Trump Avoids Saying Directly Whether There Are Actual Comey ‘Tapes’

During a joint press conference today with the Romanian president, President Donald Trump avoided reporters’ questions on whether tapes exist of him having conversations with ex-FBI Director James Comey.

Having already accused Comey of committing perjury during his testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee, Trump was then asked by ABC News’ Jonathan Karl if he would be willing to speak under oath regarding Comey’s statements about a loyalty pledge and stopping an investigation into Michael Flynn.

After saying he’d be “100%” willing to speak under oath, Trump was then pressed on the existence of “tapes” he had referenced last month.

“I’m not hinting at anything,” Trump told Karl in response to a question about his hinting at recordings. “I’ll tell you about it over a short period of time.”

Following that, a number of other reporters shouted out, asking him if there are tapes.

“You’re going to be very disappointed when you hear the answer,” Trump said, refusing to provide a direct answer.

The president also added this observation: “I hardly know the man, I’m not going to say ‘I want you to pledge allegiance.’ Who would ask a man to pledge allegiance under oath?”
