President Joe Biden is not expected to be charged in Special Counsel Robert Hur’s investigation into his handling of classified documents, according to a report from CNN.
The special counsel will not charge anyone in connection to the year-long investigation into the handling of documents at two locations connected to Biden. However, the report will be critical of the president along with his staff for their handling of sensitive national security information.
Hur’s team is currently compiling the report which is expected to go into detail about the findings of the special counsel’s investigation. Although CNN notes the timeline could change, the report is expected to be finished by the end of the year.
The special counsel was appointed nearly a year ago after classified documents from Biden’s time as vice president to President Barack Obama were found at his former DC office as well as at his home in Wilmington, Delaware.
Supporters of former President Donald Trump have used the special counsel’s investigation to draw similarities with Jack Smith’s criminal prosecution of Trump in Florida. Over the summer, Smith brought criminal charges against the Republican frontrunner for his handling of classified material at his Mar-A-Lago estate after leaving office.
However, unlike in the Biden case, the National Archives requested documents back from Trump but failed to receive a response to their request. The FBI pursued a search warrant for his Florida country club to retrieve the documents. Meanwhile, Biden’s legal counsel notified the National Archives of the documents upon their discovery and returned them.
