Al Jazeera condemned Israel after the network’s journalist Samer Abudaga was reportedly killed from an Israeli drone attack in southern Gaza.
Abudaga, a cameraman, was killed after a drone strike hit the town of Khan Younis while fellow war correspondent Wael Dahdouh was wounded in the same attack on Friday, according to Al Jazeera.
The outlet claims medical teams were unable to reach Abudaga’s body and others injured in the strike because of the continued Israeli bombardment. Meanwhile, Dahdouh, who received shrapnel to his upper arm, was treated at a nearby hospital for minor injuries.
Both journalists were reporting on the Israeli-Hamas war at the Farhana school when the strike occurred. Earlier in the day, witnesses reported heavy shelling around the building.
Al Jazeera issued a statement condemning Israel and accused its military of “systematically targeting and killing” their journalists:
Al Jazeera Media Network condemns in the strongest terms the Israeli drone attack on a Gaza school that resulted in the killing of cameraman Samer Abudaqa.
The Network holds Israel accountable for systematically targeting and killing Al Jazeera journalists and their families. In today’s bombing in Khan Younis, Israeli drones fired missiles at a school where civilians sought refuge, resulting in indiscriminate casualties. Following Samer’s injury, he was left to bleed to death for over 5 hours, as Israeli forces prevented ambulances and rescue workers from reaching him, denying the much-needed emergency treatment.
The network called on the International Criminal Court to take “immediate action” against the Israeli government and military by holding them accountable for “crimes against humanity.”
Since the outbreak of the war, the number of journalists and media workers killed in the Gaza region has reached over 90, according to Al Jazeera. A report by the International Federation of Journalists published last week indicated that 72% of journalists who died on the job in 2023 were killed during the war.
