous

So…now you’re an expert on what Stephen wants and aspires to? Ha…I don’t think so…(eyes rolling)

  • Anonymous

Typical Leftist Drull from an A$$wipe!  Nothing new here!

  • Darryl Schmitz

“By a wide margin”? A win of fewer than 1% of the votes over Ron Paul is a “wide margin”? Wow, must block the Mediaite site from now on…
