Steve Doocy Fact-Checks Trump’s Claim That Democrats Can Vote in NH Republican Primary: ‘That Is Not True’
Former President Donald Trump has been claiming that Democrats and independents are planning to “infiltrate” the Republican primary to vote for former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley. On Friday, Fox & Friends co-host Steve Doocy set the record straight.
While discussing Haley’s performance during Thursday night’s CNN town hall, Doocy brought up the claims by Trump that Haley was depending on “Democrats and liberals” to vote in the New Hampshire primary. This implies that Democrats can vote in Republican primaries, which Doocy explained was not true:
Doocy: So here’s the thing. Donald Trump said that New Hampshire law allows for Democrats to vote in the Republican primary. That is not true. You’ve got to be a registered Republican unless you’re undeclared. The last day for a Democrat to change party affiliation was back in October. October 6th. So, that is not accurate.
But the thing about New Hampshire is there are so many independents. There are so many undeclared. They, when they show up at the polling places that for on Tuesday, they’re asked, do you want a Republican ballot or a Democrat ballot, depending on your party affiliation. If you’re a Democrat, you can get the Democrat. If you’re a Republican, you get a Republican. If you’re undeclared, you can have either.
Lawrence Jones: According to the New Hampshire Secretary of State’s office, it’s been 4,000 Democratic voters who have switched party affiliation to Republican or undeclared. Nikki Haley said that a lot of people have–
Doocy: They would have had to have done that in October.
Jones: They have. And they and that’s what the Secretary of state, is saying.
CBS News had more information on those numbers:
Of the state’s more than 873,000 registered voters, just 3,542 voters changed their registration from Democrat to undeclared before the state’s Oct. 6 deadline, and just 408 Democrats changed their registration to Republican.
