Matthew McConaughey Calls Texas Abortion Law ‘Overly Aggressive’
Matthew McConaughey commented on the restrictive Texas abortion law, calling it “overly aggressive” while speaking at The New York Times’ DealBook summit.
“The last abortion law in Texas feels overly aggressive to me. It doesn’t seem to open up any room for a sensible choice to be made at the right time,” McConaughey, who is considering a run for governor of Texas, told Andrew Ross Sorkin Tuesday. “I believe it’s six weeks.”
Later in the interview, first posted to Twitter by the Recount, McConaughey pointed to the fact that many people are unaware that they are even pregnant by that point in their term.
According to Dr. Sarah Horvath, a family planning fellow at the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, it’s hard for those not actively trying to get pregnant, such as victims of rape, to realize they are carrying at six weeks.
The actor went on to say that while he has his own thoughts on abortions and abortion rights, he was not going to share them explicitly, adding that he believes in “more personal responsibility to make the right choices.”
“We gotta take context with each situation and each person’s situation — each women’s situation. You know, you hear about someone who gets raped,” he added, hesitating before saying the word “raped.”
“That’s not a women’s choice. That’s not a place to say, ‘Oh, you need to bring that child into this world,’ I don’t believe,” he continued. “Abortion is one of those places where we’re asked as humans to play God, and that’s not necessarily our responsibility and our place.”
