WATCH: Morning Joe Airs Focus Group of Undecided Voters Wrecking Biden On the Economy and Trump for Being a ‘Bully’

MSNBC covered a new focus group study on undecided voters in a handful of swing states, and the video proved telling — at least it did to Morning Joe co-host Mika Brzezinski.

The study was conducted by the interactive video platform 2WAY and polling group Wicks Insights and hosted by Mark Halperin (a former Morning Joe regular who was fired from NBC News in 2017 following accusations of sexual harassment while he was at ABC); the subjects interviewed were from states including Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan. While the voters expressed clear dissatisfaction with how President Joe Biden was handling the economy, the same voters were also very vocal about former President Donald Trump’s leadership abilities — or really, his social media habits.

This is a collection of quotes about Biden on the economy:

Nathan: I think he’s been absolutely disastrous for the economy.

Virginia: We have areas here in Pennsylvania where it’s just at a standstill right now, like things are supposed to be being built and the interest rates are just way too high for people to, you know, invest in and start moving moving around.

Gigi: I mean, I feel like he doesn’t even take accountability for, at all, with what’s going on in the economy, and not even accountability. Like he’s in denial that it’s happening.

Omar: The point is, Biden needs to hear the people, because when he’s talking about the economy doing stellar, he’s talking about the stock market. He’s not looking at homelessness or joblessness. He not, to Katie’s point, thinking about how much it costs to go to the grocery store. He’s gaslighting literally everyone in the process.

It didn’t help Biden that MSNBC reported during this very segment that the consumer price index jumped by 3.5 percent. But even so, and as important as “pocketbook” issues are to any presidential campaign, what the same voters said about Trump was hardly an endorsement:

Virginia: I just think Donald Trump is mean. He’s a bully. And I think his policies are solid, I pretty much agree with most of them. I just don’t like him as a leader.

Shawn: I don’t think he does a lot to try to bring groups together. And, you know, from when he ran the last time our country became so divided, I don’t know if it’s anything particularly, particular about what he said or did. But our country really just, we really picked sides on this.

Omar: I feel like people forget about that, Shawn, that’s such a good point. It’s like Trump is so volatile and not only internal strife and conflict, but, you know, like, I don’t feel comfortable with him calling someone with nukes “Rocket Man.”

Katie: And so much behind social media. It’s like, yeah, just get your fingers off the phone!

Kim: It’s the situation that went on at the Capitol for me that got really out of control. It makes you wonder, if he’s back in there? What… anything can happen now.

Virginia: I feel like if Trump just shut his mouth like, and just did the policy and his work, I would I would say yes, please come back. But if he just learns to keep his mouth closed, don’t make comments about people that he might not necessarily like that much and just be a strong leader and and do his job.

Gigi: The divisiveness that he caused, is in the country, is like the big, big problem. His policies like can be, could be great, but that almost undermines that all.

Nathan: His position differs based on his audience. And I mean, you know, as a politician, that’s a great skill to have. But it just makes him so untrustworthy to anybody who’s paying attention. That just seems entirely disingenuous.

After playing the clip, Brzezinski noted: “Despite right-wing networks blatantly lying about Donald Trump and Fox News sort of avoiding any bad news about him, the truth on Trump seems to be out there with these undecided voters. It seems to be breaking through.”
