Dr. Jill Biden Addresses Covid Impact in DNC Speech from Former Classroom: We’re All Asking ‘How Do I Keep My Family Safe?’

On the second night of the Democratic National Convention, Dr. Jill Biden delivered her keynote remarks about her husband, Joe Biden, and their vision for the future should he win the presidency.

Standing in a classroom, Biden spoke about the impact of Covid on families and children.

“As a mother and a grandmother, as an American, I am heartbroken by the magnitude of this loss-by the failure to protect our communities-by every precious and irreplaceable life gone. Like so many of you, I’m left asking: how do I keep my family safe?” she said.

She then spoke of her own family’s hardships, and tragic losses.

“After our son, Beau, died of cancer, I wondered if I would ever smile or feel joy again. It was summer but there was no warmth left for me,” she said. “Four days after Beau’s funeral, I watched Joe shave and put on his suit. I saw him steel himself in the mirror-take a breath-put his shoulders back-and walk out into a world empty of our son. He went back to work. That’s just who he is.”

“There are times when I couldn’t imagine how he did it — how he put one foot in front of the other and kept going. But I’ve always understood why he did it,” she continued. “He does it for you.”

She also spoke his faith in “the providence of God” and in the American people.

After her remarks, she was joined by her husband, who introduced himself by saying “I’m Jill Biden’s husband.”
