Former President Joe Biden thanked followers for the “love and support” sent his way after his office announced Sunday that he’d been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that had already metastasized to the bone.

From his home in Wilmington, Delaware, the 82-year-old posted a picture of himself with his wife, Jill Biden on Monday morning and wrote: “Cancer touches us all. Like so many of you, Jill and I have learned that we are strongest in the broken places.”

The diagnosis followed a recent evaluation after Biden reported worsening urinary symptoms.

“Last week, President Joe Biden was seen for a new finding of a prostate nodule,” his office said in a statement. “On Friday he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, characterized by a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5) with metastasis to the bone.”

That Gleason score, which is at the high end of the scale, indicates a fast-growing cancer, but the statement notes that it “appears to be hormone-sensitive” and that the family were examining “management” treatments.
