Resurfaced Video Shows Jada Smith Roasting Will Smith For Spending Three Years Planning Her 40th Birthday: ‘Ridiculous Display’
A resurfaced episode from Jada Pinkett Smith’s podcast Red Table Talk reveals the lengths her husband Will Smith goes for her approval. The video was unearthed weeks after Smith’s explosive meltdown at the Oscars where he slapped comedian Chris Rock for making a joke about his wife.
In the episode from October 2018, Jada recalls a turning point in the couple’s marriage.
“I think the turning point in our relationship for me, happened when I turned 40. That’s when I had a mid-life crisis,” she said.
“Yeah, your 40th birthday was my low point,” Smith agreed.
The actor then described the elaborate party he had planned for his wife. “The day after her 37th birthday, I hired a team to orchestrate her 40th birthday,” Smith said.
“I hired a documentary team, I traced mommy’s family roots,” he told daughter Willow Smith who sat beside him during the episode. “Her 40th birthday was going to be my thing!”
“It was going to be a splash,” Jada remarked glumly.
“It definitely was a splash,” agreed Willow.
Smith continued, “Mary J. Blige preformed, I debuted the film, all of that. It was going to be the thing that would lift her out of this mid-life crisis. It was going to be my deepest most beautiful proclamation of love.”
“I had Mary J. Blige preforming and the whole time I was like the little boy who wants mommy to say everything was wonderful,” Smith said.
Smith then recounted his reaction when his wife revealed the party he had spent three years planning for her was a bust.
“She told me that the party was the most ridiculous display of my ego,” Smith said. “Crushed, right? And to this day I know I was crushed because it was true. It wasn’t a party for her.”
Jada began shaking her head in agreement. Smith then recalled “snapping” in front of his daughter for the first time as the incident played out.
“When she called me on that — that’s when I snapped,” Smith said while turning to Willow. “I’m sorry — that was the only time you’d ever heard me snap.”
The two shared a hug while wife Jada laughed saying “Thank God!”
Smith continued, “I snapped in front of Willow — was the only time in her childhood that she ever saw me snap and I saw her look and Willow starts crying and I was like ‘baby I’m sorry, sorry’ and she was like ‘just figure it out, you guys just please figure it out, figure it out.'”
Jada jumped in to say “that was a display — that moment of like me having the courage to just say no. But now I had to have the courage to unravel it. And just realizing the next 40, I gotta do it my way.”
