Piers Morgan and others raised concern on Tuesday after an Irish comedy writer was arrested by British authorities over a number of X posts.
“When it comes to free speech, Britain’s turning into North Korea,” Morgan wrote, calling the arrest of Graham Linehan “absolutely ridiculous.”
In a Substack post, Linehan broke down his arrest, which he said occurred at Heathrow Airport after he’d flown back from the United States. Linehan said five armed men took him into custody and questioned him about his social media posts.
The comedy writer, who co-created the popular Father Ted series, said he was eventually taken to the hospital after his pressure was taken.
“When I first saw the cops, I actually laughed. I couldn’t help myself. ‘Don’t tell me! You’ve been sent by trans activists.’ The officers gave no reaction and this was the theme throughout most of the day,” Linehan wrote.
According to the writer, part of his bail conditions is that he not go on Twitter. He said the arrest stemmed from three X posts about transgender-related issues. Linehan said the posts from April had to do with a “trans-identified male” going into a “female-only space.”
“If a trans-identified male is in a female-only space, he is committing a violent, abusive act. Make a scene, call the cops and if all else fails, punch him in the balls,” Linehan wrote in one post.
Metropolitan Police did not identify Linehan by name, but said in a statement that Linehan was taken into custody “on suspicion of inciting violence.”
The comedy writer has said his views on transgender issues have cost him work and ultimately led to the end of his marriage.
Writer J.K. Rowling also took issue with Linehan’s arrest, writing on X, “What the f*ck has the UK become? This is totalitarianism. Utterly deplorable.”
Linehan is set to appear in court soon after he pleaded not guilty to harassing Sophia Brooks, a transgender activist, on social media.
