Liberal pundit Wajahat Ali faced quick backlash on social media after he accused Erika Kirk of “using” her husband Charlie Kirk’s death to “promote” his “vehicle of hate.” The post came just days after the conservative influencer was shot and killed.
“Erika Kirk is using her husband’s death to promote Kirk’s vehicle of hate, Turning Points USA,” Ali, a podcaster and former New York Times contributing op-ed writer, posted to X on Friday. “Fascinating to watch this right now.”
Ali was referring to Mrs. Kirk appearing in front of reporters next to her husband’s podcasting chair in Phoenix, Arizona. In her emotional address, she thanked President Donald Trump and described her husband as a dedicated father. They share two young children.
“I want to thank President Trump and his incredible family,” she said through tears. “Mr. President, my husband loved you. And he knew that you loved him, too. He did. Your friendship was amazing. You supported him so well.”
Critics jumped on Ali for his cold take on the emotional address that came just two days after Mrs. Kirk lost her husband.
“A widow for TWO DAYS and this. Monstrous,” Mary Katharine Ham wrote on X.
“The beauty of free speech is that it allows us to see the soulless,” musician John Ondrasik wrote.
Charlie Kirk was shot and killed on Wednesday during an event at Utah Valley University. The suspected shooter, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, is currently in custody.
