‘Islamophobia’: Hasan Piker Accuses Cuomo of Using 9/11 To Slam Mamdani

Twitch star Hasan Piker accused former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) of “leaning on Islamophobia” by calling attention to NYC mayoral frontrunner Zohran Mamdani’s (D) Muslim faith and his connection to Piker, who previously said America “deserved” the 9/11 attacks.
Here is what Piker had to say on his livestream on Tuesday afternoon:
“These guys are incredibly desperate, and they’ll get even more racist as the election nears. I suspect that they’ll do a big push around 9/11 as well to try to, like, associate Zohran Mamdani with 9/11 ,because they’re just leaning on Islamophobia. That’s it. Zohran is Muslim. They’re trying to f*cking be like, they’re they’re trying to be like: ‘Yeah, Muslim guy kind of did 9/11. His people did 9/11. Remember 9/11? his people did it. Do you want an insider to do 9/11 again?’ Like that type of shit. That’s basically what they’re doing. They’re just, like, hitting the racism line.”
His comments came a few hours after large photos of Mamdani hanging out with Piker were showcased at a Cuomo press event.
Piker added the focus on Mamdani’s Muslim faith is “pretty funny,” considering the current rise in “fascist Christian nationalism” in the U.S. On Twitch, his main platform, Piker has 2.9 million followers, to go along with another 1.7 million subscribers on YouTube.
Piker made the 9/11 comments, which were highlighted at Tuesday’s Cuomo press conference, back in August 2019. During a livestream Twitch broadcast, Piker said “America deserved 9/11, dude. F*ck it, I’m saying it.” During the same broadcast, Piker attacked Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) — who lost an eye in combat.
“What the f*ck is wrong with this dude?” Piker said. “Didn’t he go to war and like literally lose his eye because some mujahideen — a brave f*cking soldier — f*cked his eye hole with their d*ck?”
Days after making the remarks, Piker walked them back.
“I know that I was inappropriate,” Piker told The Young Turks’ Cenk Uygur.
Mamdani currently holds a giant lead over the field in the NYC mayor race. The New York Times on Tuesday reported the 33-year-old Democratic Socialist is polling at 46%, far ahead of Cuomo at 24%; Current NYC Mayor Eric Adams (D) is in fourth place with 9% support, NYT found, and trails Republican Curtis Sliwa who polled at 15%.
From a media standpoint, it has been a busy few days for Mamdani. He told Al Sharpton on MSNBC on Sunday that his views on the phrase “globalize the intifada” have changed recently, one day after he hosted a town hall in Brooklyn alongside fellow socialist Bernie Sanders. During the event, the Vermont senator said he and Mamdani would “not allow” Tesla CEO Elon Musk to become the world’s first trillionaire, if they have anything to do with it.
Mamdani was also pressed on his plan to open five government-run grocery stores by CNN on Friday night.
